How do you not get fired from this?

The incident occurred toward the end of spring training when an afternoon sports talker at the station interviewed Jamie and Luke Hochevar’s wife, Ashley, in the stands at Surprise Stadium, where the Royals and Rangers share the campus. As the sport talker did his interview from the stands, the show’s other co-hosts listened and commented on the interview from the press box — Jamie and Ashley could not hear those comments.

The seemingly harmless interview took a nasty turn when Jamie was asked whether she knew who Yoko Ono was. When she said she did not, someone back in the booth or at the station hit a "drop" button that spewed the words "stupid b...." over the air. The same drop button was hit again moments later after Jamie answered another question.

Then later in the interview, one of the show’s hosts made crude innuendos about Jamie and Ashley, urging his interviewer to "try and get them to kiss."

Real classy

There is some good stuff and some boring stuff on talk radio. And there is also a whole bunch of pure crap that is out there to sensationalize, rile people up and/or be as offensive as possible. Unfortunately that kind of crap gets good ratings. And clearly this radio station cares more about ratings than anything else, including ridiculing and being intentionally offensive towards a couple of innocent players’ wives. On their next show I’m sure they went out and slapped around some homeless guys.

I probably disagree with you.

I would not want to make Alex Gordon angry

what a stunning story

i thought the only people who ever did anything sexist and crude and tasteless were the unwashed bloggers who live in their mother’s basements

Is this radio guy

known to be a Howard Stern-type shock jock? Is his modus operandi known outside his immediate (Dallas) broadcasting area? I don’t enjoy crude humor, but there’s obviously a HUGE market for it, and if he’s a member of that genre, then I can’t find myself too broken up about his crudity.

One does hope that the women in question knew what they were getting into when they agreed to be interviewed by this guy. If they knew he did crude humor but didn’t expect him to be that offensive, then sorry, ladies, no sympathy cards for you. If they were expecting normal and got totally ambushed, then that’s very wrong on the radio guy’s part.

Crudity isn't the problem

First, I’m sure those two women didn’t know what they were getting into. How would they know anything about some Dallas radio show? Second, calling her a “stupid bitch” goes beyond mere crude humor. That’s just plain mean spirited and insulting.

I probably disagree with you.

/agree

If that was my wife, I would be most unhappy.

The tactics employed by these people just really shows what a low class outfit they are, obviously. Having no moral compass might make you money in the short term, but utimately their karma will suffer. I kind of hope they ponder action like that in their life as they prepare to meet their demise. I think a lot of Karmic action takes place mental in the finality of life.

Why can’t people just follow the golden rule? Do you think they’d be laughing if someone did it to THEIR mothers?

Finally coming back to the 'K'!!!! I'm going to be there 7/11/08, vs the SEA Mariners, of course!

Good points

Reminds me of when Mr. Burns went on “Jerry Rude and the Bathroom Bunch.”

Rude: How are you doing, Mr. Burns? Jerry Rude. Welcome to the show.
Burns: I'm pleased to--
Rude: Alright, let's get this geezer out quick so we can bring in the lesbian gladiators.
Burns: Now, Mr. Rude, I just want you to know I'm a good sport, so if you want to make fun of my legendary love of cashews, you have at it!
Rude: Uh-huh... Alright, how many times a day do you go to the can?
Burns: Oh, about 40, I suppose. When are we going on the air?
Rude: We're on the air now, Skeleton.
Burns: What?!
Rude: Question two: How long is your wiener, seriously?
Burns: Great heavens! What kind of radio show is this?
Rude: How about this -- when was your first gay experience?
Burns: Oh, well, when I was six, my father took me on a picnic. That was a gay old time! Oh-ho, I ate my share of wieners that day.
Rude: Oh, that sounds lovely. [coughs "queer"] Um, ever murder anybody?
Burns: Murder? Well, mistakes have been made.
Rude: Monty, I've heard you're a pretty flatulent guy. Any comment on that?
Burns: Oh, now see here--[Rude presses a button making fart noises] Stop that! Attention wireless listeners, most of the sounds you are now hearing are not being made by me! Oh stop! Stop! Won't someone please stop the farting! [collapses on the floor]
Rude: Don't worry, folks, he's not dead. I still hear some faint sounds of life. [makes fart noises]

That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking of

In that scene, right before your quotes, Homer warns Burns that he’s going to be made fun of, but out-of-touch man that he is, Burns has no idea what he’s really in for. Mrs Gordon and Hochevar, on the other hand, should in this day and age be familiar at least in the general sense with the “shock jock” genre. If they were warned ahead of time what kind of show they’d be interviewed for, it’s a shame if they weren’t prepared for what was really about to be said, but that is what shock jocks are.

I highly doubt they were warned.

This is sports. They probably thought it was just some sports talk. I could easily see a radio show doing a story on the “Wives of the Enemy Team” to fill time before a game.

What an embarrassment

People dislike staring into tunnels without lights at the end of them. That gives us more elbow room for the exploration.

Here's why it's a problem

I just came here to post this as a FanShot, should have figured someone else would have. I appreciate the liason’s anger when the guy told him it was his job to apologize to Gordon.

I’ll admit that I’ve never really found Howard Stern all that funny, and never understood otherwise intelligent people getting into him (Beetlejuice is an exception). Having said that, people know what they’re getting into with Stern.

For a good take on this, check out

http://thebiglead.com/?p=5615#more-5615

Here’s their take:

“Now, Gordon wants to knock one of those radio punks out (the station has apologized; the radio hacks haven’t). You’ll probably wonder how we can enjoy Howard Stern on a daily basis, yet think these guys are douchebags. Stern’s up front with his interviews – if you agree to go on his show, you know what’s coming. Can the same be said for these clowns? We all know a fight won’t happen – Gordon’s wealthy and athletes can’t go around knocking people out – but who knows, maybe the radio guys grow a pair and show up at the stadium this week.”

if those guys from that show appear in the royals clubhouse....

the royals should make them their stupid bitch by way of a beatdown. leave the players’ wives out of this garbage. go to alex gordon. he’s a man! he’s 24!

Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.

How can we recommend a comment

Any Mike Gundy reference gets a +1 from me.

See that little gear under the comment next to reply? The one right before “actions”. Click “actions” that will open up “Flag” and “Rec.”

Hit ‘Rec’ to recommend the comment.

saw I did it successfully elsewhere, just didn’t see it on the comment.

i'm a relatively recent Stern convert

i’ve been listening to him for probably 6 months (this is recent, considering the 25 year history of the show). An important part of that is the one where crank calls are planned/exectued/produced and cleared before airing. people want to talk about morals, but i’d throw out there that the stern crew is at least honest, forthright and somewhat grounded. local radio (even in a ‘major market’ like ‘Dallas’ which doesn’t seem that ‘big’ to ‘me’) douchebags airing live material? seriously? i hope the get jacked the fuck up.

The first thing I know about someone in a KC hat is that they're loyal.

DFW

Huge market. 5th largest market in the country according to Arbitron, the company that does ratings for radio (analogous to Nielson, the TV ratings supplier). Just short of 5 million in the market.
