Royals Interested in Jermaine Dye?

Jayson Stark : "The Braves, Reds, Royals, Rays, and possibly Mets have shown interest in Jermaine Dye. Dye played for the Royals from 1997-2000. The White Sox are willing to trade Paul Konerko and Jim Thome too."

Unless it’s Dye for Guillen. That will be fine.

YES! Dye for Guillen, straight up.

If for no other reason than to watch the clubhouse fireworks that would ensue between Jose and Ozzie. They would either be attached-at-the-hip, crazy BFF’s or they’d murder each other before the Sox even broke spring training. Either way, you can’t go wrong with this trade from an entertainment standpoint.

I seriously doubt this

I really doubt the Royals would trade someone so they could pay Dye $11.5M.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Wierd.

Sportscenter just said at the end of the show that Dye had been traded to the Reds for Homer Baily but it has yet to hit the internet if it is true

Werd.

I think Dye would fit in perfectly

Good right handed power bat, expensive but short term commitment we can afford to take, and he is known to be a good defender (do the metrics still bear that out?). I think he would be a wonderful addition so long as we didn’t have to give up too much. I would consider dealing Cortes or Rosa for him. I think we have a window of competing from 2009-2010 (after that DJ, Greinke and Meche are FAs), and Dye would be under contract for 2009 with a mutual option for 2010.

not quite accurate on the FAs

Only Greinke will be an FA after 2010. Meche’s contract runs through 2011, and DDJ has a club option for 2011. I also don’t think it is our only window of competing—by 2011, at least some of the talent we’ve been stocking at A and AA ball (Moustakas, Cortes, Duffy, Wood, Johnny G, et al) will be MLB-ready or very close to it.

Well through 2011

I don’t think that’s our only window, but its the one we should be focusing on since we have no idea how our minor leaguers will pan out quite yet.

True

But point being, I don’t think it would be worth it to shell out a significant amount of talent plus $11.5 mil just for one guaranteed year of Dye—unless I knew for a fact that he would be willing to pick up his side of the mutual option, I would not do the deal, and even then, I still might not do it.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 8, 2008 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

Or, better put,

I don’t think 2009 is a win-now year for the Royals. I’m not sure 2010 will be either because I think by that point we will have either traded Greinke or signed him to an extension. 2011 is probably the year to watch, and by that point, Dye will have become an FA.

Although I like Dye

and UZR (STATS version) has him at +2 in 2007, UZR/BIS (Fangraphs) and plus/minus have him as one of the worst RFs (and defenders) in baseball the last three years.

Plus/MInus (Plays. Plays x 0.8 = runs):

2006-2008: -72 (worst over three years in R, Pat Burrell is -73 in left. Yes, worse than Manny or Ibanez)
2008: -17 (not quite as bad, 2007 was a disaster)
2007: -37
2006: -18 (inferring from data)

UZR/BIS (in runs):

2008: -17
2007: -17.2
2006: -15.1

PMR (plays):

2008: -11.6
2007: -5.8
2006: around average or -5, can’t tell which

Insert usual qualifications about defensive stats, and I’d like to know what UZR STATS has him at over the last three. CHONE (who incorporates multiple data sources) projects him at -6 for 2009.

so yeah, his defense seems pretty horrible — most stats have him worse than Jose Guillen, and I imagine it wouldn’t help him much to even out the playing time. On the other hand, he’s less expensive and can actually hit.

Hmmm that is a shame

He seemed quite good in his prime, I had not noticed a decline, but I don’t watch a lot of Sox games.

He's lost several steps

He still has a great arm, but he’s statuesque in the field.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I think that's the minimum requirement for all veteran RFs in the AL Central

No wonder the Indians are trying to unload F-Gut. All that “running” just raises suspicions of PEDs.
