RR Keeper League Yr2

The deadline for the 2008 managers to pick their keepers was yesterday.  Out of the 16 teams last season, 15 of the managers have signed on.  This is a great percentage foreturnees to a non face to face keeper league.  I have listed the returnees and their keepers below.  Please check to make sure that everything is correct.  Reaf mentioned something regarding the scoring categories for last season and I thought this would be a good time to review all of the settings.  They are listed below after the keepers.

I would like to go from 16 to 20 teams next season.  This increase is to give some other RR's a chance to participate in the league.  I know this will waterdown the player pool, but it will only make us work harder before the draft and during the season to field competitive teams.  Other than the draft date and time, I am open for any suggestions on the settings for 2009.  This is your league so share your thoughts and lets make it work for everyone.

ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE LEAGUE NEXT SEASON SHOULD EMAIL ME.  I WILL PREPARE A LIST FOR THE REVIEW OF THE PRESENT MANAGERS.

I think we should add one or two DL spots to the roster

Considering how very deep this league is, one or two injuries could leave you with having to start a part-time utility player.

Seconded

No DL spots are annoying

One Question....

if this is a keeper league then how will you just add 4 teams. The new teams would be behind the 8 ball already with all those keepers on teams already.

i would recommend dumping CG as a category

and combining BB and AVG into OBP to balance the pitching/hitting stats

No I'm serious

Sabathia and Halladay had 10 and 9 CG’s respectively. The 3rd place guy had 5. The fact that CG’s counted as a scoring category was huge. I won it like 90% of the matchups. Obviously they were really good in other categories as well, but that was such an advantage to have 1 scoring category basically in the bag.

by raefzilla on Dec 16, 2008 8:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hi all,

I would like to see a DL slot or two added. I would also be happy with a roster reduction. Perhaps we could get rid of two bench slots when we move from 16 to 20 teams? Use the players or loose them!

I like having seven batting and seven pitching statistics. If we change any categories I hope we keep batting and pitching evenly balanced.

I will win next year. No other result is possible.

I'm happy to have teams added

But I don’t think they can be added in a way that is fair and equal. The best players are already taken. New teams would be at a major disadvantage.

we just hope to compete in the following years, or get lucky with our draft and pull multiple all-stars in rounds 8-10.

As for evening out the keepers with adding new teams…The way my fantasy football league does it, is if you keep your 1st round pick from your ’07 draft for the ’08 season, you lose your first round pick in the ’08 draft. If you keep your 5th round pick, you lose the 5th round pick, so on & so forth.

Probably wouldn’t work for a league that keeps 6 players, but it’s what we do in FB…

by GoBabies!! on Dec 16, 2008 7:04 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i didn't really read

But I think we need to get rid of holds, complete games, BB’s and TB’s. This just waters down the stats. I think those stats are useful, but in fantasy it makes the others worth less. Who’s with me?

In the Royals game of life, Neifi Perez is the rake.

by Matty486 on Dec 16, 2008 8:58 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I like Holds and BB's

BB’s and Avg can be folded into one OBP stat, but if we don’t want to do that, then I’d keep BB’s. And I like having Holds because then you don’t just limit your pitching staff to starters and closers. It makes managers have to know something about setup men too.

I want to join.

Obviously, whoever joined would have to build slowly, but I think it is possible. Just let all four expansion teams (five?) have six picks to essentially form their own set of keepers, and then conduct the draft afterwards, with the expansion teams picking at the beginning of each round.

So, basically, here is how it would work out:

EXPANSION DRAFT

1) Team A
2) Team B
3) Team C
4) Team D
5) Team E
6) Team E
…so on…

And then, when the Draft with everyone starts, just reverse the order. So it would go:

REGULAR DRAFT

1) Team E
2) Team D
3) Team C
4) Team B
5) Team A
6) Existing Team
…so on…

It still wouldn’t even the playing field, but would at least give the expansion teams a shot if they draft well enough and make enough trades/waiver wire pickups.

But yeah, I definitely want to join, just don’t know your email, grudz.

Sorry guys....

For the new managers… email is in profile now…. So, email me…

So far … on settings…

We want to lose a two of the bench spots. GS will be replaced by what OBP? And, add two DL spots… Am I right?

by grudz96 on Dec 16, 2008 11:51 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also, about the draft...

