Butler *limitates*

Billy Butler invents a new word

Star-divide

I wasn't able to create a link but if you go to the Royals MLB site and check out the spring training videos you'll find one called, "Butler getting comfortable." In it Butler says that if you go up to the plate thinking only about home runs it "limitates" you. He then goes on to say that UNC will win the National Title...being a Kansas fan I don't know which is more wrong :). In all fairness the camera man was about four inches from his face.

Languages are fluid
I, for one, am very happy that Billy Butler doesn't limit himself to the official lexicon of the English language.  I think our language is all the richer for invented faux-words like "limitate" and "prabble."  Keep up the good work and stay classy, Billy.
I probably disagree with you.

I'm wondering
If there's a subliminable message behind it. Part of some new strategery.

"Limitate" Is Just
The verbing of a noun; happens all the time.
I'm not getting older....oh, wait, yes I am....and slower.... and weaker. God, this is great!

"Limitation" Has No
Verb definition; limit does.
I'm not getting older....oh, wait, yes I am....and slower.... and weaker. God, this is great!

Right
And "limitation" has a verb form:  "limit".  When something gives you a limitation, it limits you.  "Limitate" is a very odd, unnecessary and ungrammatical construct.
I probably disagree with you.

I Always Thought
So, too. Then I found this:

Roget's New MillenniumTM Thesaurus - Cite This Source - Share This
Main Entry:   limitation
Part of Speech:   noun
Definition:   restraint
Synonyms:   bar, block, check, circumspection, condition, constraint, control, cramp, curb, definition, disadvantage, drawback, impediment, inhibition, injunction, modification, obstruction, qualification, reservation, restriction, snag, stint, stricture, taboo
Antonyms:   extension, increase
Notes:   limit marks an end to something; limitation is the extent of one's capacity or a constraint that stops something.

What am I missing?
I didn't see anything there which changes our understanding of limit, limitation or limitate.
I probably disagree with you.

Limit And Limitation
Are not interchangable.
I'm not getting older....oh, wait, yes I am....and slower.... and weaker. God, this is great!

Yes, but
...the context in which Butler used "limitate" would have been perfect for the verb "limit."  While the nouns limit and limitation are not exactly the same, the verb "limit" covers a wide area.
I probably disagree with you.

That Never Stopped
Anyone; press, pressure, pressurize, pressurization. Do we really need all of those?
I'm not getting older....oh, wait, yes I am....and slower.... and weaker. God, this is great!

All of those words have different meanings
They all capture something the other words don't.  The verb "limitate" offers nothing not already covered by "limit".  I don't have a problem with linguistic innovation, if it actually moves the language forward in some way.  I don't see how this does.  I think it was just a not overly articulate guy misspeaking.
I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Mar 20, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

just because he was inarticulate
doesn't mean he didn't find a way to say something new. i love it - limitate. for example, disorienting and disorientating - same meaning but with a shade of difference in context.

I'm Certainly Not
Arguing that point. Neologisms are mostly pointless, and they clutter up the language with unnecessary syllables. To press is to pressure, but pressure is a noun. To pressurize is to press; unnecessary. Pressurization is pressure; by extension unnecessary. They have become accepted because we have accepted them, but they are not necessary to clearly express an idea. We just think they are.
