Who's to blame for the Phillies' struggles? Bar-right-arrows

9-7

Another chance for a mini-sweep, another loss. So should we blame Tomko or Grudz?

Tomko and Grudz managed to turn in nearly identical WPA's for this baby, "leading" the team with -.258 and -.253 marks respectively. Stepping to the plate five times and generating six outs is an impressive feat for Grudz, considering the rest of the team only made 21 outs combined.

Gordon's caught stealing was also totally nonsensical, so could also turn our impotent anger towards Hillman. I'm not gonna mess with Gordo however, his massive arms scare me.

amen brother

we just don’t have the roster for it, bottom line

ugg

Tomko wasnt great tonight, but he wasn’t terrible either. He stuck around, and sorta gave us a chance to win.

Yes, we could do without all the SB attempts right now.

By the way, I saw your post on Halos Heaven…and you might want to not even bother with them. Trying to reason with them is like trying to convince Will to stop posting pictures of his fiancee…Sterger. :P

I admire her restraint.

I probably disagree with you.

i haven't posted a pic of JS

in an actual post in a looong time, FWIW

Hallelujah

I agree. I don’t think he is calling for the steals, I think he told Joey he has the greenlight whenever. He needs to give Joey a big fat stop sign. Stealing third with one out and Billy Butler up is beyond stupid.

Blame it on Grudz..

Holy shit did he suck soo bad tonight.. i was holding back from beat my walls in he was soo bad. Starting from his dropped double play attempt which led to 3 runs then going to his swinging at the first pitch with the bases loaded and grounded out and lastly striking out on a ball that hit the ground with a chance to get us closer or give us the lead in the ninth.

I love life. Life = Royals

Yep, yep.

1) Tomko didn’t suck.
2) Aggressiveness does.

Optimistically, Hillman has evidenced a willingness to adjust and adapt in the past. Perhaps he’ll realize the damage this running is doing? I’m being too optimistic. Sucks.

The good news

We have Bannister vs. Gaudin tomorrow. Time to get well.

I probably disagree with you.

Good game

went out to anaheim. Left Westwood around 5 and was still late to the game. Got in around the second inning. LA traffic really actually is a bitch.

Game was fun, no one was really obnoxious, our seats were pretty close to our bullpen so got some cool pics of Soria warming up for the game he never got to go into.

We squandered waayyyy too many opportunities to score. We should have probably put up 5-6 runs at the least.

Tomko gave up 5 runs, but he really wasn’t getting hit too hard. He was just a pitch away from getting out of innings unscathed and giving up a run or two.

Got a Mike Scoscia bobblehead. Cool?

Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

+1 on everything...

especially the runs part.

both games we left too many runners on base, but especially tonight.

by rockchalk on Apr 18, 2008 2:34 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

We either have to start scoring sometime, or we're going to lose many games.

I don’t care how good the pitching is. Say somehow we posted a ridiculous staff era of 3.5 this season – which would be insanity – 3.24 runs a game or whatever still wouldn’t get the job done. Lots of hits, can’t bunch them, can’t get clutch ones. Seems like we are in a severe XBH drought.

winning records follow good bullpens

Offense

11th in OBA
12th in SLG
13th in walks
13th in XBH
2nd in caught stealing
14th in runs/game

Ugh.

Where can I find a good layman definition

for XBH??

Finally coming back to the 'K'!!!! I'm going to be there 7/11/08, vs the SEA Mariners, of course!

RE: SB/CS Ratio

When you compared SB and CS in the game thread, are PO’s factored into CS? They probably should be, as most PO’s are a directly related to a runner thinking about taking the next base.

by bfos7215 on Apr 18, 2008 9:41 AM EDT   0 recs

i am pretty sure that a pickoff

is counted as a CS in the stats.

i might be wrong, though.

by rockchalk on Apr 18, 2008 10:06 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

According to Wiki

“A runner who is picked off, when that runner’s sole action after leading off is diving back to the base, only to be put out, is not caught stealing. If during the play the runner made any feint or motion to the next base, then the runner is caught stealing, even if eventually put out in the dive back.”

Also, I do know in a daily box score CS and PO are different lines.

Re: definition

Also, allow me to say that the official scorer will often call something a PO that this definition would consider CS.