How about if the new six managers get the first six picks and the rest of the draft would follow in order of your finish in 2008. That would make it about as fair and as realistic as we can be.

by grudz96 on Dec 16, 2008 11:56 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well

Assuming this is an online draft, there probably isn’t going to be a site that would have the capabilities to set up a draft that would allow only 4 teams in a 20 team league draft the first 6 rounds, so I think that is out (its a good idea, but hard to pull off w/o a face to face draft)…

You could simply abandon the ‘snake’ format, and allow the 4 new teams (and the take over team) to draft the first 5 picks every round. Would it help that much to have the 1st, 21st & 41st picks as opposed to the 1st, 39th & 40th though?…

Maybe, we hold a "true’ expansion draft, using the players that were declared as keepers? i.e.the 90 players that have been declared keepers are tossed back into the ‘expansion draft’ for the 5 new teams to choose from. We’d have to to this pretty much right before the real draft starts, because everybody will have to be online for it. As soon as 1 player is selected from a particular teams lot of keepers, the owner of the player that was drafted can then protect 2 players, and no team can lose more than 2 of their declared keepers…

SOOOOOoooooo, using Royals Reviews team as an example…
1) Lance Berkman
2) Josh Beckett
3) John Lackey
4) Jeremy Bonderman
5) Hanley Ramirez
6) Derek Lee

If the 1st pick in the expansion draft is Lance Berkman, he can then choose to protect 2 players. Say he protects Beckett & Lackey. Then a later expansion draft pick is Bonderman, so RR can’t lose any more players, and he winds up with 4 keepers…

That would be a ‘true’ expansion draft at least. Maybe you can even have it so the existing owners can protect one player BEFORE the expansion draft, so, RR could protect Berkman before the draft, leaving 5 players exposed…

by GoBabies!! on Dec 17, 2008 11:37 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I said 'we'

I don’t mean to be assumptive that I am getting a team, just hopeful…

by GoBabies!! on Dec 17, 2008 11:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My visceral response is that this “true expansion draft” allows new owners to poach the very best player from each current owner. If we want to help the expansion teams, I’d rather just decrease the number of keepers and improve the overall draft pool. And I like the idea of giving expansion teams the first four picks in each round (a non-snake draft format).

The immoderate moderator

by NYRoyal on Dec 18, 2008 1:01 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If this is on Yahoo

There might be a way for the commish to make a partial roster for the expansion draft (assuming that is conducted ahead of time), and then we could all draft.

Or, the draft could just be on this site and the commish can fill in the teams.

Anyways, i don’t think it is necessary to poach the keeper talent on teams already, I would be fine with an expansion draft of the unkept players. And the nonsnake draft with new owners getting first picks would be nice. But I say no to poaching existing talent. And Dayton Moore willing, I will hopefully be playing in this league as an expansion owner.

by AxDxMx on Dec 18, 2008 1:06 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That was why
My visceral response is that this "true expansion draft" allows new owners to poach the very best player from each current owner.

I added the piece at the bottom, about the current owners protecting one player from their pool. This could easily be changed to 2, which would still leave 60 players available.

I’d rather just decrease the number of keepers and improve the overall draft pool.

Right, but that wouldn’t specifically help the new owners. The players released back into the draft pool would also be available for existing teams to draft.

So, lets combine the 2 options, and the existing owners protect one, two or three existing keepers, the new owners draft from those not protected. Set a number of rounds, two, three or four I’d presume, and any player that wasn’t protected by the original keeper that wasn’t drafted is then kept with the initial team

by GoBabies!! on Dec 18, 2008 10:29 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think the current owners are going to be in favor of giving up any of their keepers

We originally drafted based on keeping six players. We made our moves during the season based on keeping six players. I don’t think they (or we) are going to like having to change that now. Your proposal might be fair, but personally I’m voting thumbs down.

The immoderate moderator

by NYRoyal on Dec 18, 2008 12:11 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I get that no owners ‘want’ to give up any of their players. Nobody in a real expansion draft ‘wants’ to lose their players either, but they agree to expand for the betterment of the league as a whole. I’m just sayin…

And it was your suggestion to ‘decrease the number of keepers’ in the first place. But as I pointed out already, just tossing those excess players back in the draft gives existing teams the same opportunity to draft them as any ‘expansion teams’

by GoBabies!! on Dec 18, 2008 1:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That’s certainly one way to go. I just don’t think most owners want to go that way. And, quite frankly, I don’t see how adding teams makes the league better. I’m willing to do it, but only under certain circumstances. But I just get one vote.

