Game 14 Overflow Thread
The Royals trail 10-6 late, and will need a major comeback to stop a swelling of support for the Mariners across the plains.
Can we please go back to 11 pitchers?
Seriously, this is ridiculous. You have a starting rotation which has given you over 6.6 innings per start. Hillman has shown a willingness to push the envelope a little with pitch counts; Bannister went 111 pitches Sunday and Greinke’s gone 107 pitches in back-to-back starts, which is nothing unusual in the middle of summer but a little aggressive at the beginning of April, in cold weather. The Royals have back-to-back complete games which represent a full one-third of the AL’s total of CGs all year. More than that, the Royals starter has completed five innings every time out, and has gone at least 6 innings in ten of thirteen games. On top of that, the top six men in your bullpen have allowed 4 runs in 29 innings 1 run in 26 innings. They’re lights out. Joakim Soria, Leo Nunez, and Ramon Ramirez – the Hispanic Panic (if you’re the other team) – have combined for 14.1 scoreless innings, with 8 hits, 2 walks, and 19 Ks. All six guys are fully capable of protecting a one-run lead in the ninth or keeping a game tied in extra innings if the need arises.
So why do we need Hideo Nomo, or any pitcher in that slot? Jimmy Gobble has thrown all of 2 innings this year – two devastating innings, I might add. He’s on pace for 25 innings all season. If we can’t find enough innings for Gobble, what do we need Nomo for?

DP
Ya know, maybe they should start carrying outs over to the next inning if you get a DP with 2 outs already. Whadda ya think?

Yeah, but you never see that

The Royals are making me think of the Chiefs
When they have a great offense, they have no defense and vice versa. When we have the pitching, we have no bats, but when we have offense, the pitching sucks.
And, of course, as Rany noted
when the Royals suck the Chiefs are good and vice versa.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Have to
he needs to get in an inning somewhere

Really, why?
I get that he hasn’t had any work lately, but you can’t get him some work in the pen? And it’s not like he’s the only one in that situation. Leo the Kid hasn’t been in lately, if I recall, nor Ramirez.
And when we explode in the top of the ninth and take a one-run lead, can you leave Soria in? Honestly, this just doesn’t seem smart.
by RoyalsFanInBillings on Apr 15, 2008 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions
What's the difference if he gets his work in
out in the pen or in the game. At least this way you stop the bleeding, either way he gets his work in right?

Plus
he’s probably gonna have to get some work in the pen after that short inning, or come out for the ninth. I have no problem with this whatsoever.

That's using hindsight, though.
Yeah, he got the short inning, but you don’t know he’s going to get that short inning when you send him out there in the eighth.

Flip side is
counting on scoring “as many or more runs” in one inning than we had in any game this season prior to tonight is not a good basis for making a decision.

LOL...good point
I was more looking for a way to say “I told you so” when I made that bold prediction.

I'll also go on record that I don't like Gathright as a PH right now for DDJ.
DDJ is more likely to get on base. If he gets on, then you use Joey as a PR.

so I had to put the child to bed
shortly after Nomo came in. What a disappointing decision by Hillman.
Don't Stop Believing!
Nice little test for Moore here
Does he immediately (tomorrow) demote, DFA or release Nomo?
Hillman had a little test today and failed it dismally.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on Apr 15, 2008 10:17 PM EDT reply actions
with our pitching staff
right now, there shouldn’t be mop up duty.
Don't Stop Believing!
Why?
1. Wouldn’t you rather have a better pitch for mop up or other duty? (like Peralta)
2. You can’t trust that Hillman will use him in strictly mop up duty.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on Apr 15, 2008 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions
He couldn't have been called up then
...because he had to be down in Omaha for 10 days. So I don’t mind Nomo being called up after Olivo’s suspension was up. But once Peralta’s 10 days were up, he should have been called up and Nomo sent down, DFA’d or released.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on Apr 15, 2008 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Isn't a "little test" the same as a quiz?
Actually Moore failed the first little test, or quiz, by leaving Nomo on the team after Peralta’s 10-day option period was up. Now he has another test/quiz. Hope he passes this one.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on Apr 15, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Just thought someone should disagree with you ;)
I don’t have any 1.15% ax to grind or anything. Come on over and have a beer. Tonight it is Abita’s Jockamo IPA
I'm not a big fan of IPA's but my fiance loves them
I’m more of a slightly boring lager man. Bass is my favorite.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on Apr 15, 2008 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Bass is good stuff
And even though I think their commercials are horribly cheesy, I do love Foster’s. I was drinking Tecate when watching the Royals this afternoon. I took the drinking up a few notches when Nomo went in, in the hopes I wouldn’t remember. I was sadly wrong.
Being in Portland, though, I tend to drink a lot of the microbrew ales.
i was drinking the
oak aged Yeto Imperial Stout, but now I”ve moved on to the Bouly Double Wide. Yay beer.
Don't Stop Believing!
i'm going to go with
whomever said that Hillman was trying to prove a point to Moore that Nomo was done so he ran him out there to get shelled and left him out there.
Don't Stop Believing!
Do you really believe that?
You think that Hillman deliberately blew a hole in the game to get Nomo off of his team? There is absolutely zero chance of that. If he thought he was a bad pitcher, he just would have buried him at the bottom of the ‘pen and not used him, which would be very easy on a 12-man staff.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on Apr 15, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions
obviously being sarcastic.
why woudl he throw a game?
Don't Stop Believing!
You never know what's sarcastic around here
...lots of “interesting” theories expressed.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on Apr 15, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions
but the decision
to go with Nomo is boggling.
Don't Stop Believing!
I'm willing to start a pool
to see how many more starts Bale is given before he gets bounced to the ‘pen. Say, three more outings to start, with an over/under of one.
I'd bet the over
I think even if his next start is bad, he’ll get one more. But I kind of think that two more bad starts mean the ax for him as a starter. But clearly I don’t have much of an idea what is going on in Hillman’s head. Maybe Nomo will take his spot in the rotation.
I probably disagree with you.
