Two Gaping Holes
While our beloved Royals are off to a solid (and not expected) 7-5 start, I have to be a typical Royals fan and focus on the negative. Thus, this entry.
There are two gaping holes in the Royals lineup. One bats 4th or 5th, and the other bats 9th.
Step right up, Mr. Free Agent Bust, Mr. HGH, Mr. Jose Guillen. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if this guy proves me wrong and produces. But let's look at facts. He came in complaining that he might not get to play right because our ASSIST MASTER Mark Teahen was already there. His whining led to Teahen bending and moving to right.
Then, he promptly skipped Spring Training. Because he was a "veteran" who didn't need all the work. (Note: true veterans like Mark Grudzy actually can do this and still perform). Now, he has played in every game, and has managed a massive 6 hits in 49 ABs. To top that off, take those hits, mulitply by 2, and you get his strikeout total!!!! Not one HR for the prolific power guy, and today he was 0-4 with 2 K's and a double play! Oh, and an error that led to the Twins' only run.
A few other gems. Alberto Callaspo has 6 hits as well....in 18 ABs. Guillen is 8th in the AL in ABs among outfielders, and 64th in batting average! Only one outfielder who has played in all 12 games is batting worse - Jack Cust, a man in his second full major league season.
My solution: There is this guy down in Omaha named Costa. He's only hitting .350 with no errors, but I think he might be an upgrade. At a minimum, Guillen should hit the bench when (if) DeJesus ever comes back.
The second hole is the magnificent TPJ. While I do appreciate his fielding prowess, 1 friggin' hit is ridiculous. My blind, one-armed mom could have one hit after 30 ABs. Oh- and he has 8 K's to go with that big helping of nothing. No surprise, he is the worst hitting SS in the American League.
My solution: There is this guy down in Omaha named Angel Berroa. He does have one error, but I somehow think that his .371 average and 13 hits might make up for that. And I think he might have shown some promise at one point in his career.
Fill these gaping holes and you have at least one more win this season so far - and over a full season that translates to 12-15 more wins. And that could cost you the playoffs....

The Devil Went
Down to Omaha, and that's where he should stay. Guillen will hit when it warms up. We're 7-5; relax.

Your solution for SS is Berroa?
I'm sorry, I have to sound like a jerk about this. That's batshit crazy. You can make a pretty good Callaspo v. Pena argument--gosh knows, there has already been one--but Berroa stinks and there's no reason he should ever start for a major league team again.
HGH, by the way, does not enhance baseball performance! But why acknowledge scientific proof when you can pander to the witch hunters...

I wanna see more Costa too
I just don't know where to put him. I think he could out hit Gathright.

Can Costa Catch?
Because when Olivo DH's, Buck will surely die in a hail of gunfire and we'll need a guy who can cover until we can call up Tupman.

PECOTA's always liked him
It'd be nice if he could actually translate some his skills to the majors...

I Still Have
A hard time seeing Costa supplanting DDJ, Guillen or Teahen. Gator maybe, but he's shown no sign of doing it at the MLB level.

I agree with you about Berroa
But cmon.. COSTA!! Costa blows he is so bad and plays just as bad as defense in the bigs.. let alone we would never ever ever consider sending down Guillen but if for some reason a blue moon shows up and we decided too i would bring up Mr. Damon Hollins. especially for what he showed in spring training and he is averaging a walk or more a game so far and he has just as good power

And i agree with NYroyal
That you can call him a bust right now blows my mind. he has 49 AB's you do realize he is probably looking at 500 more AB's right. i highly doubt he will have a .120 average with 0 homers

30 ABs and 50 ABs is not enough time to assess
If fans in Boston were as ready to axe a player as we are, Big Papi would be down in the minors. Honestly, guys go on cold streaks. Guillen will pull out of it, so stop being such a negative Nancy.
As for Pena, if we had a power producing first baseman, he would be a good SS; I would rather have his defense at that position than giving it up for someone much more careless.

+1
I would also add that the 50 ABs being not enough time equally applies to Costa and Berroa. They may look good now, but I bet they start cooling off in a couple of weeks. We've seen what they can(not) do at the major-league level--they would not be improvements over what we currently have.

we do have two gaping holes...
one, you're correct, is tony pena. he was awful last year, and in my opinion was extremely lucky to be as good as he was.
the second, is ross gload. he's a guy id love to have to fill in at 1b and the corner OF positions. however, under no circumstances should he be starting for any mlb team. do we have a better in house solution?...maybe not. shealy's terrible.
if i were trey with our current personnel...
1b--gload 2/wk, billy 1/wk, teahen 3-4/wk
lf-teahen 3-4/wk, joey/davey 3-4/wk
ss-pena 2-3/wk depending on the pitchers and their gb tendancies, callaspo 4-5 days/wk
2b--grudz 5-6 callaspo 1/wk
i dont know how understandable this will read, but it's what i'd do. that being said, I think trey has done a good job overall of making adjustments to the lineup when necessary

What was the over/under
on Guillen being the first to become punching bag? It only took 11 games.
Talking about veterans from the Seattle organization, there's another guy who has had as rough a start as Guillen (think 55), but we're not calling for him to be banished to the pen. That's because most will accept that some players, from rookie to established veterans, can have a slow start. Look at Detroit--it's not like anyone's saying "That Cabrera guy? He obviously can't hit--let's bench him for Inge." And in that scenario, at least Inge has done something in the majors--Costa has never proven the ability to make the jump.
Hey, we came out hot, we avoided the curse of the dreaded 2nd week, and that's with a slow offensive start. As grudz would say, the glass really is (at least) half full.

