The End of an Era: A's Sign Mike Sweeney

It's official.  It's the end of the Mike Sweeney era here in Kansas City.

The Oakland Athletics have officially signed Sweeney to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

He will enter camp on Wednesday, February 13 with a chance to win a DH or 1B slot with the club.  A typical low-risk signing for a low-budget team in the midst of a 'youth movement'.  Probable tradebait mid-season, assuming he will stay healthy (which he won't).

To be honest, I'm sort of relieved Sweeney and his baggage - constant injuries and captain of a perennial losing franchise - are officially out of a K.C. players uniform.  I would be open minded to retaining him in some role after his playing career ends - either as batting coach, in the front office, or in front of a microphone.

Any thoughts on the signing?  What will Sweeney's role be in 2008, if he even plays?  I'm looking forward to playing against him in Arizona this spring.
