Royal Runoffs

Just some stats of our former players, some with extremely small sample size.  Thought it'd be neat to see, I'll see about updating it every so often.

All players are still in the big leagues or likely to be so after a return from injury.

Star-divide

From 2007:

Jason LaRue (STL): 0 for 11, 4 Ks, 2BBs

Justin Huber (SDP): 2 for 4, K (pinch hitting extraordinaire)

Emil Brown(OAK): .261  .286  .370 in 46 AB

Mike Sweeney(OAK): .298  .382  .362  in 47 AB

Odalis Perez (WAS): 0-3, 4.35 ERA, 13K, 9BB in 20+ INN

From 2006:

Doug Mienkiewicz (PIT) .227  .393  .318   in 22 AB

Matt Stairs (TOR): .294  .324  .382 in 34 AB

Paul Bako (CIN): .364   .462    .485 in 33 AB

Jeff Keppinger (CIN):  .327  .387  .491 in 55 AB

Mark Redman (COL): 1-1, 2 GS, 5.06 ERA, 7K, 3BB 10 INN

Todd Wellmeyer (STL) 1-9, 3GS, 4.00 ERA, 20K, 7BB in 18 INN

Andy Sisco (CHW); Tommy John Surgery

Ambirox Burgos (NYM): Recovery from Surgery 15 Day DL as of 3/21/08 - I'd give more detailed info but as I'm at work, many sites are filtered, so someone else will have to fill in some proper details, but we all know what happened here (Highway Robbery).

Scott Dohman (TBR); The other half of the Shealy trade: 7 INN, 4K, 1 BB, 3.68 ERA

Kyle Snyder: Recently DFA'd after limited work and a ERA over 21.

Note: Most stats were taken from www.baseball-reference.com since it was so easy to search around on just one site.

NOW Sweeney gets healthy

Although I guess it’s still early. What was it usually, 60 ABs before his back flared up?

He hasn’t put up close to .300 in his first 50 ABs in many many years.

And VladEmil isn’t doing his normal April either. If he’s .260 now, he might hit .300 in June. Hopefully Guillen will pick it up and not make GMDM look silly for paying 12M for the “upgrade”.

Sweeney

He was hitting .320 after his first 50 AB’s in 2005, so not necessarily “many many years”. Unless each “many” represents only 1 year.

And Emil’s only good month in his career IS June so I doubt that he gets to .300 by that point, maybe by the time June is done he will be hitting close to .300. But that will most likely go back down in line with his career numbers.

Well...

I suppose in the baseball world, two years really is “many, many” in the sense that you can go from best Royals hitter of this generation to ?. And I don’t think he was anything close to .300 in his ABs last year at this time. If I remember he was hitting in the .250s with little power. Just a shell of himself.

You're right

last year he got off to an abysmal start.

Two years

Sure does seem like the ages of Mike Wood and Kyle Snyder were quite some time ago…. How things have changed / are changing

Guillen could hit .260-15-85

and it would still be an upgrade from Emil, on defense alone. God, I hate Emil.

By the way, yesterday, Guillen didn’t have much of a chance to catch that ball at the foul line in the 5th, as best as I could tell from 50 yards away.

Finally coming back to the 'K'!!!! I'm going to be there 7/11/08, vs the SEA Mariners, of course!

You may have mentioned it already

but what was the reception like for Guillen in Seattle?

i was sitting in the second row by the away dugout

and there was a contingent, probably unrepresentative, of rowdy douches yelling “cheater” at him every time he came off the field, but they also mocked the kid running out to the bullpen to grab the jacket of the relieving pitcher after he gets put into the game…

but the people in the seats around me that i talked to liked him. good production and loved that fire. can’t say they necessarily rued his departure, but by far no ill will.

a spring training hat? i may have seen you on the tv!

The first thing I know about someone in a KC hat is that they're loyal.

Another answer

He made it through 204 AB’s last year before going down. He made it through 68 AB’s in 2006 before limping off. And he played the entire season in 2005 except for a 15-day stint in the last half of June.

Just in case you actually wanted to know the answer to your question.

Paul Bako

Has just 20 hits fewer this year than he did in all of 2006 with the Royals.
