Game 23 Open Thread - Jays (10-13) at Royals (9-13)
Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals, Apr 25, 2008 8:10 PM EDT
Days Until RR Fest: 1
It's a site tradition that whenever the Royals face off against A.J. Burnett that I mention an odd perk in his 5 year/$55 million dollar contract (insert Meche comparisons here) with the Blue Jays:
- $6M signing bonus
- 06:$1M, 07:$12M, 08:$12M, 09:$12M, 10:$12M
- Burnett may opt out of the contract after 2008
- limited no-trade clause allowing Burnett to block deals to 15 clubs
- deal includes 8 round-trip limousine trips per season between Toronto & Burnett's Maryland home for his wife
Eight hours in a limo. Fun! I wish I was married to a rich guy!
I'm crushed that Greinke is pitching tonight and not tomorrow, as I was hoping to see him live at the K.
Just a reminder, tomorrow is Royals Review Fest. Look for a blue Silverado in the East lot before tomorrow's game and a "Gload Will Explode" sign in the stands during it. I'll have some food and drinks on hand, and also some free video games if anyone wants them (MLB 08 The Show for PS3). Check this thread for more info, or shoot me an email.

Zach,
you’re probably going to need to toss a shut out…no pressure!!
I have many leather bound books...
Second!
To bemoan the Royals’ eternal crapitude!
A blue silverado?
I had you figured for a purple Taurus or a green VW vanagon. A silverado tho? Didnt see that coming.

Getting ready to brave the wind and cold.
My first game of the year, see if there is still any excitement out at the ballpark despite our familiar spot at the bottom of the Central.
I hope tonight isn't regression night at the K,
Zack needs to start K’ing more batters. That being said, I think we can get to Burnett. Call it a reverse lock theory: if we can get three-hit by Cliff Lee, we’ll hang some crooked numbers on A.J., right?
Agh. I will make it down to the K this year, and you all will have notice so that hopefully I can meet as many of you as possible, but this weekend is Sectionals for my Ultimate Disc club at college…so I’ll be at Bowdoin tomorrow and on Sunday. Bummer. Well, sort of. Can’t really complain about chasing a plastic flying thingy.

Lineups!
Bloo Jays:
Grit Personified – SS
Hill – 2B
Rios – RF
V. Wells – CF
Stairs – DH
Rolen – 3B
Overbay – 1B
Stewart – LF
Barajas – C
Our Heroes:
DDJ – CF
Callaspo – 2B
Gordon – 3B
Guillen – LF
Teahen – RF
Butler – DH
Gload – 1B
Buck – C
Pena – SS
and Greinke v. Burnett, of course. A.J. carries a nice little 6.85 ERA into this game. I fully expect the final score to be 1-0.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
Though, a couple things:
I like moving Gordon up. As Will said, he’s actually been showing power. Those first three hitters look like a good group to me, and if Guillen continues to make progress I’ll take it. I’d move Butler up one and swap Buck into the six spot since he’s been known to have a good power month or two, and Teahen needs to focus on driving the ball. Let him hack from the seven spot if you’re not going to use him at 2.

Let's hope the move of Teahen to RF is permanent . . .
Since he was clearly getting bad looks at balls in LF. Let’s also hope Gordon and Butler stay higher in the lineup.

Watching the ESPN game update . . .
the last two balls went right down the middle of the strike zone. Was that reflective at all of reality?
Zach doesn't have it tonight . . .
seems to be struggling through every batter. We’ll see if he can keep Rolen from scoring.
I'm sorry, but 8 years of this has left my patience really thin with bad baseball
I mean, when will the Royals learn to take a freakin’ pitch already!
Anyway, I no longer have faith, I need to see proof. Until proof, I am a cynic.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
What I want to know is what it's going to take . . .
to get these guys to take pitches when their manager is supposedly “emphasizing” it and the guys still swing at anything within 5 feet.
i approve of five pitch innings since it keeps burnett healthy
so he can still earn his limo rides for his lady.
i think DDJ will start to spark our offense
maybe not tonight, but sooooon.
please.
callaspo may be empty average
but at least he has an average, unlike tpj.
callaspo strike out
mlb stats say that’s his first of 2008.
best case scenario
team’s offensive becomes only moderately bad, meche gets back to 4.0 ERA for the year, and z-dog and banny-dog keep dominating. is 75-78 wins then a reasonable prediction?
Well, at least Gordon is taking pitches . . .
too bad he’s K’ing instead of BB’ing

Man, Burnett balks quite a bit with runners on.
He needs to work on that.
Frank has been really good in the TV booth tonight.
He has been able to talk about the guys he managed and about strategy without sounding like a pompous former baseball insider.
Proud father of a budding Royals fan.
We are the kings of many such things:
Turning 3-0 counts into strikeouts, stranding the few runners we get, singing at balls, watching called strike threes. Could it be that Barnett is slowly trying to undermine Hillman?

