Game 24 Open Thread - Blue Jays (10-14) at Royals (10-13)

Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals, Apr 26, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Royals Review Fest Begins!

Come celebrate last night's crazy victory at the Royals Review Fest/tailgate, Mary and I will be in the East lot starting at around 2:30-3:00. Look for a Blue 2001 Chevy Silverado, and a Gload Will Explode sign. We'll have some snacks and such (no grill though, so nothing hardcore, by Arrowhead standards) and, again, I have some free video games to give away for PS3 (totally unrelated material that was sent to me last month).

p.s. I can't trust you anymore, Super 8 of Independence. Your wireless service is extremely lame.

Per Google Maps

I’m only 3,684 road miles in 54 easy steps from KCMO. NWA says I’m 2,916 air miles away from MCI via MSP.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Apr 26, 2008 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

Mapquest says I’m only 1799.35 driving miles away from 1 Royal Way and suggests I can make the drive in a mere 25 hours and 27 minutes. If only I’d made my plans a little earlier.

Everybody who’s onsite, have a great time at reviewfest.

Site Issues

For what it’s worth, I’m having some issues with the site. On Firefox for Mac, I can’t load threads with hundreds of comments - it stalls out, and stalls out Firefox as a whole until I close the window with the RR thread in it. This doesn’t seem to happen with Safari, though. Just thought this may be helpful for The Powers That Be since I think you’re still sorta the Beta test for the site design.

I hope everyone who’s there has a blast at RRFest! And RR, tell Mary I say hi.

the TO bullpen is pretty good, like KCs. But Downs probably isn’t available tonight (believe me, he’s actually good, usually), and accardo’s been flaky.

I don't believe you guys

Five comments about TPJ getting thrown out at the plate, which was stupid and directly cost a run. 11 about Jose doing what all players do 2/3 of the time, failing to get a hit.

Pena is to blame for that inning ending badly, not Guillen.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Apr 26, 2008 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Fair enough

But I think the main irritating thing with Guillen there (at least for me) it that he swung at the first pitch, right after two walks, against a guy who’s clearly having control problems.

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 26, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

This obsession with first-pitch swinging

is counter-productive.

What’s the purpose of taking pitches? To get ahead in the count. What’s the purpose of getting ahead in the count? So you have more chances to see a pitch you think you can hit.

So what happens if you really like the first pitch?

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Apr 26, 2008 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

did you see the first pitch?

that was just a fundamentally poor approach. He didn’t get his pitch and miss, he swung at the first offering and it was a terrible pitch

by wildthang on Apr 26, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

He had to lunge to just make contact. With no strikes you should never swing like that.

by James Quinn on Apr 26, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I know that

I’m just making a point about how every time someone swings at the first pitch and fails, there’s an outcry. It’s out of proportion. It doesn’t matter whether the pitch was good or not, everyone starts complaining. In this case, yeah, it was a bad pitch, but still.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

Looks like a run to me. Marcum is a gift waiting to be unwrapped on the mound tonight.

Yeah, no kidding, pretty impressive performance

Little wild at times, got a lot of swings and misses for a guy that only throws 90mph. Made some really good pitches at the right times. Similar to his last start a bit, only this time he executed when he needed to. Nice to see a guy learning on the job for once…

Ramon for the 7th? If he pitches well just run him back out there for the 8th?

Good outing by Hoch

63 of his 99 pitches were strikes, and 13 ground outs to only 2 fly outs. It is hard for the other team to hit the ball out of the park if the ball never gets more than three feet off the ground.

how has he acted like an ass though?

He’s playing hard…went to the manager when he thought there was something that could help the team…playing solid defense for the most part and starting to really hit the ball hard…ive got no problems with him…seems like royals fans need him to be awesome immediately due to his contract

There is a whole diary up about it.

by James Quinn on Apr 26, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess I just don't understand your thinking on this.