Berroa and Costa?
I threw up twice when I saw those two names. Both those guys suck HARD! I'd rather just not play with a right-fielder than bring up Costa again. Same with shortstop. I didn't like the Guillen signing for his attitude and drug complications. But, there's little doubt that he'll eventually hit. Give him time and he'll be hitting doubles and homers regularly. Pena just sucks. But, right now, there's nobody else to fill that spot. I think we should be actively pursuing Brent Lillibridge of Atlanta, Chin-Lung Hu of the Dodgers, or Erick Aybar/Maicer Izturis of the Angels. I also agree with billybeingbilly that Ross Gload is the other hole in the lineup. I like Butler playing first with a revolving door at DH. That way you can rest a guy every once in a while without taking his bat out of the lineup and play for matchups when you need. But, dude, Costa and Berroa?......Uh-oh......Gotta go!

Berroa
I know he has become "he who shall not be named" around here. But just because we made the extreme mistake of giving him a long term deal waaaaaaaay too early, should we now make just as extreme mistake as NEVER considering him for major league duty again?
It's pretty clear to me that our long term answer at SS is not on the ML club right now. Find a place for Berroa and see if he can build his trade value. If he can bat .260 (.110 pts below what he's doing in Omaha right now) with a couple HRs we'd forget the name of TPJ pretty quick. And we've still got Callaspo and German.
Not sure of Pena's option status, but I can see him clearing waivers right now and hanging out in Omaha just in case. He could spend some serious time learning to hit.
As Guillen, I'm guessing a little warmer weather will do him good. He's just now finishing spring training. And he's trying to justify his contract with every swing. Once he settles down and just starts playing, he'll be fine.

wow
you made an argument for my least favorite royals players of the last three years....a guy who at best is a mlb 5th outfielder in the dee brown mold of lots of talent and no production or discipline in the majors (costa)...and a guy who WAS good at one point and consistently declined to the point of outrageousness (berroa). i think pena, despite his troubles this year, should be offended by the suggestion of bringing the devil back to kc..... as for guillen...the guy WILL hit. he has the track record. it's just embarassing to see him striking out all the time and dropping easy fly balls. we just need to hope he doesn't get pissed off and flip the fans off if we keep booing him.... because frankly, he deserves it right now and has been known for the short fuse.
Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.

Costa
Yea I still think he'd be a good player if given playing time on a regular basis. In fact, I think he'd hit close to .300 with 40 or 50 doubles. And yes, I seriously believe that.

yeah, I don't share the Costa optimism
I don't think he'll ever be a decent 4th OFer. Neither his bat, nor his defense will ever be good enough, in my opinion. Hopefully he'll have another good PCL season and then be included as part of a bigger trade to get someone genuinely good.
I probably disagree with you.

Totally agree on Costa
I just don't see him being an everyday player in KC. Not enough power for a corner OF nor fastest enough to be a speed guy. Guillen will be fine as the season goes on. Baseball players have a way of finding their level especially after he has played as long as he has.
On the other hand, TPJ doesn't have the track record of a Guillen. There is reason to be concerned with his offensive ability. Callaspo is a potential starter who doesn't have the glove but reports are he isn't awful. Also, KC needs the boost on offense. I would rather see Aviles than Berroa. The Devil's ship has sailed in KC - send him to SF or FL.

huh?
Just because I don't think he "sucks" because of his spuradic playing time in the big leagues I'm drinking some sort of kool aid? He has raked EVERY YEAR in AAA. He is a big guy with legitimate gap power and even athletic enough to play an OK center field. I am disappointed he was not given a legitimate chance to play every day in KC, but it's too late for that now.

I would say that he has sucked because of sporadic playing time
421 relentlessly crappy major league at bats. He's been given more than enough playing time to show that he truly stinks at the major league level. He just doesn't have the skills to succeed as a major leaguer. He looks like the poster boy for AAAA players to me.
I probably disagree with you.

Sporadic playing time?
It's not like he was one of those guys that gets called up and then rides the pine getting an occasional AB. When he was called up he played damn near everyday, whether he was starting or coming into the game later. And surprisingly, he started a lot of those games. Playing on an everyday basis as much as he has is not considered sporadic playing time.

Is it just me...
or did Costa seem kind of lazy in the outfield. I have distinct memories of him loafing to balls in the outfield and giving up an extra base. He just seems below average defensively and powerwise. He's not fast so he had better hit a heck of a lot of doubles to ever be of any value as a major league corner outfielder.

I've always thought that he was average-to-below average defensively
My read is that it isn't laziness or a lack of physical gifts. I just think he gets bad reads and takes bad routes to balls, a lot like how Gathright has been up to this season. It doesn't make any difference how fast or athletic you are if you take the wrong first and second step and then have to backtrack.
I probably disagree with you.
