Dollars per marginal win, 2008
More great work from Sky Kalkman at Beyond the Box Score. On his accounting the Royals had the fifth most efficient payroll in baseball this past season.
Now would be a good time to remember not only the Meche and Soria deals, but also who signed DDJ's club-friendly contract, Grudz, and drafted Alex Gordon and Mike Aviles...

remember when we all assumed that the later years of the Meche deal were actually going to be bargains because pitching was going to get more and more expensive?
yea… about that
I guess either I don’t get your point or I have to respectfully disagree. Meche has given a great return on the first two years. Marcels projects him to be a 3 WAR pitcher this next season (conservative). This year, market value for a 3 WAR player over three years (assuming the usual rate of inflation and a 0.5 WAR rate of attrition) is 3/$40.7M. Meche is owed $35M over the next three according to cots.

A one year dip in the market
Pitching got more expensive in 2007. Elite pitching is still quite expensive, but the market is taking a dip. Expect it to rebound in 2009 and beyond.
But Meche’s contract has been a bargain so far, even without huge salary inflation.

I like Alex and think he is gonna be good
but considering some other players KC could’ve had I don’t wanna give Allard that much credit. I’ll give him the credit for not totally bombing it but thats about it.
It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.
Kind of the same credit I'll give GMDM for the Hoch pick

DM didn't make the Hoch pick
supposedly…
Don't Stop Believing!
Yeah
not saying he was a genius — getting good value out of early draft picks isn’t that amazing. Just that some of the players who gave the greatest return on investment this year — Aviles, DDJ, Alex, Grudz — where Baird acquisitions. I’m sure Neal Huntington and Andrew Friedman owe their predecessors some thanks, too.

To be fair, this linear analysis favors teams who don't spend much money.
It doesn’t necessarily rate GM performance well.

I figured I allow us all to bask
so I didn’t quote that part of your piece.
I also refrained from speculating on the millions in surplus Farns and HoRam are going to generate in 2009.

To fly the “2009 Most Efficient Team – AL Central Division” flag at Kauffman Stadium.

It will be right next to the "Al Central 3rd place 3rd Order Wins 2009" flag
and right over the plaque commemorating Zack Greinke’s graduation from the injury nexus.

There's a problem here. The payroll and Baird
Sky used the official opening day payroll, which makes sense. You have to use the same, available-for-all teams baseline payroll comparison. The problem is that the opening day payroll including all guaranteed major league contracts was actually about $67M. So this alters the analysis of payroll efficiency and the praise of Baird. While Baird did a great job with the DDJ contract which helped payroll efficiency, he also did a shitty job with the Berroa contract, which added $5.25M to the payroll, but was not counted in the “official” opening day payroll of $58M because he was not on the 25-man roster. Baird gaveth and Baird tooketh away. And he tooketh away more than he gaveth.

Yeah, finding accurate payroll figures is tough.
Anyone know any others sources?

No
I crunch all of the Royals major league contract figures and fans at some other sites do so for other teams, but I don’t know of anything that is comprehensive and reliable. For some reason, the “official” payroll numbers — including Cots totals — include only the opening day 25-man roster (and guys on the DL) and not other players with guaranteed contracts who are in the minors.

an interesting question
at a certain point, does payroll even matter? why not just calculate off total operating expenses? A team that has good/expensive advanced scouting might have an advantage, etc.
why not just calculate off total operating expenses?
That’s a good point, but a teams total operating expenses are not public information. It can only be estimated, and I think the estimates are unreliable. The only reliable information we have is payroll.
