Spring Training Game 21 Open Thread
After a rare off-day yesterday, the Royals return to action this afternoon evening against the hated Brewers. Our beloved Brett Tomko will take the ball first, looking to rebound with a nice effort. In 10.2 Spring Training innings, Tomko has allowed 21 hits and 15 runs en route to a unsightly ERA.
Since 2000, no Royal has been plunked more than David DeJesus, who has been hit by pitch 54 times. Second, over that span, is Angel Berroa, with 49 and Joe Randa rounds out the top three with 34 HBPs.

Awesome
In 2003, when the Hawks made the Final Four, a friend of mine ended up buying a suite ticket at face value for the Championship game. I couldn't believe how easy it was to get a decent price for tickets.

There are a few reasons for that
- Stats
- Stuff
- The opinions of a front office with a very good track record of evaluating and acquiring pitching talent.
by NYRoyal on Mar 20, 2008 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well then
by RoyalsRetro on Mar 20, 2008 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't go that far
So if you've got a front office with a good track record on pitchers on one side saying that he's good enough to be a #4 starter and you've got some fans on the other side who say he sucks and should be released, I'm going to go with the former over the latter.

I don't see what the fuss is about Tomko
Bottom line: I don't see why he's become such a huge topic of debate, as no one expects him to blossom like Meche did last season.

all valid points
just a pointless waste of time
by royalsreview on Mar 20, 2008 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If
Every team neeeds to be at least 6 deep in SP's. Without Tomko, the Royals were about 4 1/2 deep:
Meche
Bannister
Greinke
Bale (maybe)
Hochevar (for perhaps 1/2 a season)
The Royals really needed a solid 4/5 guy (which is exactly what Tomko is and has been in recent years). There is still room for DLR and Davies to make some starts, but with Tomko on the team, we don't have to rely on getting something decent from those two.
by NYRoyal on Mar 20, 2008 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dayton Moore has done a good job of evaluating
Jason Standridge, DLR, Kyle Davies, Odalis Perez, Todd Wellemeyer, Scott Dohman, Scott Elarton, Russ Haltiwanger, Jose Diaz, and Tyler Lumsden would disagree.
On the other hand, Moore did bring in Banny, Meche, Soria, and Cortes. So, it's hard to judge, but overall it's been positive.
But he's definitely not batting 1.000
by marbotty on Mar 20, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let's look at that list
When you acquire pitching prospects, many of them are going to fail. So you have to look at how Moore has done overall. And Moore has done very, very well overall.
Of course he isn't batting 1.000. No GM bats 1.000. Could you or anyone disagree with the statement that Moore and his people have done a good job of evaluating and acquiring pitchers?
by NYRoyal on Mar 20, 2008 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i said it's been positive
Moore's trades involving pitchers have yielded the following:
Stairs trade: nothing
Graffanino trade: nothing
Burgos trade: likely a win
MacDougal trade: likely a win
Dessens trade: $5 millon less and perhaps a prospect
Dotel trade: nothing (most likely)
Affeldt trade: nothing (as far pitchers, and probably in total)
So in 7 trades, we have acquired nothing in 4 of them.
In the three we did well or may end up doing well, we traded away a former all star closer, a potential future closer, and a guy having a career year. These are the sort of trades in which you would expect to get something in return. It's still too early to call these wins at this point.
Does this mean Moore's hasn't done a good job? No. But it does mean he should be open to scrutiny or criticism.
We have to wait a few years to truly be able to judge, but he really doesn't have a slam dunk win at this point. Bannister is the closest -- if he pitches well again this year, then it's safe to say we got the best of that trade.
by marbotty on Mar 20, 2008 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow...you do love to be critical of Royals moves
When you trade mediocre players (the above players we traded ranged from below average to above average, but mediocre overall), you are doing very well to get something that turns out to be useful in 3 out of 7. Very, very well.
In the three we did well or may end up doing well, we traded away a former all star closer, a potential future closer, and a guy having a career year. These are the sort of trades in which you would expect to get something in return. It's still too early to call these wins at this point.
Oh please. The "former all star closer" was and is a usually injured reliever long on potential and very short on results. He is and has been a pretty mediocre reliever overall. The "potential future closer" is a pitcher who has never succeeded at the major league level, despite his good stuff. He was a persistent failure in the majors. And he had very risky mechanics. And those risky mechanics have led to Tommy John surgery. Who was the "guy having a career year"? The rest of those we traded were mediocre at best...and I believe all but one were part-season rentals.
Too early to call these trades? I can't believe you are serious about that.
But it does mean he should be open to scrutiny or criticism.
Let me repeat yet again that of course he is open to scrutiny and criticism. But his scouts have done a good job of evaluating pitchers. So that should be something taken into account when we as fans evaluate pitchers the Royals have acquired.

i blame Moore for Elarton's 9 starts in 2007
Moore had ample time to give the starting job to Greinke or someone else, but he waited and waited.
Moore doesn't get the blame for trading for Elarton, but he certainly should get the blame for making us suffer last year.
by marbotty on Mar 20, 2008 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What do you mean
In case you forgot, Greinke started the season in the rotation, and after a few great starts, messed up so bad that he was then moved to the bullpen.
Also, since when is it the GM who decides which pitchers that are on the roster get to start or not?

Very odd
So, you're going to have a dislike for a player if:
1. He was traded for a player you liked and doesn't become a star.
and/or
2. He performs badly in some games that you attend.
You realize how irrational that is, don't you?

Where do you get this stuff?
Beltran for Teahen, Wood, Buck--even worse
Do you base your opinions entirely on your heart and gut feelings? Because they certainly don't appear to be based on facts and stats. Do you know that Buck is an above average catcher? Please look beyond batting average and compare him to the rest of MLB catchers and you will see a young catcher who is above average for that position and improving. And yet his inclusion makes that trade worse? That's one of the silliest things I've ever read on any fan site...and that's saying something.
by NYRoyal on Mar 24, 2008 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Buck hasn't even hit .250
I stand by my assertion that Buck is the worst starting catcher in the AL Central. If the Royals are to escape the cellar, they cannot rank fifth in the division at lots of positions.
by jbrocato on Mar 24, 2008 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Batting average is a crappy stat
Given his (important and meaningful) stats and his age and the fact that he's still improving, he's an above average catcher. It doesn't take much research to see that. It is more than clear. But you can just look at batting average and close your eyes to everything else if you want to. After all, he did hit poorly in games you attended. What could be more important than that?
by NYRoyal on Mar 24, 2008 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Name one starting catcher in the AL Central
by jbrocato on Mar 24, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ok
Martinez 127
Mauer 117
Buck 90
Rodriguez 85
Pierzynski 83
Rodriguez's defense last season made up for his worse hitting, so he and Buck were at roughly the same level. Pierzysnki, on the other hand has defense at or below Buck's. So, Buck is clearly better than A.J. Rodriguez is 36 years old and has been deteriorating for the last 4 years (as players of that age always do). So Buck is about as good as he is now and getting better, while I-Rod is getting worse.
Here are a few more starting catcher OPS+ from last season:
Navarro 70
Laird 64
Kendall 48
Lo Duca 80
Olivo 72
Barrett 85
Estrada 78
Y. Molina 85
Ausmus 68
Ross 68
Paulino 83
Torrealba 75
B. Molina 86
So, if the rest were better than Buck, that still puts Buck in the top half of MLB starting catchers last season.
