Royals sign Dylan Lindsay to seven year contract
Forget Mark Teixeira, the Royals just landed a huge multi-year deal.

He may be South African...
but at least he clearly understands how signings, contracts, and eventual destinations work in MLB:
Lindsay’s mother Tracey Lindsay said it had always been her son’s wish to one day rub shoulders with international baseball stars. She said his ultimate dream was to play for the New York Yankees.
"Quit trying to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring...besides that they're fascist. Throw some groundballs. It's more democratic."
I think this is a move to appease the disaffected Huber fans
replacing Justin with another southern hemispherian…

A “projectable body” with “good arm strength.” And that’s not a criticism. I’m glad the Royals are looking for toolsy prospects all over the world. Several teams went to scout the winners of an India-wide pitching contest. Some team ended up signing a couple Indian pitchers to minor league contracts. I’m glad the Royals are thinking at least a little outside the box.

I want the Royals to be the first organization to sign an Australian Aborigine, an Maori tribesman from New Zealand or perhaps an Argentine gaucho

i'm interested to know the terms.
7 years/$ ?

It's gotta be pennies
I’d be surprised if it was $100K per year. Probably a nice signing bonus, maybe $50-100K and then less than $100K per year. He’s basically just another undrafted free agent, and not one of those coveted Dominicans or Venezuelans either. He could be had for a song and I’m sure he was.

I was thinking more on the terms of
$500K bonus, $50K a year. That’d probably really help his family out and he’d have a lot of money over there. Not sure though.

I sure hope...
That picture isn’t of him mid wind-up, because if so Im not so sure that even Bob McClure can fix it.
It's an unconventional delivery
All wrist. It might revolutionize pitching.

We have gone to South Africa before
A few years ago we had a decent minor league reliever named Barry Armitage who was from South Africa.

Do you think its really a seven year contract?
Or a misunderstanding of the reserve clause by a foreign reporter?

Seven years?
I was wondering about this myself.
Stupid question, but can anyone confirm if this is an unusually long commitment to a 17 year-old international free agent, or fairly typical? How would this compare to a typical signing of a kid from, say, the Dominican Republic? Also, when the Royals draft and sign an average American high school player and sign him, for how many years is he typically under contract?
My impression was always that these things were usually year-to-year and that the club retained the rights to the player for x number of years, but I didn’t think it was a long-term contract of any kind (certainly not seven years).
I’m sure the overall guaranteed money is negligible in this case, but a seven-year commitment made me wonder.

And another thing...
This “seven year contract” didn’t even warrant a mention on the club’s official website, so I think there may indeed be a misunderstanding here.

Good point
I thought it weird that he’d get seven years guaranteed, even on a cheap deal.

Do we have his rights for seven years maybe?

That Might Make
Sense, since he’ll likely spend a minimum of 5 years in MiLB.

Sounds about right
I think for a player that young it takes that long before he could become a minor league free agent.