wow *swinging although they might as well carry a mike to the plate

Overall I like FSN better, but can we please build a camera nest in the OF.
I am tired of watching games through the mist.
Proud father of a budding Royals fan.
All this negativity...
could it be that this game is just your regular pitcher’s duel, and maybe we’ll break out offensively tomorrow? Nah, there’s no way that could happen. better to wallow in our misery, because THAT will help.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
I would buy that, if Burnett had not come in with an ERA over 6 . . .
and C.C. not come in with a high ERA a few days ago. These guys were not pitching like aces, it is the weakness of our bats that is making them look like it.
Burnett and CC
were both due for a good outing. They’re not bad pitchers, obviously.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
But why did their "due" outing come against us?
I think there is a correllation (spelling?) here, though obviously not statistical.
A combination of the fact
that they WERE going to get things turned around AND we kind of stink right now.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
Is anyone else kind of rooting

good play by eckie
hard to argue with defense like that.
no, we don't: i see a complete game shutout from z-dog.
and then we can argue all night about his pitch count.
I mean honestly, if Zach can get into the 7th . . .
and then hand the ball to Leo Nunez and Soria, we could win this. I am not hopeless, but also not confident.

Yup! I’m sure you were all waiting for me. I live in the Greater Toronto Area, and this is my first chance to see the Hillman-Royals on TV. It’s great—Gordon hitting third, being blessed with the presence of God (in His earthly incarnation as Matt Stairs), and a world class SUPER DUPER FAT DUDE behind the plate. Has anybody commented on this? Sweet bastard. I insisted the wife come look, since I was convinced he was going to have a heart attack before the 5th. Gotta be a scout or a sportswriter.
Sorry, just jinxed it with the Overbay homer…

But seriously, am I the only one? Did anyone else notice this dude? I mean, I don’t mean to offend you guys writing from you mom’s basement, perhaps this is a RR regular? I just can’t get over it. It’s awesome. It’s a prejudice I can’t get over, I suppose. I assume he had to get behind home plate because it doesn’t require any (non-Matt) stairs, right?

As I mentioned,
I’m getting extra innings as soon as I’m home for the summer, but right now I just follow the gameday thing on mlb.com.
Sadly, it does not tell me about REALLY fat people behind the plate.

Well, it should

That's the problem with our offense . . .
one mistake pitch and another team hits a homer. We get a single. It’s a hard hill for a pitcher to climb.

8 runs in a game
I honestly thought I would never see this kind of run production from the Royals. For reals.

Haha...
seriously, though, he’s a good reliever

all because of david eckstein...
after 8 days of getting like zero breaks, we have gotten a couple in this inning alone, namely the eckstein error.
Wow,
Just got home…That can’t be 8 runs I see!...........C’mon Soria…let’s end the streak!

His ERA went from 0.00 to 2.70 in one outing.
But that’s nothing. Downs went from like 0.82 to some much higher number.
but is in line for the win.
Don't Stop Believing!
Soria still perfect!

it's as automatic as the sun rising.

Zack Greinke thought bubble:
“You couldn’t have done this in, say, the third inning, nooooo.”
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Doubt he's thinking that. It's probably something like:
“I need to buy some rice before I go home.”

You can only buy 4 50lb bags now.
Hard times. Watch The Daily Show deal on it.

There's a worldwide shortage of rice. Sam's club, costco and the like are rationing their purchases.
Meaning they won’t buy as much, and it’ll get a lot more expensive.
ah yes
guess I should read news that isn’t related to my fantasy team

Eckstein HAS to get a “Most Valuable Opponent” Award for today.

you know
I had a really terrible day at work. I got pink eye from my niece. And then the Royals were choking… again. So I started drinking. And then the Royals started winning. And then we won.
Maybe the sun WILL shine tomorrow!
Don't Stop Believing!
i had tried that with varied results.
maybe i need to do a really in depth analysis as to when i start drinking, how long i drink, what i’m drinking, and any other permutation and how that affects the outcome of the game. i’m guessing that i’ll get to do 120-130 more trials due to day games, travelling, etc… so I should have a good amount of data to determine how to approach next year.
Or, maybe just drink some. during a few games. Royals win! yay!
Don't Stop Believing!
i just hope
i’ll remember where i’ve put all the data after a long stretch of “research”.

hey,
did anybody look up the Sweeney in CF reference? I’m too lazy to look it up.
Don't Stop Believing!
Wow guys, sorry that I missed this game
I napped right through it. Damn, sucks that we blew the win for Greinke! But beggars can’t be choosers, I’ll take that one anyway we can get it. Fantastic to see young Zack continue his development into the best pitcher in baseball. Ah, the chills I get while thinking about it…
winning records follow good bullpens
Huah!

OK, OK, so the Dean reference is dated. But it’s motivational, and hey – it applies!
Royals win! Royals win! Baaaaaaah, Royals win!
And temporarily, oh but just temporarily…..all is right with the world!
By the way, HILARIOUS moment....
....Did anyone catch David Eckstein sucker-punch himself in the face as he strolled down the Blue Jays’ dugout after that botched play in the 7th?! He just punched his right cheek slightly.
Any FJM reader like myself has to savor a moment like that.
