Great piece by Mellinger in today's Star on Sweeney:
Very good read, although I couldn't help recoil at this anonymous quote:
"Everyone knows how nice of a guy Sweeney is," one player says. "Everybody knows that. But sometimes it can't just be smiles and jokes and nice. Sometimes you have to get in someone's face. I'm pretty sure that's something this team could've used more of."
They could have used better players and a NL Central schedule about a thousand times more than face-yelling.
This story reminds me a lot of a piece on Reggie Jackson's final days with the (then) California Angels, think it was called "The September Song of Mr. October" or something like that. Anyway, Reggie is/was about as different from Sweeney as you can get, at least off the field...
