Winter Meetings Day One Open Thread

The Winter Meetings have begun, much to my surprise, as I was convinced we were still a week away. Terrible blogging timing, as it were, as I'm trying to be a diligent young scholar this week, but tomorrow will be a better day. I'd hate to have one of my enjoyment of one of my favorite parts of the baseball season diluted by my ineffectual efforts at boosting my minuscule employment profile.

Post your rumors and reactions here. In the storied history of Royals Review, these W.M. Open Threads have always been fun.

I'll keep hunting for interesting links as the day goes on. Please do the same. And don't forget to check out Devil Fingers' fanshot and spreadsheet on the free agents.

How much is he asking for other than the Boras 4/52?

I’m going to regret not doing catchers and pitchers (line)…

Actually, 2/15 or 3/20 would be about right for Varitek, assuming he can start 120 games next year.

But I don’t know how to calculate the “C.”

Allegedly Tejada has been made available by the Astros

He’s making $13 million so how about a swap for Guillen?

Hmm. Glass and Drayton are pals…

BTW – Tejada is in his decline phase (wOBA .313) but his career wOBA is still .348 and James and Marcels have him projected somewhere in the .330-.340 range. Plus his UZR last year was 5.4 – though other years were considerably lower. (How does that work out?)

Anyways, I’d rather have Tejada than Guillen – even if the Royals had to eat the additional 2 million.

by jsolo on Dec 8, 2008 3:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have to get to work

but this is better

Marcels sees MIggy as almost average as a hitter (minus 0.6 RV/700), CHONE has him as an average defender. Let’s call it 0. +.75 wins for SS, + 2.25 for split NL/AL projection period = 3 × 85% playing time = 2.55 WAR player. Accord to the salary chart, that’s worth about $12.5 for one year.

Cots says he get $13M in 2009… is the contract really out?

Trading him for Guillen straight up would be highway robbery on the part of the Royals… Then again, this is the Astros we’re talking about.

Moore's comments on Teahen

Could be posturing, could be for real (that he intends to keep him), but one thing is certain: he explicitly stated that he does not intend to use Teahen as a fourth outfielder. So somebody’s going, no question about it, either Dejesus, Teahen or Guillen. A lot of fans ‘believe’ it’s going to be Teahen, but I think our reason for believing is that (a) we don’t think any team out there is dumb enough to take on Guillen’s contract (and baggage), and therefore (b) WE would rather trade Teahen than Dejesus. It’s the classic fan’s axiom of probabiliy: We want it to happen = it’s more likely to happen.

I’ve thought this over for a while now, in terms of probability (my highly scientific method that involves staring in deep thought out the window), and I think each of the three has an equal chance of being traded. It all depends on the offer.

And if that happens to be Guillen for Tejada…thank you sir, may I please have another?

Anybody notice this?

When asked about looking to trade Teahen, Moore doesn’t say, “We’re not trading him.” He says, “he’s extremely valuable to our team.” Instead of talking about how he’ll definitely be a Royal in 2009, he talks about his value. To me, that says he’s trying to maximize his value, not because he definitely wants to trade him, but because he wants his value to be as high as possible to help the Royals negotiating position for possible trades.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Lyon

I brought him up right after the season. The plus side is it gives you options if the Royals want to explore moving Soria to the Rotation. Especially now that the consensus backup plan 1 & 1a have been traded away.

There was also talk on a baseball tonight a couple nights ago that since there are so many good – elite level closers on the market, the price is going to be low on them (at least lower than past years).

Is he a type A or B FA? If he is an A, I wouldn’t sign him, but I’d look at it if he was a B.

Lyon is awful

His ERA last season ended up at about 4.7 and after July hitters had a 3.90 avg against, if I remember the stats right. There’s no way I’d trust him as a closer, and anyway, I think Dayton has pretty well squashed any hope Soria will ever see the rotation. Of course, there’s always the fan probability axiom (I want it to happen therefore it’s likely), which greatly boosts Soria’s future as a starter.

But any relievers we pursue are middle relievers. And I’d really rather try some young guys than Farnsworth (4.48 ERA) or Lyon.

