Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

I'm Not Dead

So anyway, I'm just checking this evening to apologize for the lack of the SB articles the last week and a half. In one of those little ironies that makes the victim (me) very frustrated, I came home for Feburary Break last Saturday and was almost immediately floored by a combination of work hours--I lifeguard. Yes, it's thrilling. Everyone else got recertified this week so now I'm rich--and, unfortunately, the Killer Monster Death Flu Germs from Zargox-9 who were coincidentally visiting our solar system this week.

So anyway, I'm finally getting over this flu, and I'm back at college on Monday. Hopefully this means I'll be ambulatory and writing again next week. Not that it's any change from the norm, but the diaries and stories during my absence look awesome.

Anyways! How about this guy named Huber?

Do you like this story?

Both great books, but the movies...
I loved the books and I thought the movies were ok.  The HGG movie was well done, but that book was so rich and full of interesting and funny bits that any movie version is necessarily thin by comparison.

I loved the special effects in the IAL movie.  What I didn't like about the book or movie is the whole zombie/vampire element.  Why does every catastrophe-leads-to-only-a-handful-of-humans-on-the-planet story necessarily lead to zombie/vampires?  I prefer the elemnt of those stories about  how one survives in the post-catastrophe world and how society/civilization is rebuilt.  Instead, those stories tend to focus on fighting monsters.  Regardless, IAL makes its predecessor, "Omega Man," look like a cheesy piece of crap, which I guess it mostly was.

I probably disagree with you.

I actually haven't see
I didn't see the movie IAL, which I'm sure I'd enjoy despite the somewhat mixed reviews, but I really like the HGG movie. I don't really disagreement with your idea that it's really only a small piece of that universe (especially if you read all of the books...), but I give them props for staying faithful to the spirit of the book. My opinion of IAL is based solely on the book, for now, and I thoguht it was really cool...the elimination of any real dialogue makes the first 100 pages quite different from anything I've read before (in fiction, of course).

Omega Man was Charlton Heston, right? Hard to be surprised that it was a cheesy piece of crap, really.

If you liked the book, IAL is worth seeing
The transformation of Manhattan alone is visually impressive.  And I think Will Smith did a good job.  You should be prepared, however, for the many sigificant plot changes in this adaptation.
I probably disagree with you.

lets add Soylent Green into the equation
I wanna know what love is, I want you to show me

I recently re-watched that
Hadn't seen it since I was a kid.  It really doesn't hold up very well.  Simple story, very linear, one twist in the end.  And if you know what the twist is, it makes the rest of the movie pretty boring.
I probably disagree with you.

they really could have done so much more with it
i mean, the whole over-crowding/global warming thing seems pretty fertile

the hardcore class divisions, furniture, etc... also interesting

there are some good things in the details, but yea, its all just the SOYLENT GREEN IS MADE OUT OF...

I read the book its based on (Make Room, or something like that) and its better

by Freneau on Feb 23, 2008 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

I agree
Lots of good raw material there, but they barely touched on it.  Mostly the movie was about the twist ending and the "relationship" with the prostitute/comfort woman.  My girlfriend said it would be a good movie to remake.  But the problem is you have to come up with a new and interesting twist ending.  The old one has become an uber-cliche.
I probably disagree with you.

The book is almost always better
Since it really is the original work. My personal attitude is that I remain devoted to the original book, and hope for a movie to be made out of it to "pay homage" to how great the book is.

Saying this tends to discourage the people who say "don't be that 'the book was better' person." Unfortunately, I haven't got the chance to read Make Room. I'll have to look it up.

FLU.... poor baby...
I think having some sexy young thing to rub chicken soup or Vix Vapor Rub all over your body would do you a world of good.  If that doesn't work Hot Toddy's would at least dull the pain.

Um...
was this post, perhaps, influenced by scotch? :P

Alas, the sexy young thing that matters to me is in another state, what with my college being in Maine and living in Mass...tragedy. Tragedy, I tell you.

(Disclaimer: I'm not talking about Scarlett, but sadly I don't think she's in Massachusetts either)

Further north,
but definitely close enough to have heard about that. Quite a popular debate topic in a state where the majority of arguments take place between farmers and cows.

Our Cows
Are moose, and the boys have antlers, not horns. This does not, however, negate the attendant dilemnas. I often am on the antlers of a dilemna.
I'm not getting older....oh, wait, yes I am....and slower.... and weaker. God, this is great!

I don't usually pimp out my diaries, but it would be great if you could post 8 numbers for the 8 questions in my Royals Confidence Index thread.  I'd really love to have your input before I crunch the numbers for the index.

Also, royaldaddy, grudz and other regulars, who haven't given their answers yet, I'd love to have you post.  I'd hate to put together the RCI without your input.  Not that this is something of genuine importance, but since I'm taking the fans' temperature, everyone should bend over.  Ok, maybe that wasn't the best metaphore.

I probably disagree with you.
