Around SBN: Holy War Week Brings out the Worst in Fans

I guess we won't be fleecing the Sox for this guy either. I don't know anything about the prospects other than what's listed, but it doesn't look like they gave up much for a high-quality starter. Also, supposedly the Braves are looking to add another starter. This trade, however seems to make it less likely that they'll trade for Grienke.

Kenny Williams is destroying the Chicago White Sox

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

He's probably counting

On President and noted Sox fan Barack Obama bailing him out with a handout.

Pretty good deal for Atlanta

They get a 4.00 ERA 200 IP kinda guy and the only really good prospect they gave up was Flowers, who probably won’t stay behind the plate. Lillibridge looks like he’ll probably be a bit player, and the two other guys are a long way from the big leagues.

Guess the Sox are going cheap. Dye is also on the trading block. Should improve our chances in the Central. But Rob Neyer says .500 is a fantasy!!!!

and ERA is really unfair to Vazquez

he’s been in the top 7in tRA in the AL (I think) for the past three years. The Cell really did him no favors. He out tRAed both Meche and Greinke this year. Wouldn’t be a total shock if he was one of the top 3 pitcher inthe NL next year.

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

He has been traded

Quite a bit for a pitcher who’s been pretty consistently good, wouldn’t you say?

the Yanks were idiots to give up on him so quick

I think he forced the D-backs hand, somehow. I don’t remember the details. Not sure what you’re implying… I should say that it’s true that his actual ERA has never quite matched his great peripherals, but the Cell is a bad park for a flyball guy. I guess I just like him.

Not implying anything

There are some guys that bounce around despite being pretty good and likeable. Reggie Sanders comes to mind.

Jon Heyman at SI has a different version of the trade than ESPN

Tooly McToolface says that the Sox are getting Flowers, Santos Rodriguez, Jon Gilmore, and Lillibridge. No Reyes involved in the deal. I am actually inclined to believe Tooly on this one.

Good trade for Atlanta, I think, for a lot of the same reasons Retro pointed out. Vazquez should pitch quite well for them. Logan will at least not suck if he can figure out how to avoid giving up a home run every six innings. And the only really major piece they had to give up was Flowers.

One note to add—I will totally cop to being one of the people who thought, last offseason, that we should consider trading for Lillibridge. I am very glad we didn’t, his stock plummeted this year.

I personally don't know anything much about the prospects

But here is what I have for Vazquez’s ERA-RAR and FIP-RAR the last three years

ERA-RAR:

2006: 27.93 (2.7 Wins Above Replacement)
2007: 55.90 (5.3 WAR)
2008: 27.30 (2.6 WAR)

FIP-RAR:

2006: 50.00 (4.8 WAR)
2007: 54.46 (5.2 WAR)
2008: 48.83 (4.7 WAR)

That’s pretty badass. Whie FIP may be too kind to Vazquez, keep in mind how horrible the Sox outfield defense has been the last couple of years.

But even if you think that 2.6 WAR is his “true talent,” in his market place, that’s worth around $13M, and he’s getting paid 11.5M. And that’s taking ths worst performance of the above listed as his true talent. Marcels (always more conservative, especially regarding playing time)

But

If Atlanta doesn’t win the pennant, it was a complete waste of money!

Oops, forgot to delete the line about Marcels

it’s a bit better re: ERA, worse re: FIP, but still good for the money.