I'm about to change my username to DannyDuffyfan

by jackie ballgame on Dec 8, 2008 6:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Here are the stats on Lyon per MLB.com

“A statistical barometer: through July 18, opponent hit just .238 against him but for the rest of the season the figure jumped to .392. Final figures for Lyon included 26 saves in 31 chances, a 3-5 record and a 4.70 ERA in 61 games.”

I'm about to change my username to DannyDuffyfan

by jackie ballgame on Dec 8, 2008 6:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

well

a .355 BABIP will do that to you.

relievers are weird, they can have a couple good seasons then a random bad season. lyon had two good seasons then had a random not so good year in 2008. the two projection systems on fan graphs have him at a 3.9 ERA for next year. that is not so bad.

For the record

(again) I am NOT for moving Soria out of the closer role, but lets face it, injuries happen, and ie he were to go down right a strain for even 2 weeks, who the hell do we have right now that is going to close when he is on the mend? Mahay?

We need to build depth back up in our ’pen. Somehow, someway. Not saying it has to be Lyon by any means, but we need to find 2 – 3 guys to add to the mix IMO…

his FIP and tRA have both been above average. Marcels projectinos (insert qualification) have him as 3-4 runs above replacement, and that’s without leverage. Projected FIP and ERA put him in the Mahay range — a decent cheap middleman.

The Royals certainly didn't need another mediocre 1B/DH type

but PrOPS says he was pretty unlucky this year. Not that a .798 PrOPS is much to write home about. UZR says he’s pretty good defensive 1B. I think it’s pretty obvious he’s being brought in as a platoon partner for Russ Branyan for nothing. That’s a pretty smart move for Seattle. Those guys together will cost less than Mike Jacobs, and I would be as much as $1 they will outproduce him in offense alone, given an certain minimum ABs.

Brandon Lyon

He’s a pretty good reliever with a decent recent history. Pretty good FIP and tRA the last two years. Nothing to knock your socks off, but solid. Less risky than Farnsworth. Speaking of Riske, Lyon is a guy who you could bring in for a one or two-year deal and then either flip at the deadline or turn into a sandwich pick, like Riske.

I'd much prefer Lyon to Farnz.

Farnz WHIP:

2006 – 1.364
2007 – 1.450
2008 – 1.525

Lyon WHIP
2006 – 1.298
2007 – 1.243
2008 – 1.483

And as you mentioned, solid FIP and tRA… I’d for sure take Lyon.

by CollininCalifornia on Dec 8, 2008 8:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I prefer Lyon to Farnsworth as well

But I have to say that WHIP isn’t a very good measure of pitching ability or even performance. It includes a lot of batted ball luck and defensive factors outside of the pitcher’s control. FIP, xFIP and tRA are better measures. (the first two available at Fangraphs and THT, the third available at statcorner.com). Lyon is better than Farnsworth in essentially all of the above for the last two years.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Would be great... but aren't the Royals set at DH?

REally, really good hitter… above average fielder when he’s healthy… I dunno. depends. Could get expensive. But when he’s healthy, you could make an argument he’s the best play in the FA market. Except he’s rarely completely healthy.

Milton Bradley is very expensive

Could this possibly be true? The Royals could only be seriously interested if one of the following are true:

1. Glass is willing to go considerably over $70M in payroll this year, and continue to increase payroll in the coming years (due to arbitration raises, etc.).

or

2. Moore is willing to trade Guillen for anything that will rid the Royals of his contract.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 8, 2008 10:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Option 2 seems plausible

but would any GM out there seriously bite on an offer involving all of Guillen’s contract?

by Bornin85 on Dec 8, 2008 10:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't think so

But perhaps 3/4 of it. Subtract 3/4 of Guillen’s contract, and add Bradley’s big contract and you may well have a payroll that Glass would agree to (particularly if they also trade away Teahen and/or Buck for cheaper players).

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 8, 2008 10:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

+1

I love Bradley’s bat but him and his gimpy knees, etc. aside, it only makes sense if he can move a big contract, i.e., Guillen’s. I just don’t think a long-term commitment to Bradley makes sense for the Royals in particular.

