Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

It's fantasy time once again!

Hey y'all. Last year's fantasy baseball league was fun. I know most of us turned in our keepers for this season, but I'm getting a little worried. We haven't heard from Greg in quite some time. Are we still on for this year? I certainly don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I just don't know if that league is still going to happen. In any event, we will have to have more than one "division" this year. There are a lot of people wanting to play from what I have heard. My suggestion is to have 2 or 3 (depending on how many people want to play) leagues of 12-16 teams each. These would basically be called "divisions". Now, of course, we wouldn't be able to have the "division" winners play each other, so we could just say that there are division winners and the "champion". The "champion" would be determined by the best overall record of the division winners.  I may be completely off base. Maybe this is the dumbest idea you've ever heard of. That's okay. It's merely a suggestion and we can modify it anyway you folks want to. I would be willing to commish one of the "divisions" if necessary. Please leave your feedback. I'm ready to set up a draft because I have a really bad case of the winter blues. All this snow and cold weather is killing me!

I'm in
I'd be happy to get into any division.  My only input is that I'd rather the draft happened later in spring training rather than sooner.  That way, we'll have a better idea of which players will be in which roles in the regular season.  If we did it in the next 2-3 weeks, there would be a crazy amount of guess work involved.
I probably disagree with you.

Radical Idea
We set up two divisions, one an AL-only league, the other an NL-only league. In this setup, we could theoretically have the champions play each other in the last week (we'd have to score it manually).

Obviously, this depends on how many people are playing. I don't know if 20-24 people total would be stretching it too thin. I don't really know how feasible this is either, since I've never heard of it being done before. Anyway, just throwing it out there.

Also
I'm eager to join, but I wasn't involved last year. I don't know how that would work if keepers are involved. In my support, I'm currently in 2nd in the RR basketball league.

it doesn't matter to me

I think a big part of fantasy is head's up...
matchups...I played a rotary league last year and it was BORING...everybody held the same position for the whole year...I don't think we should abandon the keeper league, but keep the keeper league and then start a knew league with this division thing...we obviously can't stretch it too thin because there are a bazillion MLB team anyhow...I'd say we could actually do a 24 team league...this would be a lot of fun...or we could do the 12 team AL and 12 team NL thing and then watch the AL team crush the NL team in the self scored final...lets have a vote!

I also recommend we keep...
our RR screen names for this competition so we know who we are dealing with...this makes it a lot more fun...last year in the keeper league I would never know or remember who was in control of what team

I would love it if the
keeper league is still on, but we haven't heard from Greg in a long time. I like to be proactive rather than reactive and I want to give everyone plenty of time to figure out what  we're going to do. I know there are a lot more people wanting to play this year. That's why I figured 2 divisions would be in order. The reason I don't think AL vs. NL would work is because nobody would want to be NL. I would say both divisions use the same rule as last year where every team has to have one Royal start at least one game a week. Would that be corny?

the downside to matchups
is that it requires almost daily maintenance of your squad to maximize pitcher starts, etc. (It also puts a premium on starting pitching, whereas regular scoring ensures a more balanced approach.)

That sort of set up is fine with fantasy football, but it can get somewhat tedious with the number of games played and the length of the season.

Not that that's a huge problem, but it can turn off a lot of more casual owners.

The other thing, though, is that odds are that about 1/3 to 1/2 the league will not be managing their teams when July and August roll around.   As a result, you'll have teams who won't field a pitching staff, or will have a lone closer pitching in their bullpen, which leads to near 0.00 WHIPs and 0.00 ERAs every week, so no matter how good your team is at that point, you're almost always guaranteed to lose points in those categories when you play those teams later in the season.

Of course, you'll make up for it with advantages in the other categories.  But it's a bit frustrating when you win 7-3 or 8-2 against a team with an inattentive manager when you possibly could have won 10-0 if they actually fielded a squad.  It sounds sort of counter-intuitive, I know, but it happens.

I would be willing to be the commish of
a designated keeper league.  We would have the original draft this season and then pick the keepers in the fall.  Let me know if you would be interested.

was I in this league last year?
I think I was. If there is enough room I wouldnt mind doing it again, and this time actually paying attention to it.

baseball is my game, fogey
I didn't use my dad that much anyways, once I got the hang of it all. It's pretty hard to pick out players you don't know, do you agree?

Depending on the league
I'm in if it is not more than a 12-team league and the draft is not until closer to the regular season. Oh, and I prefer Head-to-Head, Rotisserie is way too boring.

by MileHighKCfan on Feb 19, 2008 11:51 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Head-to-head
My personal vote is that I love head-to-head and hate roto.  Roto is very boring with little or no change in the standings in the entire second half of the season.  Head-to-head is interesting every week.  Of course there is the problem that some people will drop out and there will be matchups against defunct teams.  But even with that, the positives for head-to-head outweigh the negatives.
I probably disagree with you.
