The pitching switch
It was weird. I watched the game on the Yankees network and they didn't find out the SP had changed until literally 5 minutes before first pitch. They had no idea what was going on. It wasn't until they were well into the first inning before they got word on Girardi's meteorlogical strategy. The New York sports media is hammering him for it today. Although, they recognize it is a moot point, because the Yankees didn't score any runs.
I probably disagree with you.
Both the Dodgers and the Giants did the same thing last week, also with young pitchers. A week ago Wednesday in Los Angeles Chad Billingsley and Tim Lincecum were the scheduled starters, and just like yesterday in KC the forecast was for rain showers severe enough to interrupt the game at some point in the early going. Near gametime both managers decided to start the game with bullpen guys -- Kuo for the Dodgers and Valdez for the Giants. Apparently it was Torre's idea initially, and Bochy liked the idea so much he followed suit.
That game worked out even more strangely than last night's. The rain eventually fell severely enough to interrupt the game -- but only after both managers decided to put their starters into the game in the 4th inning. So Torre wound up wasting a turn for Billingsley after all, as he pitched less than an inning. Bochy, however, put Lincecum back into the game after the rain delay, which was over 70 minutes long. Lincecum wound up pitching a total of 4 innings, and Bochy was criticized here for using Lincecum as he did even more severely than Girardi is being criticized today.
So far, Lincecum has shown no ill effects from pitching on both sides of that rain delay, as he was very impressive in his most recent start, Tuesday against the Padres.
sorry about the formatting.
my laptops down (take that, technology!) and my school computer won't let me update Firefox to v.2. That, apparently is what the SBNation warning meant when it said my browser wasn't compatible. i promise i didn't just type a huge blob of poop. frankly, the writing was poopy, but i swear i formatted it correctly.
The first thing I know about someone in a KC hat is that they're loyal.
