Royals add Hideo Nomo to MLB roster

According to the STAR:

MINNEAPOLIS | Veteran right-hander Hideo Nomo completed his long-shot odyssey to return to the big leagues Saturday morning when the Royals purchased his contract from short-season Idaho Falls.

The club made the move after determining Nomo, 39, was sufficiently recovered from a strained right groin that derailed his roster bid late in spring training.

The roster spot became available after the Royals optioned rookie catcher Matt Tupman to Class AAA Omaha. Tupman became expendable when Miguel Olivo returned from a four-game suspension stemming from an on-field fight last September while a member of the Florida Marlins.

Nomo arrived late Friday and was in uniform for Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome. He will serve as a reliever for the first time his professional career.

The Royals switched Nomo to the bullpen in spring training after other pitchers emerged as better candidates for the rotation. They particularly liked his ability to get strikeouts: 17 in 15 spring innings.

“Has he shown he had major-league abilities?” manager Trey Hillman said. “Yes. He missed bats very effectively. He commanded the fastball. He mixed in a slider, and the split is still there.”

So what do you think of that ?

I thought...

the consensus in spring training was that Hideo was only in town to help Yosh get comfortable, but apparently not. If anything, it will get our boys more airtime on ESPN.

This space intentionally left blank.

from royals.com

"Pitcher Joel Peralta, a late roster cut, cannot be recalled because 10 days have not expired since he was optioned to Omaha."

peralta cant come up for 10 days after his demotion...

it hasnt been 10 days yet, something like 6, so he will have to wait.

so, i am assuming that he will be called up as soon as his 10 days are up...

and who is sent down?

current BP:

Soria
Ramirez
Nunez
Gobble
Mahay
Yabuta
Nomo

something tells me peralta is now injury insurance....

On Peralta

According to MLB rules, a player who is optioned to AAA cannot be called up within ten games of being sent down, so the Royals weren't able to recall Peralta. I don't think Peralta has been reduced to injury insurance, and I would expect to see him back in the bigs by May.

Hah....

Didn't realize two people just addressed this right above me. Shows that I shouldn't be allowed near a blog right after waking up. :)

i would assume that nomo is demoted when we want to call peralta up...

unless nomo sets the world on fire, then peralta might have to wait for another injury.

Snapping to the negative a bit quick again, eh Marbotty?

Wasn't the 10-day thing explained to you the last time you jumped to the conclusion that they were going to let Peralta waste away in the minors?

I probably disagree with you.

Ramirez....

As I watched this man (he's no small guy) work vs. the tigers and the tigers announcers (watching on mlb tv) explained the royals recent addition of him, i wondered...
- why weren't the tigers looking for a guy like this? they obviously need bp help
- would the royals had made this move at the height of their ineptitude? or is this a move that happened b/c the royals front office is now doing their job well with an increased scouting budget?

by kcinstl on Apr 5, 2008 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

very good question re: Tigers

my first guess would be roster space
the tigers just may not have had anyone to drop, although bautista seems obvious...