Frankly, I say he has more value as a 140 game DH than as a 90 game RF. Get rid of both Jacobs and Guillen and live with Butler at first. NO Gload, either. Just Shealy.

Hell, dump Shealy.

It’s a dream, but if Bradley can stay healthy and play RF, he DDJ, and Crisp would be really, really good on defense, even if Crisp is only average. Probably above average on offense, too.

I don’t thin, Bradley will OPS .900 in Kaufman, but I bet .875 isn’t out of the question.

How about this?

Trade Guillen and sign Bradley. Split Bradley between the OF and DH. Butler splits time between DH and 1B. If Hillman plays it smart, Bradley and Butler’s PT are both maximized.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

This is why I hate these rumors as much as I desire them

Their sourcing is as weak as a newborn kitten. This is Rosenthal’s Bradley/Royals rumor:

A Texas official said the club does not expect to re-sign Bradley, who hit .321 with 22 homers and 77 RBIs this season. The official said Tampa Bay and Kansas City are the leading candidates to become Bradley’s seventh team since opening day 2001. Tampa Bay, which had a luncheon meeting with Bradley, is considered the favorite.
Tampa Bay would use Bradley primarily as a designated hitter. Cliff Floyd, who will not return, was the Rays’ most-used DH this season. He hit .267 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs for 283 at-bats in t the role. Bradley also met with the Cubs on Monday, but the Royals say they are not interested.

So the source on this rumor that the leading contenders to sign Bradley are the Royals and Rays is someone in the Rangers organization? What the hell would a Rangers official know about who is on Bradley’s short list? And what is up with that last highlighted bit about the Royals. Are the Royals saying they have no interest in Bradley, or is someone from the Royals saying that the Cubs aren’t interested in Bradley?

Sounds like journalistic mumbo jumbo and crappy writing.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 8, 2008 10:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

tampa bay makes so much more sense for him

Make him the DH and that lineup and they will be bad-ass next year. Upton, Bradley, Pena, and Longoria 2-5 (hell, I’d lead Upton off, but that’s just me) is right there with the Sox and Yankees. Good defense and studly pitching…

But many players don't like being DH-only

That’s why it might not make more sense to him subjectively. That is, providing that the Royals promise him significant OF PT.

Milton's value

Let’s play with this, even though I’d bet a lot of money that it isn’t going to happen. D_f’s spreadsheet has Milton’s value as 3/60 (as an OFer) or 3/34 (as a DH). I assume that is assuming 150 games played per season. Let’s say that the Royals sign him as, and use him as 1/2 RF, 1/2 DH and that he plays only 3/4 as many games as that (113 games). My half assed math would say that his value would then be about 3/36. Does that sound about right? I’d be happy to offer him that. I’d even offer him more and risk that he might end up being healthier than 113 games per season.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 8, 2008 11:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Bill James has him projected almost exactly the same as Marcel

which says all you need to know about the reliabilty of the James projections, since Marcel self-consciously does not project for park.

I’d go 3/36 on him in a sec. He’s worth more than that (and I’d probably go higher), but the Royal need to be careful. In any case, they need to move a chunk of Guillen’s salary (or Meche, I guess, but then that makes another problem…) to make even that work. I’m not going to get into the Glass thing here, but there’s just too much risk involved having those two guys with those salaries out there. Only a few teams in baseball could sustain the loss of both those guys getting hurt/sinking to replacement level at the same time with those contracts.

I wish the contract could be incentive-laden, but it’s a year late on offering him that sort of deal. Maybe offer 3/36 and instead of losing it on refs and fans, Ryan Lefebvre will be waiting in the clubhouse to have Milton beat him with a bat (don’t injure those hands!).

I don’t know what I’d do… I do know that in 120 less PAs, his offense was worth 3-4 wins more than Jose Guillen’s. And that’s not a slam on Guillen…

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

Did you just bash Bill James?

Ho. ly. Shit. Who the F do you think you are??222

I’d go 3/36 on him in a sec.

Yeah that is my very safe value. That’s my “let’s assume that he keeps getting injured regularly and misses a lot of time” value. You’re right that they can’t take on the Milton risk in addition to the Guillen risk. Thankfully, I don’t think Glass is that spendy. I’d bet a lot of money that Glass isn’t willing to push the payroll up to $85M this year. Bradley is only possible if Guillen can be traded, along with most of his contract.

