The Big Prediction Contest

Many fan sites have big multiple prediction contests and since we like making predictions and competing against each other, I thought we should have one as well.  Here's the deal, cut and paste the following list and add in your predictions.  I'll record the entries and score them at the end of the season.  Will has generously donated a RR t-shirt as a prize to the winner

Predict the following team stats (give a number):

Record
Runs scored
Runs allowed
Batting average
OPS
HR
ERA

Predict who will lead the Royals in the following stat categories (give a name):

You should have a minimum number of ABs for the hitting % categories.

Yes
I realized I didn't put those minimums in shortly after I posted it.  I hope I didn't screw anything else up.  Turns out when you create this many categories, there are a lot of variables to consider.
I probably disagree with you.

Individual "leaders" means the best in each statistical category.  So, the BB/9 leader would be the pitcher with the lowest BB/9.

Predictions
Am I correct in assuming that for negative stats like bb/9 (for pitchers) or Ks (for hitters) we're predicting the Royals player who has the best season, i.e. the hitter with the fewest strikeouts? Reading through the answers so far, it isn't clear that everyone's on the same page. Anyway, here are my predictions.

Predict the following team stats (give a number):

Record: 86-76
Runs scored: 810
Runs allowed: 730
Batting average: .273
OPS: .760
HR: 145

Predict who will lead the Royals in the following stat categories (give a name):

Runs: David DeJesus
Doubles: Billy Butler
Triples: Mark Teahen
Home Runs: Alex Gordon
RBI: Alex Gordon
Walks: David DeJesus
Strikeouts: Mark Grudzielanek
Stolen bases: Joey Gathright
Batting average (min 125 AB): Billy Butler
OBP (min 125 AB): David DeJesus
SLG (min 125 AB): Alex Gordon
OPS (min 125 AB): Alex Gordon

Wins: Gil Meche
Saves: Joaikim Soria
Quality starts: Brian Bannister
Holds: Jimmy Gobble
IP: Gil Meche
SO: Zack Grienke
K/9 (min 40 ip): Zack Grienke
BB/9 (min 40 ip): Brian Bannister
ERA (min 40 ip): Joakim Soria

Yeah, that wasn't clear
I attempted to clarify in a comment above that the "leader" for BB/9 was the pitcher with the lowest BB/9 who met the IP minimum.  Unfortunately, for hitter's strikeouts, I actually intended it to be the batter with the most strikeouts.  But that is inconsistent with the rest of the individual "leaders" because it isn't the player who is best in that category.  Instead of trying to fix it after so many people have already given their predictions, I'm just going to excise this prediction from the contest.

So, BB/9 for pitchers is in.  It is the lowest BB/9 for pitchers with at least 40 ip.  But hitter's K's are out entirely.

I probably disagree with you.

Wow
You're not a fan of our ability win 1-run games, are you? Not many teams finish 28 games under .500 and are only outscored by 50 runs.

A couple notes
  • Where's Will's prediction?
  • I'm pleasantly surprised how high some of these win totals are.  When I think about RR, bastion of positivity isn't exactly something that comes to mind (for the record, neither does bastion of negativity).  Not that I believe anyone is wrong, but it's an encouraging sign that the consensus among an educated fanbase is so optimistic.  Makes my 75-87 prediction look gloomy & doomy.

A few other predictions. Grudz will give way to Callaspo at 2B this year. He probably will be traded. I’ll miss him. Buck will not improve. Teahen and DeJesus will show nice improvement in power and average respectively. Shealy will have benched Gload by the All-Star break. Pena will regress. Meche and Bannister will be solid. Bale will start all year and do well. Tomko will be fine as well but probably will not break 150 innings. Hochevar will be in the rotation by June.
Oh yeah, and Guillen will be marginally better than Emil Brown.

Tiebreaker

15 games?

I think the Royals have a shot at third place. I don't think they will finish in 5th this year.

by James Quinn on Mar 31, 2008 11:14 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, don't play with me.

All year I am going to be looking at Fukudome's numbers and Gullen's and wallowing in regret. Of this I am sure. I expect around the all-star break a lot of people will look at Guillen's numbers and Emil Brown's and wonder why Dayton Moore thought Guillen was worth $30+M more than Emil.

But then again, maybe I will be proved wrong. But in my three years of following the Royals I have never been so sure of any past transacation as I am today that signing Guillen was a pretty substatial mistake.

by James Quinn on Mar 31, 2008 12:02 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Of all of the things I'm sure

I'm sure of nothing more than the fact that Guillen will be much, much better than Brown.

In order for this to be a huge mistake, Guillen's stats would have to suddenly fall off a cliff. I don't know how you can be certain that he's going to suddenly be a much different player.

I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on Mar 31, 2008 12:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

when you say "better than Brown"...

Do you mean better than Brown 2005-06, Brown 2007, or Brown 2008?

There's no question he'll be better than Brown 2007. But I'm not convinced that he'll be much better than 2005-06. Brown 2008 is a mystery, but I think he'll certainly improve over last year.

In fact, as of this minute he's almost winning the triple crown. (Long live the sample size!)
