So when the sixth inning starts, head up here. It'll help the load times on the page.

Pena is getting some early tests

I think Trey is going to let him play everyday for a while, including in some clutch situations to see what they have in him. Has he improved? Can he handle the pressure, etc.? So, no pinch hitting yet. But that will change eventually. I don't mind him giving Pena a thorough shot.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

Meh

I disagree. I am happy with the direction of this franchise, but it seems like your thinking lately has been "If Dayton and Trey do it, therefore it must be the right move."

They make mistakes too.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, they make mistakes

But I don't disagree with them giving a long leash to a SS with gold glove caliber defense.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not talking about benching Pena

But there's nothing wrong with pinch hitting for him with two runners on.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

In the 6th inning?

That's a short leash. Letting him play 2/3 of a game and not letting him hit in clutch situations. That isn't how you develop a player. That's how you give up on a player slowly.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope

Few players on this team have earned the chance to play nine innings of every game. Pena is still a young guy. Teams all over the league pinch hit for younger, weaker hitters all the time. Its not giving up on a guy, its going for a win.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

He hasn't earned that, no.

But we're rebuilding, not contending. So you waste plate appearances on Pena in the hopes that you are developing him into a better hitter. when you are rebuilding, you make some moves which don't maximize the win potential. Hell, that's why Pena's on the team.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Better hitter?

What are the odds TPJ ever becomes a better hitter? There is little in his minor league track record to suggest he'll ever be much better than he was last year.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

His best months last year were June, July and September and he hit pretty well. You may be ready to give up on him, but I certainly wouldn't. Callaspo really isn't a SS; he'll make a good 2B. I'd definitely at least give a good shot to Pena to see if they can develop him a bit. A little more plate discipline, some bunt hits and a bit more contact and you would have acceptable offense with a GG defense. It makes no sense to give up on him so the Royals can maybe win 2 more games this year with no plan for SS beyond 2008.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Overstating things quite a bit

Pinch hitting for him in the sixth is not "giving up on him."

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

In my opinion, you go all out on developing him or you give up on him

Many people wanted Callaspo to get the start at SS today. And then many want him pinch hit for in just about any RBI situation. That doesn't develop him. That's a great way to make sure he doesn't get any better. Give this kid a real shot, see what you have in him. Use his excellent defense to help develop young pitchers and then see if you need to make a change in the offseason.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

By that rationale

Are we giving up on Callaspo by not playing him at all?

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

You can't develop everyone at once, and there is a plan for Callaspo

Callaspo doesn't project as a SS by anyone's estimation. He projects as a 2B and there is a plan for him. He'll take over for Grudz.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Should split time

Pena isn't good enough that he warrants playing nine innings of every game. He'll never be good enough to warrant that.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Hillman and Moore don't share your certitude

And neither do I.

And I agree with Moore that one of the key things you need to do to develop young pitchers is surround them with good defense, particularly at the most important defensive positions. That means not putting a subpar defensive SS out there.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

So Callaspo

Should not play there at all?

That's nice that all three of you believe in Pena. Some people believe in Santa Claus. I believe in the numbers.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Sometimes, but minimize his exposure and the negative effect he'd have on the pitchers

You believe in minor league numbers and one season of major league hitting. You're relying too much on them and giving up on Pena too soon. Your certitude is misplaced.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm beginning to think

That numbers only matter to you when its used to support your argument, but can easily be dismissed in favor of hope, scouting and Trey and Dayton's judgment when the numbers are counter to your argument.

I think you write a lot of really smart things, but I think you undercut your credibility a bit by standing so unquestioningly to the side of Dayton and Trey.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

If we had a chance of contending, then I'd definitely play Callaspo

But we don't, we're rebuilding. Do you understand the significance of that? That means you are willing to play some players who might be worse because it would really help the team if you can develop them some. If you think the numbers mean that Pena simply can't hit at the low level which is acceptable for SS's then you are wrong. The numbers certainly don't have that kind of certainty to them. Frankly, he doesn't have to improve greatly to be a sufficient hitting SS with that kind of defense.

I'm not defending Trey and Dayton on this one. I called for this strategy for 2008 from the end of last season even before Hillman was hired. I'd like to see if we have something in him for at least the first half of the season. And I think his defense is very important for developing young pitchers.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand rebuilding

That's why I was against signing guys like Bret Tomko.

But I don't think occasionally hitting for guys like Pena in clutch situations hurts their development. There is no evidence to suggest that. Additionally, Pena will never be a guy you want up there in a clutch situation. The best he can hope to be is Adam Everett - a solid major leaguer, but not a guy you want up there in RBI situations. Guys like that are always hit for late in the game. Nothing wrong with that. They know they're in there for their glove, not their bat.

