I'm sick and busy with wedding stuff, or I'm sick of wedding stuff.  It is a fine distinction.  I am also feeling a cold coming on.  Don't want to spend Spring Break recovering.

I'm not much of a basketball fan, but
this Georgia team is one that you have to root for. These guys don't even have a winning record and are killing in the SEC tourney. 24-9 Georgia over Arkansas right now.

"As for first base, Hillman knows that Teahen and Gload have the ability to play the outfield, so their versatility does play a factor. Both Shealy and Butler have Minor League options. None of this, however, seems to make it any easier for Hillman to decide who among the four is best suited to start at first base on Opening Day."

Butler
There was nothing from the organization about Butler.  That was all from the journalist.  They have not mentioned at any point optioning Butler, nor would they.
I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Mar 16, 2008 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah
but if you're using the "rest of spring training" to determine who gets the job, shouldn't you then put more weight on Huber's performance?

It's dumb enough to use spring training to assign jobs, but it's even dumber to use it and then ignore the stats.   If you're going to go dumb, go halfway.

This space intentionally left blank.

by marbotty on Mar 16, 2008 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Huber
First, an earlier article said that they are using Huber strictly in the OF this spring, so 1B is apparently off the table for him.  Second, of course they should use spring training as part of the "data" for determining who gets to be on the 25-man roster and who starts and who plays which positions.  But, by "data" I don't mean A Game stats.  I mean everything that they see from these players throughout spring training.  Young players often improve from one year to the next.  They get stronger, faster, better bat speed, better plate discipline, etc.  You have to use ST to see if Shealy has his bat speed back, to see if Huber can play a position in the field, if he has major league hitting skills, etc.  Of course you couldn't and shouldn't base one's decision completely on how a player looks in February/May and no organization ever does.
I probably disagree with you.

as a clever ruse to confuse the rest of baseball and he will become the Wally Joyner of his generation.
