Who Has More Radio Affiliates? The Pirates or Phillies

Come, play my little game.

The first one to correctly answer the question -- without looking it up, I want guesses -- will win two free tickets to RR fest, which is set for Saturday the 26th.

Star-divide

So...

Who has more radio affiliates: the Phillies or the Pirates?

It's a Keystone State battle. The Phillies play in a bigger market and probably have many more fans, but how does that effect the radio side? Do the Pirates have any sort of regional reach? I wouldn't expect so...

Oh, so very interesting.

Pirates

I probably disagree with you.

I do

The Pirates have more “space” to build a network. Philly is blockaded to the east by the two NY teams, to the south by Baltimore. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, can reach deep into WV, into eastern Ohio, and maybe even western Maryland.

Further, Pittsburgh is surrounded by lots of smaller towns, where as Philly is surrounded by larger cities. I’d expect a lot of little Pirate afflilates in places like Grove City, Indiana, Altoona, Waynesburg, Beaver, etc., whereas eastern PA is “Allentown, Lancaster, Reading, Scranton, and a bunch of nothing.”

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

That's what I was thinking

Like the Royals, the Pirates have a lot of ground to cover. Obviously Ohio is pretty well covered, but there is West Virginia, Western NY, parts of Maryland and Virginia, as well as the western half of PA.

I probably disagree with you.

PA is a weird state

very weird

I know you are all dying to find out, so...

Phillies Network

Pirates Network

And the answer is:

The Pirates!!

The Pirates have 40 affiliates, including three in Ohio, one in Maryland and seven in West Virginia.

The Phillies only have 21 by my count, including one in Delaware and two in New jersey

NYRoyal is now the proud owner of two tickets (e-tickets) to RR Fest, as is JonfMorse (for giving a rationale first, not that that was necessaril a rule)

Alas, much as I'd like to

make my first visit back to the ol’ stomping grounds since 2004, I’m kinda stuck in VA for the time being.

Which MLB team has the most radio affiliates?

Any guesses? The Braves maybe? The Cardinals have more than Royals, who have more than most, I think. I could count them all on the team websites, but I’m not feeling that industrious.

do the cards have more? probably I guess

they probably have the most… cubs have a ton too

(checks)

Cards have 115, or did, two years ago

by Freneau on Apr 18, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Braves look like about 155

but lots of those are doubles (three affiliates/different radio frequencies in Murfreesboro, TN, for example).

Should an AM/FM affiliate in the same city count as two (especially if the stations have the same ownership)?

St. Louis has 112 different cities with affiliates by my count, and Atlanta has 118 cities. So I guess they have a few more. The Royals have about 70 different cities with radio affiliates.

by mikewormdog on Apr 18, 2008 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

i prefer counting cities

also, some of these affiliates very rarely actually broadcast the games and are cross-listed with other teams
