Open Thread ST Game #1 - Royals v. Rangers

From the diaries... We had a few Spring Training Open Threads last year, so lets give it a shot.-RR

Anyone going to be at the game?  Anyone listening on Gameday Audio? I will be amongst the latter.  If we have enough ppl perhaps we can do an open thread.

The weather sucks outside, but not in Surprise!

HOORAY BASEBALL!
Limerick time:

There was a young slugger named Huber
Whose career has sadly gone FUBAR
In the minors he'll rot
But he'd have gotten a shot
If his manager weren't such a goober

Jamey Wright
Jamey Wright is the only one I can see.

There is Jayhawk grad Travis Metcalf. And Rockhurt High School grad and son of former Royals great John Mayberry Jr.

I posted these last night on the RR poem request
If Zack Greinke fails
Loyal2theRoyals' dad
Will have to cheer her.

Can Trey Hillman-san
Bring what he learned in Japan
To the major leagues?

Is this the year that
Justin Huber gets a chance
To showcase his bat?

Will Grudz69
Get out of his easy chair
For victory scotch?

Gameday Audio on a PDA
Anyone have any luck getting gameday audio to work on their PDA? I'd pay the $15 just to listen to todays game at work this afternoon. Anyone have any idea who'll be calling the game today? One thing for sure though, it won't be Fred White, or should I call say "Grandmaster Play-by-Play"

Amusing
I found it quite amusing that you're not paying attention in class...  I mean, you're studying religion as your degree, right?  Not just some elective.  Just seemed sort of cartoon strip funny to me for some reason.  You know, like when you're taking your "final exam" with the Big Man and you have to admit that you were listening to a Royals game during your class on Genesis or whatever!  Forgive me for thinking that's funny, as I guess it doesn't matter what you're studying.  I guess everyone's mind wanders off during school - I know mine did.  And, you know, when my day comes to explain myself, I hope at least one of my excuses is the Royals!!!

Info on Audio and Webcasts
From Kaegel's article:

Webcasts available: Radio reports of Wednesday's game against the Rangers and all of the Royals' exhibition and regular-season games will be available as webcasts, the club announced Tuesday.

A subscription to Gameday Audio to hear live coverage of the Cactus League games can be purchased at Royals.com. To sign up, click on "MLB.TV" and then go to "Gameday Audio." The $14.95 package also includes broadcasts of the Royals' 162 regular-season games plus the Major League Baseball postseason games.

Steve Stewart, the newest member of the Royals' broadcast team, will give play-by-play of the 10 Cactus League games not carried on the radio network. Stewart will be joined by other broadcasters and Royals baseball operations officials during the webcasts. Fans can interact with the booth on the web at radiobooth@royals.com.

by RoyalJHWKR on Feb 27, 2008 3:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I was in the minority on Hamilton
I thought the Reds got the better of the deal. The guy has only put together about four months of good baseball. He's a drug addict and injury prone.

I wouldn't give up much for him. He's got huge potential, but he also has a ton of red flags.

I'm still skeptical
He barely played in 100 games last season.  And i have questions about his long-term health due to his years of drug abuse.

You're right, he could be a star.  But he's also a gamble.

As far as MLB.com, I guess my question is, is it the exclusive carrier of ST games or will KC sports radio (610 now?) carry some ST games as well.  If they don't I'll pick up the MLB package now.  $15 isn't bad at all.  Go royals!

Bale
So he strikes out the side in the first, and then gives up a lead-off double and a two-out double in the second for a run. Tough to rate that outing huh?

It's all practice, but it's fun to get back into the cheers and jeers of the game threads. First inning cheers for Bale, last inning jeers for Hillman.

by NYRoyal on Feb 27, 2008 4:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

guilty
I like his "pop" off the bench. I think he could be useful to a NL team with really bad starters at SS/2B as a pinchhitter/sub

by royalsreview on Feb 27, 2008 4:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

"pop"
Good thing you put that in quotes, because you definitely have to use that term loosely with a .405 career Minor League SLG%

by MileHighKCfan on Feb 27, 2008 4:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And a career major league SLG of .382
My 6-year old niece has similar "pop."
I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on Feb 27, 2008 4:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i really do think he has pop though
athough it is certainly debatable

its dragged down by the low BA, but he's posted respectable ISOs for a middle IF

by royalsreview on Feb 27, 2008 4:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If one can't make contact
...then what relevance is a player's isolated power?  If your "pure power" doesn't translate into a decent slugging percentage, it is meaningless power (see Brad Wilkerson).
I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on Feb 27, 2008 4:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i dont think it works like that
his "pop" could be useful because basically it means he has a higher likelihood to get an extra-base hit than, say, TPJ would, per at bat... but over the course of the season, they might end up with similar SLGs

if you needed a double or a HR, i could see it being better to have JS up than TPJ

(although tpj is also not really a great ex. b/c he also is a low BA guy...)

by royalsreview on Feb 27, 2008 4:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would always want the guy up who can get a hit
Instead of the 1-in-250 shot that Smith could get an extra base hit.  If you are choosing from two guys with roughly the same SLG, I'd pick pick the one with the better OBP to hit.  I wouldn't care at all about his IsoP.
I probably disagree with you.

Your AL/NL disparity remarks are hilarious
But I don't think the NL will be the chumps they have been in recent years' past.  I feel the tide is turning, but most of the large payrolls will probably remain in the AL for the next 5-10 years (NYY, BOS, LAA, DET...)

Jason Smitth has a new nickame or two
Jason "Pop" Smith
Jason "Little Poppy" Smith
Jason "Weasel" Smith (as in Pop goes the weasel).
I probably disagree with you.

After giving up that leadoff double...
I have the feeling Lawrence may be the 2008 version of Wayne Franklin.  Based on nothing more than a hunch.

Wasn't Franklin considered one of those extreme darkhorses for the #5 slot?  He couldn't even survive in Omaha.

Of course, I'm hoping for more out of the guy who shares the same name as my second cousin...

Wayne Franklin
I had him on the 25-man on MLB The Show for a while, but then I moved him back down to AAA.

I can't wait until
the 2008 games come out.  Have they scheduled a date?  It should be pretty soon, I think.

Don't know a date
but I hear that The Show 08 is going to be amazing.

If only Huber could hit well enough to DH
Because he should never use a glove...ever.
I probably disagree with you.

I thought it was 200