I don’t know what I’d do… I do know that in 120 less PAs, his offense was worth 3-4 wins more than Jose Guillen’s. And that’s not a slam on Guillen…

Wouldn’t it be spectacular for the Royals to effectively trade Guillen’s 2/24 for Bradley at 3/36? Or for Bradley at 3/40? How about this question…would you go 4 years on him?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 8, 2008 11:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This is the Royals Review version of "Who Would You Do?"

I don’t know. The numbers say yes, but Bradley doesn’t have a straightforward injury history, either. If it was some sort of vesting option, or reduced yearly salary, or club option, or combination of the three, maybe.

I’d probably go 3/$40M. I sure wouldn’t give a player option, though.

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

by devil_fingers on Dec 8, 2008 11:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My only addition to this

…is that teams like the Royals have to take risks. The Royals aren’t going to be able to win the bidding on safe stars like Teixeira. In order to get good production, they have to find inefficiencies and take risks. They aren’t so good at the first (except for being able to churn out tradable middle relievers) but they have to try some of the second. I wouldn’t shoot the moon for Milton, but these numbers seem reasonable. I might be willing to have a fourth year as something of a vesting option. Basically he earns a player option for the fourth year if he plays in X games or has X PA’s over the three seasons.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

If you are talking about the front office

…then how does a standard “power on the corners, speed up the middle” philosophy preclude them from taking risks? They may not be willing to take all of the kinds of risks you and/or I might want them to take, but they were willing to take a risk on Guillen (which turned out to be ill advised) and perhaps they are willing to take a risk on Bradley’s health. I think that is a positive, if true.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Valid point. Usually the standard thin, linear blonde doesn’t really do it for me. I recognize they are pretty, but that’s about it. But there is something about that Sara woman. I’m not sure what it is. Every time I see her, I think she kind of reminds me of someone, but I don’t know who. Like, someone I know who I’m in lust with. It’s weird. Anyway, she really is breathtaking. One little thing I noticed is that her teeth aren’t those freakish celebrity teeth. She hasn’t had a dentist line them up perfectly and cap them or replace them with porcelain veneers. She’s beautiful, and yet looks somewhat…real. Dayton Moore shoots down the Bradley rumor
11:20pm: Dayton Moore shot down the Bradley rumor this evening. The KC Star’s Bob Dutton says the Royals still like Rafael Furcal and Orlando Hudson, but they’d need to free up money first. They’d be willing to trade Jose Guillen if there was a taker, but don’t want to move Gil Meche.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

that's really too bad

I think signing Bradley would have salvaged the offseason.

More from Dutton
The Royals’ overloaded outfield prompted club officials to dismiss reports of interest in free-agent Milton Bradley, although that could change, possibly, if Guillen is traded.

and the signing of Grud gets closer

I want that draft pick damn it.

Another good thing about possibly bringing in Farnsworth/Springer/Lyon is the draft pick compensation they could bring back for the 2010 draft if they’re signed to one year deals. That is a long ways off, but I guarantee it goes into the thought process.

do they have to be good to bring back compensation? Because I have a hard time thinking Farnsworth will be, although Lyon looks good for the right price

Advantage B. Lyon

Farnsworth is the least likely to play well enough to become a Type B FA. Springer may well pitch at that level, but he could easily play one year and then retire (as he’s 63 years old). Lyon is the only one who is likely to be pitch at the Type B level, and also be signed in the following season by another team.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Crisp better be average (reach fo the skies, baby!)

Looking at these guys Marcels compared to Ramirez… well, it’s not that big a deal, but they don’t look as good.

Sky gave me some tips on incorporating reliever leverage, btw. Pretty interesting (if predictable) results for 2008.

