Dayton's Chat Transcript is Up
goroyals21: I've heard numerous rumors about Mark Teahen getting traded. Are any of those rumors true?
Moore: Obviously, I was very disturbed about some of the rumors that have been in print concerning Mark Teahen being traded. It is not my style to comment on rumors concerning our players, but I would say that Mark Teahen, in my mind, is more important to our team today then he was in all of 2008 -- and he was very important to our team in '08.

Yikes, I'm a Mark Teahen fan
but I’m not sure how a guy somewhere beteween 0 and .6 wins above replacement level is “very important” to the team. Well, unless he’s compared to other “important” players li9ke Ross Gload, Jose Guillen, Tony Pena, Jr. and Joey Gathrihgt, all of whom were clearly worse than that. Seems like all of those guys have something in common… what is it…

those figure are for Teahen in 2008
in 2006 and 2007 he was considerably better than that — above average, in fact.

If Moore is still shopping Teabag around...
…then it wouldn’t be very smart for him to publicly talk down Teahen’s value, even in the context of an online chat. It is probably just posturing.

Look...
ever since Moore took over as GM, I can’t really remember more than one or two interviews, chats, etc. where the guy has said ANYTHING of real substance, not to mention anything that could be construed as even somewhat controversial or provocative. That chat transcript was just Exhibit No. 637 for Dayton’s pure and utter vanilla-ness when it comes to the media.
I think it might benefit him to actually show SOME sort of personality to the fans (i.e. prove that he’s not actually a super-cutting-edge robot manufactured by the Japanese). But, generally I would agree that saying anything specifically negative about a player is rarely going to do more harm than good.

Reading that transcript = 3 minutes of my life that I'll never get back
There were a lot of non-answers in there, and only a few truly useful bits of information (like the plan for Moose to spend a full year in high A ball, but I think most people could have predicted that). Most of Moore’s answers were total boilerplate—which is fine, I understand why he’s doing that. But I wouldn’t put any stock into anything he said in that chat.

+1
I too was disappointed. For a long interview with numerous questions, little was revealed. – TL
[In 2008] Kila Ka’aihue had the best on-base percentage of any hitter in the minor leagues. - Joe Posnanski, 11/9/2008 ... Ergo, let's give him a shot at first base in KC in 2009.

Moore is an intelligent GM
There’s no benefit to the Royals of him being open and forthcoming. A good GM keeps his cards close to the vest and says positive things about his players. If he’s shopping some player or doesn’t like some player, he needs to keep that to himself. Moore almost never makes a mistake in a public statement. He’s not even a part-time loose cannon like Kenny Williams or J.P. Ricciardi.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Like I said, I get why Moore is doing it
I’m just saying that because of it, trying to read anything from the chat is probably pointless.

Agreed
His public statements are pretty useless as far as getting real, meaningful information. One possible exception is that if he’s asked about possibly trading a player and he doesn’t very clearly and emphatically deny it, then such a trade is possible.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Yes and No.
You can be expansive about things that don’t involve particular players—-directions, organizational values, coaching, etc. I mean, he could’ve been more expansive about the Kauffman Stadium improvements. – TL

As Teahen trade rumors.

absolute lies are pretty disturbing
and doesn’t his need an “absolute lies” tag?

Here's a tidbit that may actually be informative
royalsn09: Would Carlos Rosa be a better asset for the ’09 Royals as a starter or reliever?
Moore: Carlos Rosa has a power arm with a developing slider and a solid changeup, and we feel that he could be a viable option to compete for a bullpen spot in the spring.

Here is what I found most intresting....
moore09: How do you plan to unclog the logjam of players at first base/DH?
Moore: Those decisions tend to work themselves out. There is obvious competition there, and certainly other teams in baseball recognize our depth in that position. Some of those players at those positions have [Minor League] options as well.
I would read this to mean that he has possibly already spoken to other teams or have other options for this delima, seeing the “certainly other teams in baseball recognize our depth @ 1b”… the only question is who goes where for what??

Only my off-season pet-project, ...
…Kila has minor league options. Ergo, that situation has worked itself out. – TL

This thread is reckless and inappropriate
Butler is the only major league roster player with options, ergo Butler starts the season in AAA?
or mashing on someone else’s MLB roster

The 1B/DH logjam includes Butler, Jacobs, Shealy, Gload and Ka’aihue. Both Butler and Ka’aihue have options remaining. I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that Moore plans to start Butler in Omaha next year.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Well, if you really think that Dayton...
is serious about Teahen’s value to the team, and that he therefore will not be moved, then Gload HAS to be gone. Teahen does everything that Gload does (and does it better). And the reference to “players with options” means that Kila will start at Omaha.
My guess would be that Butler, Jacobs, and Shealy start the year in a 1B/DH rotation (with Teahen thrown in at 1B occasionally, and maybe Guillen at DH once in a while). After the trading deadline, I would assume that either Shealy or Jacobs (maybe both) are gone, and Kila is called back up provided he establishes at Omaha in the first half that last year was not a fluke.

I sure hope so. It definitely makes sense, but Moore has overvalued Gload in the past. We’ll see.
