JDLR to Rockies- it's official

4/30/08 Traded LHP Jorge De La Rosa and cash to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for a player to be named.

I just stumbled upon this one-line  mention of JDLR going to Colorado at http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/transactions/index.jsp?c_id=kc   It must have just gone down.  I didn't see it mentioned at the Royals' site or the KC Star's.

Strange that it wouldn't say anything about this being part of the earlier Ramon Ramirez deal. Could it be a separate trade? I can't imagine it would be...

Not sure Colorado is going to be the place where Jorge puts it all together...he's sort of starting to remind me of Bruce Chen.

Very interesting wording

I find it hard to believe that this was not part of the Ramirez deal. Is it possible that the Rox see what Ramirez is doing and want to possibly work out some better options on the PTBNL for that deal? And in the meantime decided that they wanted JDLR anyway and would be willing to offer somebody of less value than Ramirez?

Interesting

They sure make it sound like it isn’t part of the Ramirez deal. But I’m glad there are now a couple open spots in the Omaha pitching staff now.

I probably disagree with you.

Ramirez

has been a wicked setup man and if indeed the Royals got him for JDLR, they got the best of the deal. It is worded oddly, though. Anyway, I think JDLR would be good in a power reliever role. It sounds like he’ll be the rotation replacement for Morales when he gets to Colorado.

Maybe he'd be an effective reliever

I don’t know if Colorado Springs or Denver is the right place for him to blossom. And I’d much rather have Ramirez. Another great trade for Moore.

I probably disagree with you.

We'll see

I think the AL will eventually catch up to Ramirez. If the scenario that NYRoyal describes below (both sides agree that the PTBNLs are a wash) ends up happening, I do think the Royals will have gotten the better end of the trade, but Ramirez will at least be a lot more consistent for us than JDLR was.

ESPN says this is the completion of the Ramirez deal
De La Rosa was player to be named later in the deal that sent right-hander Ramon Ramirez to the Royals in March. De La Rosa, 27, was 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA at Triple-A Omaha and will be assigned to Colorado Springs.

I probably disagree with you.

Kaegel is a dumbshit..

Ive read on MLBtraderumors.com for a long time that the rockies wanted DLR for the PTBNL in the ramirez deal.. so it has now been completed.

Here ya go right here
Rockies Acquire Jason Grilli, Jorge de la Rosa
The Rockies and Tigers made a swap today. The Rockies get 31 year-old pitcher Jason Grilli, while the Tigers receive 22 year-old pitcher Zach Simons.

Grilli has served as a mop-up man for the Tigers the past two years, eating bullpen innings at a mediocre ERA. The Rox may have been drawn to his typically decent groundball rates.

Simons appears to be a long shot to reach the bigs; he wasn’t among the Rockies’ top 30 prospects.

The Rox also completed their long-rumored deal for lefty Jorge de la Rosa. He’ll jump right into the rotation. The 27 year-old is an interesting arm when healthy.

Wow

How awful is your staff if you want to pick up a Tigers reliever?

I'm guessing Kaegel is right

His source is from the Royals front office. They say there’s no connection between the JDLR trade and the Ramirez trade. But I wouldn’t be surprised if in June the two teams decided that since they both owed each other a PTBNL, they’d just call it even.

I probably disagree with you.

Good swap

Maybe DLR can figure things out or eventually turn into a LOOGY, but I was tired of watching him figure it out, and at 27, he was not likely to improve much. Ramirez has a much higher upside and is already contributing well. Great move Dayton.

I'd be interested to know . . .

How often JDLR tore up AAA pitching like he has this year though? Was his good Omaha stint any sign of any turnaround? Not that it would be likely at this stage of his career. I gotta admit, I’m a little bitter at Wellemeyer – where was his starter stuff when he was in the Royals ‘pen? I could see JDLR turning into something like that conceivably, which wouldn’t hurt much, but would a little.

read it

"They acquired left-hander Jorge de la Rosa and cash to offset his $1 million salary from the Royals on Wednesday afternoon as the player to be named later in the deal that sent right-hander Ramon Ramirez to the Royals in late spring training. The Royals also will receive a player to be determined, who is tied to how de la Rosa pitches with the Rockies.

The Rockies are believed to have received roughly $200,000, which would make up for the difference between what Ramirez and what the Rockies will pay de la Rosa.”

In related news

Bob Dutton reports that the Royals ended up deciding to take cash from the Padres in lieu of the PTBNL who we were to receive for trading everyone’s favorite Aussie, Justin Huber.
