Game 10 Open Thread - Twins (4-5) at Royals (6-3)

Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals, Apr 11, 2008 8:10 PM EDT

The Royals resume hostilities with the Twins tonight, taking another crack at Livan Hernandez (please say in John Miller voice), a pitcher they made look like a Cy Young candidate last weekend.

Facing off against Livan is the designated #1 of the staff, Gil Meche (6.94 ERA) who lost control of a decent outing in that same weekend series mentioned above.

Do the Royals return to hackfest against the Twins? We'll see.

I'll be at a wedding tonight, so the site is in your hands. Let's win this one for Greg Gagne. And don't forget, Royals Review t-shirts are still available, so order yours today in time for RR Fest at the K, April 26.

Let's hope to see the Royals do a better job

of working the count and making Hernandez pitch. Livan will carve them up if we do the first pitch swing routine like we do with the Twins.

Just a side note - hear interview with Buster Olney from ESPN. He thought the Royals would be a factor in the pennant race all through the summer. The front line pitching can stack up the "big boys." I think "relevant" was the word he used for the Royals - wow, that coming from an ESPN guy is high praise.

Don't really get batting Butler fifth

He seems like your prototypical #3 hitter, both for old school baseball guys and for stat geeks. Still, its a much better lineup than Buddy ever employed.

Has anyone noticed that Hillman is almost the

opposite of Buddy when it comes to making out the lineup? This lineup looks like the standard for the first two weeks. When DDJ comes back, Gathright is out and let's hope Callaspo sees more time than Pena.

Have to imagine if and when Joey G. goes back to the 4th OF roll and spells Teahen or Guillen - Gathright will bat 8th.

Would Hillman look at keeping Gathright leading off when DDJ is in the lineup? What kind of production would DDJ have lower in the order?

by NHZ on Apr 11, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Slightly arbitrary,

because there ARE some pitchers who can handle high pitch counts regularly, but basically the different pitch counts of each start are assigned to a category. The higher the category, the more pitches thrown, and the worse for the pitcher's arm (or so the thinking goes). Meche was 11th in all of baseball in PAP last year. That's high to begin with, but then there's the fact that Gilgameche had never exactly been a workhorse.

by NHZ on Apr 11, 2008 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, come on.

Of course he's not "trying to get out". What kinda strawman is that?

Yes. He's pressing. He's pressing in a way that people require days off or a move in the batting order press. He's trying too damned hard, and it's now not a "guess" on my part like it was four days ago. It's plain to see.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Apr 11, 2008 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

No strawman

I didn't seriously think you thought he was sabotaging the team. I said that because I think the hate slung around at Guillen is getting a little silly. Butler swung at ball four and made an out with the bases loaded too...and I didn't see many critiquing him.

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

by NHZ on Apr 11, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Because

(a) "ball four" wasn't three feet wide and a foot low and (b) Billy's not hitting sub-LaRue.

I don't hate Guillen. In fact, I'll bet money that he'll spit out a .850 OPS in May-August. But right now, he is quite clearly mired in a horrible struggle, and needs to not be hitting between our 2-3 hitters (who are, combined, hitting around .350) and our 5-6 hitters (who, combined, are hitting around .375).

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Apr 11, 2008 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Well,

(a) It was still ball four, which was my point.
(b) And if he was? People who get off to slow starts often get jumped on while those who have the foresight to slump in august are regarded as better contributors, even if they end up with comparable stats.

I just doubt that moving him will make any difference. I see your point, but then we're of the mind that Guillen will get going, right? Why does it necessarily help to move him down, then?

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

by NHZ on Apr 11, 2008 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Arrgh.

(a) It was a hittable pitch; when you're down five, sure, taking a walk with the bases loaded is nice -- getting a HIT is better. This is probably one of the major flaws of the "OMG DRAW WALKS" philosophy. If you, as a hitter, really feel better about trying to get a hit that'll drive in two runs, you should probably be doing it.

He'll get going. He can get going just as well in the seven hole. Until he gets going, he's still killing the middle of an insanely potent middle of the lineup and leaving a lot of runners on. (Yeah, he's also driven five in; I don't discount that.)

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Apr 11, 2008 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

No one here

advocates a philosophy that could be accurately described as "OMG DRAW WALKS." I think the best approach is to work the count to your advantages to try and get good pitches to hit. If you get them, take advantage of them. If you don't, take a free pass. That's really the general sabermetric idea, too.

But much ado about small beer. Livan fooled everyone today.

Can you imagine

Manny and Guillen in the same outfield? That would violate the head-case quota.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Apr 11, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I love Manny

Some Sox fans REALLY hate him because they think he doesn't try hard enough. And I always ask those people how good he would have been if he'd tried. That usually shuts them up. He's just a goofball, plain and simple, and I really don't think he means to be offensive towards anyone. He's just kind of a baseball player from a different dimension or something.

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

I like Manny

He's just having fun, playing ball. Ain't nothing bad about that.

Emil and Guillen!

That would be a nice battle of egos!

But!

I should say that I'm glad you made the KU game. Sounds like fun.

Fun, well maybe, it was a win,

but it was windy and freezing out there. Really small crowd. About 200 souls.

Here is my write-up from Rock Chalk Talk about the game:
http://www.rockchalktalk.com/comments/2008/4/11/124352/782/2#2

Yeah, I'm glad I went. But by the 8th inning the cold had penetrated to my bone marrow.

The Hawks collared TTU golden prospect Roger Kieschnick today. 0-5. That was sweet.

Seems like a good team

to only have one conference win. Am I wrong?

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

by NHZ on Apr 11, 2008 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I think so!

I was full of optimism about my beloved Hawks back in February. The season has been very disappointing for me. They now are 2-8 in the Big-12. They have no hope of an at-large invite now so if Kansas is going to make the post season they need to do so through the conference tournament. They don't even get invited to the tournament unless they finish in the top-8, so every Big-12 game is precious.

I don't know, but physically, he is a big guy.

Tall, strong, good athlete. Plays a good centerfield. I hope the Hawks hold him in check all weekend. He really dominates their offense.
