Game 11 Open Thread -- Twins (5-5) at Royals (6-4)

Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals, Apr 12, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Hmm. So eighteen games against the Twins this season isn't sounding too fun, considering the Royals are now 1-3 against Minnesota, 5-1 against everybody else.

Tonight, the Royals square off against Boof Bonser (career ERA 4.75) looking to improve on a league-low 33 runs scored. And don't worry about the state of society just yet, at least regarding ole Boof... that wasn't his birth name, which makes it slightly better.

Countering Boof will be our beloved Tomko (career ERA 4.60) everyone's favorite stopgap in the five-spot.

Across the Midwest, the excitement is building for Tomko-Bonser. See you then!

Lineup Shuffle

Trey's shuffled the lineup a bit. I like it. I believe it's as follows:

1. Callapos, ss
2. Grudz, 2b
3. Teahen, LF
4. Butler, DH
5. Guillen, RF
6. Gordon, 3B
7. Gload, 1B
8. Olivo, C
9. Gathright, CF

Hey, if Tomko wins it will be the 2nd time this season he's stopped the bleeding of a 2-game losing streak. I guess that'll make our much maligned $3 millionn dollar man our stopper, huh?

I don't fight extra players.

I can't give you directions but there is a funky used bookstore that is in an old apartment building. It has about 20 small rooms absolutely stuffed with bookshelves. You can barely walk around inside.

You're totally missing the point. There are certain things you must do

To pitch a good game. One of these things is not walk Nick Punto, with a runner on base, and the top of the line up coming up. You cannot expect to win doing things like this. This is not winning baseball, and a perfectly valid criticism.

winning records follow good bullpens

by slayor on Apr 12, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

He missed on some pitches

No, he did not perform well against that batter. That is true. Is it a big deal? No. Does that mean he's not having a good outing? No. Was it a tactical error? No.

You're really overblowing one plate appearance

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 12, 2008 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Not overblowing it at all.

Good teams take advantage of crap pitching like that. Walking the #9 hitter in a weak lineup with a runner already on base is going to burn you the majority of the time. It's not smart pitching, if you can't realize that, I'm sorry.

winning records follow good bullpens

by slayor on Apr 12, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

It was ONE PLATE APPEARANCE

One little thing. And, is it "not smart pitching" to miss the strike zone? Do you think he was trying to miss the strike zone on a 3-2 count? He missed, period. You are blowing this wildly out of proportion. It has gotten silly.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 12, 2008 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

He missed 3 pitches in a row because he was NIBBLING

To a BAD hitter. That kind of scared, refusal to come inside pitching is one of the reasons Royals pitching has sucked ass for the past decade. Maybe he really wanted to challenge him and just missed. I don't know. But it was a bad sequence. The end.

He's a very, VERY good fundamental ball player. He's not going to make a bunch of mistakes that kill you. The only thing wrong with him is that he's just not a good enough hitter to depend on in the long run; outside of that, he's a perfectly likable and servicable placeholder, IMO.

Another unreasonable mindset I am falling into.

When Guillen and Pena come to the plate, I have already mentally conceded the out.

I really hope Guillen gets hot soon, so I can stop being such a hater.

The Royals shouldn't have to pay $36M for morale boosting fly balls.

But yeah, it was solid contact instead of a hacking strikeout, so that is good.

What's the over-under on number of games...

before our pitching staff just refuses to show up until the hitters can prove to the pitchers that they are worth the effort?

Also, how can a team survive by dinking like this? The Twins will be ok, but I don't see that strategy working too well over the course of the season.

He it pitching middle relief this year. He may be moving into the closer role. It looks like Smyth is going to be put into the rotation and, since Price used Garcia in the ninth today, he might have him in mind to replace Smyth.