And it was your suggestion to ‘decrease the number of keepers’ in the first place. But as I pointed out already, just tossing those excess players back in the draft gives existing teams the same opportunity to draft them as any ‘expansion teams’

I’ve decided to come out against welfare for expansion teams. Expansion teams are going to be at a massive disadvantage. People either want to come in or they don’t.

I do want to put in a vote for not making this too complicated

If we’re having expansion teams, I know we want to give them some kind of shot to put together a decent lineup, but I don’t think we should make it too complicated. I mean it’s Grudz’s call if he wants to do a lot of work here, but if I were the commish, I don’t know that I’d want to do all the work that would be necessary to make the expansion draft as fair to the expansion teams as possible. I’m all for doing something reasonable and something which isn’t too much work.

The immoderate moderator

by NYRoyal on Dec 18, 2008 1:23 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think the suggestion of letting them have the first picks of each round is best, and easiest to do

Basically, during the first 6 rounds, existing teams pick their keepers, while the expansion teams get to select from the remaining players.

Each expansion team will end up with 6 of the 36 best players available on the board that weren’t keepers. That may not sound that great, but there’s bound to be a bunch of talent in those 36. I know that it was difficult to pair down my keepers to just 6 — I would have kept 10 or more if I could, and after Braun, there wasn’t a huge difference in talent between my #2 guys and my #10 (which was what made the decision difficult.)

Considering that the expansion teams get to continue to pick first for each of the remaining rounds, I think these teams will still be competitive once the season begins.

This space intentionally left blank.

by marbotty on Dec 18, 2008 1:52 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would vote for not too complicated as well

And Marbotty’s idea sounds easiest, but may be a bit complicated as new owners try to sift through who is actually available to draft. Guess they had better do their pre-draft research.

by AxDxMx on Dec 18, 2008 9:55 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Okay... Comm. decision here!

We will have a non snake draft with the four expansion and one orphan managers (order chosen by blind draw by the Comm.) will get the first five picks in every round and the remaining draft slots will be filled by order of the team finish of the 2008 season.

by grudz96 on Dec 18, 2008 3:06 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Take me

off the list then. The old owners get their keepers and still get to pick players in the first 6 rounds??? The new teams should be able to draft the first 6 rounds before the old owners are able to select. If this is not the case then i am definitely not interested in the league.

by powder blues on Dec 18, 2008 4:33 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

For 2009…is this what you want?

Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, DL,DL

Stat Categories: R, HR, RBI, SB, BB, OBP, AVG, W, CG, SV, K, HLD, ERA, WHIP

There would be a 19 player draft for the established teams and a 25 player draft for the new teams. I would like to keep the scoring cat’s. even at 7 hitting and pitching if we could.

by grudz96 on Dec 18, 2008 3:15 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Stat categories

As others have mentioned, I really think we should do away with Complete Games. Their infrequency makes them a poor choice for a weekly head-to-head league. But I think there should be the same number of hitting and pitching stats. So do away with OBP and just make it six hitting and six pitching.

Retarded, or not, we couldn't please everyone...

As Commish… I have to go with the managers who have been here from the beginning. If you join a Keeper league after it has started then you can’t expect any favors. It is definitely “the buyer beware” in our upcoming draft. I am sorry that we lost you, but we have three more RR’s that I have added to the listbringing the total to 7 who want into the league. Fingers, you need to email me if you want in the draft. Go Royals….

Anxious little fellow aren't you....

If there are only five new managers then I will scramble the names and draw for the first five slots followed by last years teams in order of finish. I have had seven responses from interested parties but have not heard back from one of them and one dropped out. If we have more than five interested people then I will email last year’s managers and let them decide who gets in or not.

It will be after the holidays before I post the draft order on RR. Congrats on making into the title game of the football league. Good luck in the championships.

Thanks

NY had a monster week, and I don’t think that Forte/Graham is going to get me the requisite 38+ points to take the lead, but putting up 200 or so in the championship game and getting beat is jus the way it goes.

It also would be par for the course, the way my $$ leagues went this year…4th in points scored in both leagues, 2nd in points allowed in both leagues, 4-10 in one, and 8-6, bumped in 1st round of playoffs in the other.

If Forte

was healthy I’d feel really good, because I think he is in line to have a big game vs GB. What I expect to have happen though, is he gets his 70-100 yards and maybe a TD in the 1st half, then they’ll rest him & his toe the majority or all of the 2nd half when they are up by a comfortable margin.

I almost hope at this point that they rule him out, since I picked up Peterson & Jones this morning. I’d feel better playing Peterson if Forte was out than playing Forte since he is banged up & they are looking at possibly resting him for the playoffs…