And if you follow your logic, sitting Callaspo hurts his development. So we should start him over Grudz. But that's silly. Its not either/or. You can split time for guys. Sitting Pena once in awhile or pinch hitting for him doesn't hinder his development. And even if it does, so what? We're not talking about a guy with the abillity to become a Miguel Tejada. At best, he's Adam Everett.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Apr 3, 2008 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Is 6th inning a "late game situation"? I say no

Callaspo isn't a SS, period. From everything I've read, he simply doesn't have it in him. he should play 2B to spell Grudz and then once Grudz is gone. And, quite frankly, Pena needs the development time more than Callaspo.

You're acting like Pena's great SS defense is irrelevant. THAT is why you want/need to develop him as a hitter. Callaspo can't play SS.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 3, 2008 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with nyroyal

but for different reasons. up 3 in the sixth is when you make DEFENSIVE subs, not offensive subs. callaspo improves the likely outcome by 10% tops and the defensive downside is potentially greater. if we're in the lead late, I want pena's defense on the field.

by billexgordler on Apr 3, 2008 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

And the numbers say...

that Callaspo will most likely be a better hitter than Pena. If defense didn't matter the argument would be easy. But it does matter, right? I know shortstops in the modern game are not the offensive black holes they once were...but how much are you willing to give up on the defensive side to get Callaspo in the lineup this year (as opposed to next year or after Grudz is traded)?

by stuckinstl12 on Apr 3, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't either

but you have to be willing to hit for him occasionally.

Although I probably wouldn't have burnt the PH on a 2-out situation either.

by jonfmorse on Apr 3, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

He hasn't got much upside,

but he's a fine stopgap thanks to his defense. I doubt he'll do much with opportunity, but we have nothing to lose by playing him right now.

An interesting question is what we'd do if we were in contention in July...a man can dream, can't he?

Let's see. The Tigers struck out 11 times Monday and got 10 hits in 11 innings; they struck out 8 more times yesterday, with 3 hits.

So for the first 25 innings of the series, the Tigers have 18 hits and have struck out 21 times, too many hits and too many strikeouts to yield a really low BABIP.

by 2X2L on Apr 3, 2008 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Through 3 games, the Royals are allowing hits on balls in play at a percentage of .240, which ranks 7th in MLB, behind Cincinnati, Arizona, San Diego, Boston, Milwaukee, and Seattle. Cincinnati's pitching staff, having allowed only 14 hits in three games against Arizona, has the MLB-lowest BABIP at .158.

On the other side of this exercise in small sample size, the highest team BABIP currently belongs to the Houston pitching staff: .400.

This team's pretty good

I'm not saying they're going to the playoffs or anything, but those of you with low-70's win predictions should feel a little iffy right now (at best).

I probably disagree with you.

I'll Have The

gotta go sue some people . . .

had a lot of fun today fellas.

i'm really excited about this team.

LETS GO ROYALS!!!!!

by royalstern05 on Apr 3, 2008 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure if there is any merit to this

but I think playing good teams early in the season is better for teams like the Royals. I feel like we have a better chance against good hitting teams like the Tigers early on, same with the Red Sox last year. Not sure if there is any data to prove this, but anyway.

Box Score

Doesn't show any K's for Soria, I thought he K'd the first batter of the 9th, no?

So refreshing to not have low moral after the first series.

In other developments, Buddy Bell-managed teams now trail Trey Hillman-managed teams by 104 games in the all-time MLB standings.

I'm already worried

about Greinke's mindset going into his first playoff appearance this fall.

by Royal Revival on Apr 3, 2008 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not

He has stated that he'd rather pitch in the minors for a winning team as opposed to the majors on a losing team. I was really pumped for today considering we had shutout the Tigers the last two games, and that woudl be good for Greinke's mindset... turned out pretty good.

Lest we get too high on Hillman

Remember that Buddy Bell started his Royals managerial career by sweeping the Yankees.

I'm not high on Hillman, I'm high on this team

I'm actually kind of low on Hillman. I don't like all the running, and I think it is going to bite us in the ass. Hilly didn't win us these games. The talent did. Mostly the pitching and some key great hits. That is what will carry us. Hillman, for the most part, will be along for the ride.

I probably disagree with you.

I'm High

On glue, but I like this team a lot so far.

Some one called for Nasty Royals Cheerleader Lady?

Hey Tigers. Nice roster. Just so you know, there is no need to call the cleaning service this weekend. The Royals already swept up Tigers stadium for you. Stupid loser kittens. Get used to it. You don't want to mess with the Royals in 08."

Good lord the Royals are kicking ass.

I should be able to catch a game live finally on Friday.

The Nats and Brewers just lost

Which means the Royals are the last undefeated team in the Major Leagues! Just like 2003 again!
