Royals Confidence Index - December

It is time to take the fanbase’s temperature again. The last Royals Confidence Index (RCI) in September was a season low 4.64. Below is a visual representation of the confidence fans had in the Royals over the course of the season.

That’s a fairly smooth ski slope. If I had done this at the end of September, there might have been a little ski jump uptick at the end, but that is neither here nor there. Now we must see how we fans feel about the 2009 Royals. Below I have the standard questions (2009 version) as well as some special one-time-only questions. As with the general election, I don’t care how you vote; just vote!

Here's the deal. For each of these questions, give me a number from 1-10. 1 means you feel very bad/unhappy/negative about the item in question right now. 10 means you feel extremely good/happy/positive about it. (If you want to use decimals like 6.5, feel free).

You really think Moore is going to be able to pull off a Guillen trade?

I still believe in Moore,

and I think he will validate my belief by trading Guillen sometime in June/July. Don’t know how he will do it, but believe he will pull it off somehow. Perhaps Guillen could be packaged with somebody else at the deadline as sort of a “poison pill”?

Doing so will put him ahead of most GMs (I’m looking at YOU, Carl Peterson), in that it will show a willingness to admit a mistake.

3.5 (on the face of it, not so bad, but considering the Royals current players at the position and the F.A.T. or nearly-so out there, a bit wasteful)

4.5 (I actually like Crisp, but I think it’s a bit inefficient. If Guillen goes, I’ll bump this up to 5.5)

Will hit better than a 3. So will every other MLB team. Relativistics aside, I think that’s a gross underestimation of the Royals’ 2009 offense.

But even with major regression, Aviles can still be an average offensive shortstop — much better than Pena. Jacobs wasn’t the greatest acquisition, but as long as he isn’t taking too much playing time from Butler, then he’s an improvement (although for every 9 innings he plays at first, he’ll give up as many runs above replacement as he produces).

Crisp can be an improvement not just on defense, but on offense — particularly if Guillen is the one he replaces. Gordon’s still not a sure thing, but I think some improvement is reasonable to expect. Who knows with Butler at this point.

Anyway, I think it’s just a “feeling” test, not an evaluation. I do think there will be improvement — there’s just a lot of improvement before the Royals are near the top half of the american league . I think Stat Corner had them 85 runs below average in 2008.

1. How do you feel about the 2009 Royals team overall? – 5.5: I feel like Dayton’s offseason is incomplete. I want to see the moves he makes before giving a solid feeling one way or the other. With that said, I am optimistic about where the offseason is going.

I agree with JoPo that Banny is better than he was last season and I think a full year of Hochevar will be a good thing. A) 6. Relievers volatile statistics from year-to-year is entirely the reason for such a high number. Sure, Jacobs will give us some pop, but is it worth the decline in D and the terrible, JoGui-like OBP?

B) 8. Similar to the first one, but I like Crisp a lot more, and think that his defensive numbers are more like 2007 than the other years (it sound silly, to say one year is more like his real D than 06 and 08, but they are all so short it’s hard to get a definitive read from any of them) and I think he could semi-breakout with some consistent PT. RamRam, or whatever the nickname ended up being for him, was awesome last year, but again, the fungability of relievers needs to be repeated, as it makes the trade a good one, overall IMO.

And no, i dont think there will be a plane crash. We lost two parts of the best thing we had going for us, and i still think our position players do not have the talent to win on the major league level.

Teams without talent don’t win. We’re not young and promising, and we are not good veterans, we are just in betweens who make in between money and will stay in between the winners and losers with a sub 500 record again this season.

Surprised the Royals defense numbers are coming in as high as they are

Lots of 7+ for the defense. I was probably low with my prediction 1, but I’m just not sure how the Royals are going to go from one of the MLB’s worst defensive teams last year to one of the better one just by adding Jacobs and Crisp.

Crisp+DDJ will be an improvement, but not a gigantic defensive improvement over Teahen+DDJ or DDJ+Gathright. Jacobs may not be the everyday 1B, but some combo of Jacobs, Butler, and eventually Kila will spend a lot of time at 1B.

Of course, I’m also assuming that Moore is unable to get a veteran MI to move Aviles to 2B. A right side of the infield made up of Callapso and Butler/Jacobs/Kila would be pretty bad.