My take on the 2009 bullpen

1. Soria
2. Rosa (replacing R. Ramirez)
3. Tejeda (replacing L. Nunez)
4. Mahay
5. Bale
6. ______________
7. Rule 5 acquisition

I think thats a pretty good bullpen. The blank was left for a potential FA signing. That’s my way of saying that the FA isn’t necessarily the Ramirez or Nunez replacement. Tejeda is a strikeout machine and I have a crazy mancrush on Rosa and his ability to miss bats and throw strikes. Other possibilities for the blank space above include pretty good relievers in Peralta and Musser.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 9, 2008 1:08 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

FWIW

Greg Schaum thinks Tejeda is a breakout guy for next year. I wouldn’t be surprised either if he was, the guy was made for the bullpen.

As long as they don't consider moving him back to the rotation, he'll be a definite plus for the Royals

Unfortunately, the Royals #6 SP situation right now is murky. If one of the top 5 go down, who steps in? Duckworth? Rosa? They might consider Tejeda, which would be turning a positive into a negative. Hopefully they never seriously consider this.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 9, 2008 1:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i doubt they will

maybe as an emergency guy, like they did in september during the doubleheader. i’d bet on Ducky being the #6 guy with what they have now. then again, DM still might acquire a pitcher. it will be less murky by the end of the season when possibly Cortes and Wood are ready. for some reason I am really high on Wood, i think it’s cuz he really improved his changeup and now has three legit MLB pitches.

My pick for #6 would be Rosa

I know he has had injury problems, but if he’s healthy, let him make some starts if someone goes on the DL.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 9, 2008 1:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

mine too

but only if he didn’t have to make many starts. remember he has pitched only like 200 innings the past two seasons. with his injury problems it would not be wise to push him too hard.

Founder of the Johnny Giavotella fan club.

by doublestix on Dec 9, 2008 1:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True

I wouldn’t heap innings on him. I was thinking spot starts here or there and/or making 3 starts while someone is on the 15-day DL.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

You can always find a #6

Late winter or early spring. The trick is to not find a #6 named Brett Tomko.

by GoBabies!! on Dec 9, 2008 10:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

one more thing

it sounds like DM is serious about Pimentel getting a shot at the bullpen. his future is almost undoubtedly in the pen, and the move now would probably make him ready or near ready. the knock on him is he’s sometimes inconsistent or loses focus on the mound. going one inning at a time would help that, and he does have pretty good stuff.

Founder of the Johnny Giavotella fan club.

by doublestix on Dec 9, 2008 1:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

In 2009?

If he gets some time in Omaha in the early part of the season, then I would consider it. But I can’t imagine he’s ready to be a major league reliever yet. He’s never pitched above the AA level and he’s coming off of a season which at best was mediocre. I think guys like him and Chris Hayes might be ready by midseason if everything goes well in the first half of the season.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 9, 2008 1:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it sounds like 2009 is what he is implying

i don’t know. i am a bit skeptical as well but it sounds like they’ll at least give him a shot. he’ll be in big league spring training anyways since he’s on the 40 man. give him a few innings and see how he does.

doubt it will matter anyways. DM will almost assuredly sign an arm and pick at least one in the rule 5 to go along with who we already have competing for spots.

by doublestix on Dec 9, 2008 2:08 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would imagine that it is the standard positive-spin-on-a-prospect that GM’s do, mixed in with some wishcasting. Seems like it would be a big rush to get Pimentel to the bigs by opening day. I’d be surprised if I saw him in KC before June (and that’s only if he starts the season in Omaha and pitches very well there in relief).

But this does underscore the point that the Royals still have some pretty good bullpen depth

Soria
Rosa
Tejeda
Mahay
Bale
Peralta
Gobble
Musser
Lowery
Pimentel
Hayes

Gobble and Peralta are arbitration eligible, so they are iffy. I think Gobble will be non-tendered and Peralta will go to arbitration. But I think that is a decent pool with nice depth. And I think you can likely add a Rule 5 acquisition as well.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 9, 2008 2:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Leverage

I wouldn’t evaluate relievers based on leverage. That doesn’t tell you how well a guy pitched. It tells you how he was used. It’s basically throwing in a statistical advantage for having the “closer” or “set up man” tag. For instance, Tejeda pitched essentially as well as Nunez in 2008, but I’m sure Nunez pitched in higher leverage situations. That doesn’t mean he was the better reliever of the two in 2008.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 9, 2008 1:11 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not evaluating their talent

just their value to the team in 2008. Yeah, RamRam arguably outpitched Soria (note that this is different than saying he’s a better pitcher) in 2008, but Soria’s innings were more valuble. They come out about equal.

