The Office Season 5 Episode 9 Open Thread
The Surplus: A budget surplus causes factions to break out in the office over how to spend the money; Angela and Andy visit Schrute Farms.
For all the criticism I've leveled at the writers for their disneyfication of Pam-Jim, there's hardly another non-horrible relationship on the show: Michael-Jan, Pam-Roy, Kelly-Ryan, Kelly-Darrel, Andy-Angela, Andy-Dwight, etc. A middle ground? Probably Jim-Karen, I suppose, which seemed fairly realistic, not without benefits or obvious limitations. Maybe you can stay the same about Michael-Holly. So maybe we should give them a pass on the increasing annoyingness of the show's front-page couple. Then again, all the other couples mentioned, with the exception of Jim-Karen and maybe some of the Michael stuff, all the other couples on the show aren't quite fully "real" anyway: they exist to be funny and weird, and that's fine. For something like three solid seasons however, Pam & Jim were essentially the stand-ins for the audience, with all their knowing and frustrated glimpses at the camera. Dwight was never in that chair...
As I've seen mentioned on other Office sites, interestingly, is that Dwight is morphing into a kind of minor success story or badass or something. The Dwight is no longer always "on" him it seems... is he becoming the new Jim essentially, with Jim basically a more prominent David Wallace figure??

I think it is still a very good show
The Jim-Pam perfect love relationship is more than a little annoying. To me it has become this bizarre anomaly which doesn’t fit with the rest of the show at all. Quite frankly, I find it fun and interesting to watch this bizarre, story book think they’ve created. And the rest of the show and the rest of the characters (with the occasional exception of Michael) are consistently funny and well written. I think the show is exceptional…with one significant exception.
By the way, I’m very much looking forward to the trip to Schrute Farms. Did I see in the previews that Mose Schrute will be in the episode? The guy who plays that character is/was a baseball blogger, right?
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

right on
for awhile pam & jim were actually coherent members of the rest of the show’s oeuvre, but that was killed off systematically by Jim’s “I’m here to stay!” taunt to Ryan and Pam’s “you bought me a house” line
and that’s fine
its preferable to making them an on-again off-again couple and perhaps its preferable to making them frustrated and unhappy, since there’s probably only so much of that most people want or can take
its almost like the pam/jim plot line is like a bad, unmovable contract that sorta made sense in years 1&2, but is just an annoying holdover by year 4

Jim had
up to that point in the series (pre-buying the house in Scranton, etc.), always had the attitude that DM Scranton was a job he didn’t like and that he wanted to get out of there. Was this the same season that Michael did the survival thing while Jim mismanaged the office and had the “I won’t be here in 10 years line” to which Michael said “that’s what I always said?”

I wonder how much he gets paid for that.

Dwight as Jim
this has been hinted at (I think I’ve noted it) elsewhere — his screwing with Andy (not just the affair, but the Cornell thing was all Jim), which reprises the “switched identity” prank Jim pulled on Dwight a couple seasons ago, even to the point of ending the same way, with Andy coming in with a quasi-send up of Dwight just as Dwight attempted to do with Jim.

I agree
Creed is one of the best characters on the show, but overexposing him would be a mistake. I actually think the best part of the show is the characters other than Jim, Pam, and Michael. But those characters wouldn’t be as good if they had to carry a lot more weight.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

They had a few too many Creed jokes last season I think, and the episodes suffered. One or two lines an episode is about right.

Indeed
Or at least part of the character. The character Pam isn’t a sex symbol. She’s a moderately attractive, realistic, girl next door. She’s somewhat shy and very unassuming. A character like that can’t/won’t really vamp it up. If she feels like she needs to all of the sudden get flirty, she’ll put on some cheesy red lipstick in the hopes that it will work.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

but I can deal with it… Scranton isn’t actually in Lancaster country… in any case, I seriously doubt there are any German-language Mennonite churches in the area, especially given the age of the settlements in Pennsylvania. Even in the much more recent “Russian” Mennonite communities in, say, Kitchener, Ontario, there is only one High German service left. And that was 6 years ago, last time I checked.

I agree with the earlier comment that the fewer the storylines, the better. The stuff on Schrute farms was far more compelling of course.