Before the season - before he had a chance to get to know his new team, decide whether he even liked it here, etc. - he made a play to keep his familiar position. Okay, not great, but again—he wasn’t even here yet.

Now, having been here a few weeks, he sees that a teammate is struggling and volunteers to trade positions to help him out. And you think he’s acting like an ass? I don’t get that. If I’m the manager, I want to see my players show that sort of concern for the team and willingness to adjust.

In other words, I think Jose’s on board. I think he’s grown up in a couple of short months.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Apr 26, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah, I dislike Guillen because he is a life-long member in the ass club

and I was unhappy when he was signed because I also did not think he would be a significant upgrade over Emil Brown, and a much worse player than other available free agent outfielders, such as Fukudome, Jenkins and Bradley.

If Guillen plays well I’ll try to learn to live with his offensive personality.

by James Quinn on Apr 26, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

What I'm getting at is

personalities can change. I’ve actually been struck by how humble and accomodating he’s been this year.

And keep in mind, I dealt with his shenanigans here in DC, so it’s not like I don’t know what he’s been like.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Apr 26, 2008 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, people can change.

I just haven’t seen evidence that Guillen has changed yet. When you act one way for 30 years, the burden of proof falls on you to prove that you have turned over a new leaf. So far Guillen seems very much the same man in a new uniform.

But we’ll see. I hope he has changed. I’d be happy to cheer for him.

www.rockchalktalk.com for pretty good KU baseball coverage

by James Quinn on Apr 26, 2008 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

We'll see.

I strongly preferred signing Jenkins and keeping Emil over signing Guillen. Jenkins and Emil would make a great platoon and cost less than half what Guillen costs.

But we’ll see. I expect Jenkins will have numbers pretty similar to Guillen’s this year.

Tony Pena

An outstanding defensive play to save two runs, and he hits a triple. Yet he still is a wash for the night after his mistakes are taken into account. I guess this is why he can never be part of the ultimate solution here in KC.

Ramirez really has incredible stuff, I don't understand why the rockies gave him away

Mid nineties and offspeed that falls off the table… He has the ability to A. rack up K’s and B. induce groundballs, which are in my opinion the two most important qualities for a bullpen guy to have.

How long before no one trades a pitcher to KC?

GMDM really has an eye for pitching and maybe other teams will begin to think twice if Moore calls about a guy.

He was out of options, coming off an injury, and had an 8.18 ERA last year

He is an example of why ERA, especially in small sample sizes, is not a very good indicator of future performance.

by Gopherballs on Apr 26, 2008 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

That is kind of my point he finds guys that seem safe to throw away

and then they do well under McClure’s tutelage. They also just showed that Davies has a .9 ERA in Omaha so maybe all hope is not lost on him as well.

RR fest was exciting!

I understand these things are difficult to assemble, as I have (on a certain other website which I promote all too often at RR) tried coordinating other various “days at the K”. Like it or not, many of us don’t reside near the KC area, and taking off business/work for an entire day is still tough. Even attending Royals games is tough for some. Luckily, I have lived at the Plaza my entire life, so I’m one of the lucky ones.

Well, it was exciting to meet Will and his fiancee at the truck before gametime. I’m honored that I was one of the first ones to arrive. I would have taken pictures, but I didn’t want to set anyone off. It’s always intriguing meeting internet posters face-to-face for the first time. Beyond these opinions and words we post here on message board/blog nation, it’s still difficult to actually view any of these other posters as ‘actual people’. We’re all faceless, it seems…..sometimes.

A special thanks to Will and Mary for providing taffy (I almost wrote ‘laffy taffy’ and then quickly rescinded that thought [or not]), Rold Gold pretzels, and an ale before the game. I had to meet two people outside the fest, so apologies for my absence (sorry I couldn’t meet you, shooter. And I believe one other person cavorted by as well).

Anyway, that was fun! We should definitely park up again and discuss the merits of all-time Royals great John Habyan.