Leverage aside, Tejeda had a better FIP as a reliever, but Nunez had a better ERA, tRA, and pitched more innings. But, yeah, I think Tejeda can approximate that role this year.

The more you guys talk about this, the more I’m convinced there’s no point to signing Farnsworth, for sure, or for paying too much for Springer or Lyons.

Leverage aside, Tejeda had a better FIP as a reliever, but Nunez had a better ERA, tRA, and pitched more innings.

True, but the difference in innings pitched wasn’t huge and was largely due to Tejeda being picked up during the season. And the difference in tRA was about .02 if I remember correctly. So I think they were very similar.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 9, 2008 11:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

tRA was .3 difference

Still, not a huge difference. I still say Farnsworth is a waste of anything much above replacement salary at this point if Tejeda can do this thing.

Any word on what Springer/Lyon would take to sign?

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

by devil_fingers on Dec 9, 2008 12:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry, I was thinking tRA+

Nunez 128
Tejeda 126

I guess that’s where I got the “2” from. Farnsworth doesn’t sound very interesting, but maybe they know something him we don’t. This FO does well with pitchers, so there might be something there. I haven’t read anyone even speculate about numbers for any of the three.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Dec 9, 2008 12:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yea

Lyon would almost assuredly be a type B after next year with a decent season.

Farnsworth had good markers for a rebound, his HR/FB% was a crazy 19%!!! Moving to the K would assuredly help him in that regard. A good season would probably put him in type B range.

Springer was actually a Type A, but the Cards didn’t offer, probably because they knew no one would sign him if they had to give a draft pick. Oddly enough, on a one year deal he might be the best option. He’s a fly ball pitcher that would succeed at “The K.”

Are you effing kidding me???

Via MLBTR: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2008/12/and_another_thi.html

According to one National League executive, the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves have had serious discussions about a trade that would send outfielder Jeff Francouer to the Royals for pitcher Zack Greinke. The same source said he believed the teams were close to executing the deal, but that Atlanta was holding up any and all trade discussions until the Braves had a resolution of their pujrsuit of right-hander A.J. Burnett. Current Royals GM Dayton Moore (who interviewed for the Red Sox’ job during Theo Epstein’s walkabout in 2005-06) is a former member of the Braves organization who is eager to bring Francouer to Kansas City.

This makes so little sense on every level that I can’t believe someone would print it. Then again, if there actually IS an reality to this…then, good God…I don’t know even want to think about what I’d do.

Posturing by the Braves in order to improve their chances with Peavy and/or AJ Burnett. My guess is the Royals may be interested in Franceour, but not for Greinke.

What would KC get in return IF:

KC traded Greinke+Guillen (Braves take whole contract) KC could probably only expect to get Frenchy + 1 solid prospect in that move wouldn’t they?

I think maybe this is a possibility if GMDM has a expensive FA in his sight and needs to free up payroll and he is relatively sure Zack is willing to wait until he is a FA to sign with anyone.

I don't think I would either...

but he’s been rumored as going to the Royals for quite some time, so that part of this possibility (Moore’s interest) is very realistic. If KC got Frenchy + high-level pitching prospect plus Atlanta eating all of Guillen’s contract, and then Dayton was able to use the Guillen-dollars to sign either Furcal or Hudson, then the end result MIGHT be bearable. But that’s only IF Moore could definitely get a deal for either Furcal/Hudson done (and Furcal staying healthy all year, if he’s the one), and Frenchy having a solid (if not very good) year. Plus, what the hell would the Royals’ rotation look like next year?

Still, this would only be an acceptable alternative if Moore was virtually certain that Zack just wasn’t going to sign an extension before he hits FA. And even then, by making them take Guillen and his contract (instead of getting more players/prospects in exchange), much of the deal would just effectively be covering for the mistake of signing Guillen in the first place. That would leave a bad taste in my mouth about it no matter how it turned out on the field.

How many more years is Frenchy under team control? At least he’s cheap.