I liked this episode
It wasn’t as good as, say, the Canada business trip episode, but it was alright.
Every second of the Dwight/Andy/Angela subplot this episode was hilarious. I have gradually begun to warm up to Andy this season, perhaps because I feel sorry for him for being stuck with Angela.
I will say that I really like that Oscar has been much more prominent in a few episodes this season, he is one of my favorite secondary characters and one of the few who can get away with being overexposed and still do alright (as opposed to, say, Creed). Oscar’s cold open with Michael, and the whole lemonade stand analogy, was pretty funny.
Mixed feelings about not having Ryan in the episode. I don’t like Ryan, but I love the scenes he shares with Kelly. Their relationship might actually be my favorite on the show because of how much they deserve each other.

Agreed
Oscar has surpassed Jim as the character most grounded in reality, but he is not above manipulating the others or pulling out a mean streak. Adding Oscar (or Darryl) to a story line tends to keep it from veering off into annoying asburdity.
For once, the Jim/Pam storyline worked. Hopefully, the writers keep realizing not every conflict between Jim and Pam has to threaten their relationship . . . or require a syrupy resolution.

I think Toby is in the hunt for that crown as well. He sees Michael’s inappropriate, often unethical and sometimes illegal actions and quietly points this out to him but doesn’t make waves. He’s a very realistic HR person, and quiet office worker.

I actually wouldn’t mind too much if Toby actually silently killed Michael one night. I think the Michael character is way too over the top. If he were gone and then there were a power struggle between Jim, Dwight, Toby, Andy, a hastily organized Finance Alliance and the Annex Consortium. That would make for a hell of a season, as well as more b-story lines for people outside of Jim, Pam, Dwight and Angela (not that I have anything against Dwight and Angela).

In that case, I guess we can look forward to the following scenes in upcoming episodes
Michael: Toby, I stole your identity, emptied your bank account and 401k, and lost it all on lotto tickets.
Toby: Michael, you shouldn’t have done that. The lottery drawing is a poor return on investment. You would have been much better off playing craps or blackjack in Atlantic City, or at the very least, buying the scratch-off tickets.
+++++
Michael: Toby, I f***ed your ex-wife last night. Twice.
Toby: Michael, you shouldn’t have done that. Employee evaluations were due this morning to corporate, and you have not even started writing them up.
+++++
Michael: Toby, I killed your mother last night by setting fire to your childhood home while she slept.
Toby: Michael, you shouldn’t have done that. With the city’s budget cuts, the fire department is significantly understaffed, and those guys could really use a full night’s sleep.

I think pat of what annoys Michael to the point of utter irrational loathing (which, of course, is one of the absurdly hilarious things about the character) is precisely Toby’s usual non-reactions to him. Jan treats him like crap (cf. Ryan’s reactions ot Michael), and he’s attracted to her, Toby treats him with kid gloves, and it drives him nuts.

good, but a little over the top
I liked it more when they hinted at Jan’s instability, rather than shoving it in our faces

I kind of like how the character developed
From a professional with some odd quirks, to nearly insane, to fully insane, to sane enough to part with Michael, but still at least somewhat unhinged.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

True
But it seemed to me that after that, he at least wanted to be in her life (and likely wanted more). She, on the other hand, wanted only what she could get from him (an occasional friend and some kind of baby-helper). She was an asshole to him, but was at least smart and well adjusted enough to know that she needed to minimize the amount of Michael in her life.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Jan and Toby show just how confused Michael is
he’s been treated like crap all his life, and so doesn’t know how to respond appropriately to that and the opposite

I'm still praying that Toby is actually the father of Jan's baby
There’s no reason to believe that he is, but it would be spectacular.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Creed would be good, but he's too obvious
You know he’s spread his seed all over the place.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I dunno, it was good, just a bit heavy. Pam never looked hotter. Cheesy but true.
how could I forget “Sexual Harassment?” Awesome all around — Todd Packer, one of the greatest “TWSS” moments ever, the doll…

Traveling Salesman and the Return
The first Christmas episode was great too.

The Injury, I believe.
The one where Michael burned his foot on a George Foreman grill.
“I don’t see what’s so hard to believe about that…”
