I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) can be 6th

I combined “Cap in Hand” and “What do you do?” because I could’t decide which song on the same sentiments (scottish nationalism) I liked better

"I'm Gonna Be" has been overexposed, pop culture-wise

…but I think it is one of their best on its own merits.

The movie that changed my life

Actually, what I remember most about that movie is that I saw it as part of a preview audience. I was in law school at the time and the U. of Minn. had a free showing of it pre-release and we filled out comment cards afterwards to say what we liked and didn’t like about it. So I took part in shaping American culture. You’re welcome.

I sorta did that once for Rounders

although it wasn’t the whole movie, just a set of reactions to the trailer

this started when someone came up to me and my friends in a mall in Austin, TX

considering that many years later, Rounders, along with the game of poker itself, would become huge cult phenomena, I guess I should be proud

if only I could have also influenced Office Space and Swingers

Like many men 18-44, I own Rounders and love the movie. Of course it has the trailer on the DVD extras. It’s amazing how many scenes on the trailer are not at all in the final cut of the movie.

actually never seen it

but I am also horrible at cards, except for spades, which i used to love playing

by Freneau on Dec 30, 2008 1:30 AM EST up reply actions

Great movie

It’s no Citizen Kane, but it is highly enjoyable with great performances by Damon and Norton (possibly my favorite actor). And you don’t need to really be into cards or poker to enjoy the movie

I should hate Damon

but somehow I don’t

I wanna know what love is, I want you to show me

a few years ago,

I dated a girl who was head over heels for Matt Damon, I couldn’t stand him. But after we broke up, I slowly began to realize that he is a very talented actor. I especially liked him in Good Will Hunting and Dogma (which I get about 64.8% of my theology from, the rest is from Keeping the Faith).

But I still almost died laughing at the Matt Damon puppet in Team America.

I also really liked John Malkovich in that movie

I couldn’t eat an Oreo without laughing after that.

“Alright meester sonuvabitch, let’s play zum cardz!”

John Turturro was also great as Joey Knish.

I like Rounders quite a bit

But it was kinda ruined by all my friends in law school who glamorized that they could become Matt Damon and quit law school to become professional poker players.

can you blame them?

If I had decided on law school, I’d probably want to quit and become a professional poker player, too.

(No offense to the lawyers who populate RR…but I used to work for lawyers and realized after a couple of years that it wasn’t for me.)

I wish Rounders had come out in my first year of law school

It would have inspired me to leave. It came out six years too late. :(

as the 90s recede

I understand them less and less

the whole alternative/grunge/ethan hawke era thing seems to have totally left no impact on anything

now lets all go swing dance daddyo!

I wanna know what love is, I want you to show me

This Is A

Joke, right?

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

I'm really amazed

They have other songs other than “500 miles”. Good for them.

It's the only one I've ever heard,

but I do think it’s an awesome song. Not “oh-how-silly” kind of awesome, but genuinely enjoyable.

WTF, self?

by minda33 on Dec 30, 2008 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

Kinda romantic actually

they had a decent song on the soundtrack from "Shrek"

I can’t remember the name of it for the life of me…but it was one of two songs on the soundtrack that I remember really, really liking (the other being Rufus Wainwright’s version of "Hallelujah")

I can't understand why you'd let someone else rule our lives

Which song is that one? That’s Jackie Ballgame’s fave.

Especially when talking about himself.

Oh yeah, and stay tuned for the “The Legend of Mark Teahen”, coming to a blog near you

I'm about to change my username to DannyDuffyfan

That's from "Cap in Hand"

The “someone else” was the U.K. ruling Scotland. They were big supporters of Scottish independence, or at least autonomy.

What do you do....

when democracy fails you?

What do you do ….
When the rest can’’t see it’s true?

To me, these lines have seemed very “spot on” certain days.

I have a very good Proclaimers memory. Of me and several friends painting my old apartment. Windows open on a fall afternoon. Sunshine on Leith playing loudly all afternoon. Us singing “Oh Jean, Oh Jean, You let me get lucky with you!” Good times.

I really like heart felt political songs

(especially when I can relate to the message at least to some degree) The Proclaimers songs about Scottish independence come to mind, as do Midnight Oil’s songs about Aborigine land rights and Indigo Girls songs about freedom and justice (to name but a few).
