Game 17 Overflow Thread

The mood has definitely turned sour, as the Royals trail the A's 5-2, and a rough start from Banny should mean there'll only be eight features written on him next week, instead of twelve.

You just can't go against Emil Brown and Mike Sweeney in a revenge game, can you? Well, actually, just Emil, since Sweeney didn't play and doesn't want revenge.

But what is happiness anyway, and how can we achieve it?

Ruskin tellingly remarked ''a man wrapped up in himself makes a very small parcel'', and this, alas, characterises too many people. The limited surface area of such parcels does not attract much of the golden dust of satisfaction.

The true equation between happiness and wealth is this: that happiness is wealth. Unlike wealth in the form of money and possessions, such happiness can never be quantified, only felt; and if one has it, it does not matter if the level of it always stays the same.

It's baseball, there will be games like this. And we follow the Royals.

There will probably be about 40 or 50 more like this before the season is over. We can’t have become spoiled so quickly? Could we?

One important thing:

We can’t blame the last five innings on the lineup or the roster or any of that crap. I mean, they’re getting our good hitters out too.

One day I'm going to see the guy

My Memories Of

No, Split.

“I don’t think the phone really rang in the bullpen, cause they’re looking into the dugout for a sign…”

They’re looking into the dugout in disbelief ‘cause Nomo got told to warm up.

Also: Nice defense, Pena. Good thing we have you in the lineup and not Callaspo.

I was going to write later on that the glare off the lights in left looks pretty bad, and that’s why I think Teahen was getting poor jumps. But TPJ moved the schedule on that observation up.

I was impressed by Banny’s delivery. Got to be rough to pick up what he’s throwing – could be anything. But he was missing a lot tonight – offspeed early not working for strikes, fastball up later on.

Alex put on a show at third early. Went up for a liner, went right for a scorcher. Wanted to see him go left too. Greedy me.

May be back tomorrow. Don’t know yet.

Bannister Had Issues

But Yabuta and Nomo were ridiculous. Nomo should be gone, and Yabuta is on notice.

agree totally

Nomo is shot and has nothing left. Yabuta surprisingly did not even make it until the all star break for hitter to figure him out, like what usually happens with new asain pitchers. They figured him out immediately. Oh well off to a party.

At the game today

So I was at the game today . . . sucked!
Teahan out there in left seemed to misjudge every ball hit his way, Bannister . . . while he did alright after a few innnings was getting outs with atom balls, not a good sign. Great defense in the early innings with a few snags by Gordon, and I had a front row view of Gathrights amazing catch. I left after the top of the 8th due to the frigid tempature, and I guess all hell broke loose.

Didn't Gaudin do this last year?

I know the most glaring thing is Yabuta-Nomo, but didn’t Gaudin rock the Royals hitters last year despite looking completely pedestrian in all of his other games?

by mazoboom on Apr 19, 2008 1:20 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought the whole experiment of gamethreadding from the ballpark had mixed results: it’s hard to keep up with others’ comments on a tiny screen, so if anyone wanted to ask me a question about what things looked like on scene I probably would have missed it. Also, it’s very difficult to make observations about Royals hitters and enter them one character at a time when their at bats last an average of about 14 seconds.

Some observations I did make: you didn’t need to be at the ballpark to notice, but Guillen did not get off a good swing all night. He took hittable pitches; when he swung, he was late. By the middle innings Gaudin was getting all the Royals hitters off balance and guessing wrong, but Guillen looked like he got off the plane guessing wrong. “No, Jose, the hotel’s that way.”

If it wasn’t so exasperating, I would have had to laugh at Butler churning noisily toward the tag at 2nd to end the 3rd, as if he was hoping he could make it look like a close play. But when you can count (and hear!) the runner’s steps after the fielder has the ball and prepares for the tag, a tremendous show of effort is just plain funny. That is, if you can distance yourself from the outcome a little. Or maybe a lot.

Banny closed out the third by getting Cust to ground out to Grudz on a pitch that sawed his bat right off. The end of the bat went flying over Banny’s head, and when he was walking toward the dugout he was talking about it with the home plate umpire, smiling and making the gesture you make for something that goes “whoosh” right over you. I’m guessing that you could see him do that on TV, as they often show the pitcher walking off the field at the end of an inning, but what you probably couldn’t see was the friendliness and naturalness of the exchange with the umpire. Seemed like two guys from cooperative guilds on the job, talking about some weird thing that happened on the job site.

Yabuta needs work. He looked like someone who gets behind the wheel and then all of a sudden realizes that he’s forgotten how to drive. First you put the key in, and then you turn it….no, Jose, not that way. This way.

Teahen hit the ball hard 3 times, and it sounded great coming off the bat. All for squat. And, as pointed out by our correspondent focs, he had a little trouble out in left. However, as I tried to describe last night, there seemed to be an unnatural glow of light in short left field - it just looked differently lighted from the rest of the field - that could have made it difficult for someone unfamiliar with that position in that park to pick up the ball. Maybe someone sitting elsewhere can comment on whether it looked that way from elsewhere—Mr. Weatherstone, did it look that way to you? Anyway, when TPJ ran out there for Brown’s popup he sure looked like he had entered in the glow of flying saucers. Somebody check his mashed potatoes.

Finally, although the Royals lost badly, there was this:

Can’t complain about that. Cannot.

by 2X2L on Apr 19, 2008 11:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Last Night

I couldn’t tell whether or not there was a glow from my angle (bleacher creature), but from my far vantage point it just looked as though he got late jumps, and was lazy in getting to the right position to make the play . . . and then playing the wall was another adventure. Gordon made some amazing catches and his swing is beautiful. Butler looked behind pitches the entire night, and an 89 MPH fastball seemed to take him off guard.
