BOD: Boyfriend of the Day, April 6, 2008
I'm really sorry this took me so long. I've started reading a really good book series as of late and the author's really good at what she does. So I was in and out of apathetic melancholy all day yesterday. But we did have a win, and you all deserve me to snap out of it to bring you the fourth official BOD of the year!
Boyfriend of the Day

Brett Tomko!
Brett went for 5 innings, only allowing 6 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 1. Maybe not the best outing when you compare it to what other pitchers are capable of, but given that it's Tomko...well, I think he exceeded expectations in this instance. One can only hope that this trend extends past the first few outings of the season.
Smitten Kitten

Alex Gordon!
Alex went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. I really feel as if he and Butler are dominating...and I feel guilty for changing my initial choice of Butler, so I'm going to give him Smitten Kitten status as well.

Honorable Mention

Joakim Soria!
Joakim has been serving the past week. But last night he struck out the 4/5/6 positions. I think he deserves a little love, don't you?

As a final note, I would like to say that I called the record last Monday...we're 4-2. I think we could have easily gone 5-1, but...it just wasn't in our cards, was it? It's funny how we manage to win games that we're not supposed to and we lose games that we really shouldn't.
As for our homestand? I think we'll be 8-4, 9-3? 9-3 would be ace, of course, and I hope that our boys get a good jump start to it. We had the Sunday win, which is always crucial in keeping things from growing weary in the club on travel day. Additionally, they should be coming home to an excited and anxious hometown crowd. Keyword there is should. Who knows how much of a knee jerk reaction KC fans will have this year...

man, what does callaspo have to do to get mentioned?
kid's been great so far.
So what's the book/author?
This space intentionally left blank.
the Twilight series
by Stephenie Meyer. I highly recommend it...especially if you have a thing for vampire books and are a female between the ages of 11 and...oh, basically anything.
Callaspo should try and suck up to me some more if he wants to get mentioned ;D
Not really. I should just pay attention to the game more than I actually do. :[

callaspo's just been a victim of bad luck
he's being outshined by his teammates in individual games, but on the season, he's been one of our best players offensively:
1st in SLG%
3rd in avg.
4 in OBP% (somewhat misleading as he hasn't drawn a walk).
He's also made a couple of nice plays defensively.

Callaspo
He's only played in 3 of the 6 games and only started in 2 of those giving him a total of 9 AB's. He doesn't have to do much to rank high in those categories. Don't get me wrong, I like the kid so far and I look forward to seeing him more often, but I would hold back on issuing him such prestigious honors such as BOD or SK until he proves himself with a larger number of AB's.

9 at bats
Talk about microanalyzing a tiny data sample. As crazy as it is to draw conclusions about this team based on 6 games in 162-game season, it is at least 10 times nuttier to put any weight in 9 at bats.
Guys, right now it is pretty hard for us to hang our hats on any of these stats. So far, there are some really good stats and some really bad ones. But the microanalysis of these stats at this point has really gone off the deep end.
I probably disagree with you.

Will
There's the new banner for RR, "Microanalyzing the smallest sample sizes possible".
I don't mean that in a negative way, I just think it is fitting. That's what overly-obsessed fanatics of baseball do when they finally have real games to watch.

Love that banner suggestion
Even overly-obsessed fanatics (and I am definitely in that group) can take a reasoned, balanced approach at analyzing their team. They can recognize which stats are meaningful and which are not. They can recognize when sample sizes are so small as to be unreliable. They can look at things with perspective and not overreact.
I probably disagree with you.

the point of BOD
is microanalyzing small sample sizes
My point is, Callaspo's done great in the two games he's been in. Jeepers.

I thought it was about how well a player did in a single game
I was reacting to you talking how he is "leading the team" in some statistical categories. It seemed as if you were putting some weight in 9 at bats. It appeared to fit in with the site's current obsession with overanalyzing a small sample of data and drawing conclusions therefrom.
I probably disagree with you.

BOD
is the definitive recognization of a player based on small sample size. I mean, it only takes one decent game for a position player, or one good inning for a pitcher, or... And besides, at this point, all we have are small sample sizes.
Don't Stop Believing!
I'm glad someone's told me what I'm doing now?
Honestly, I'm not trying to micro analyze anything. If a player gets a homerun or an RBI double they're GOING to get some sort of recognition. If a player makes a key defensive play and I happen to be watching the game and catch it for once, they're GOING to get some sort of recognition. I don't look at OBP or SLG or the batting average ever when deciding who gets it. (and yes, I realize that by focusing on hits runs and walks I'm essentially doing that ANYWAYS but that is beside the point) What doesn't help is that this year I'm trying to be more selective. Only one BOD, generally sticking to one SK (though I have fudged a lot and given 2 a few times already), and an HM when it's deserved. So that's cutting down on how many people get a shout out per game. Sorry.
I promise that when Callaspo is the shining star of the game, he will get something. But until then, I will continue to give it to the boys that are doing the most in that particular game in terms of putting runs across the board and putting the ball in play and creating outs on the defense side. Thank you.

sorry if you thought my post was about you
i think you do a fine job of managing BOD and would never suggest otherwise

+1
Yeah, I don't think anyone was seriously criticizing the BOD selections or process (including me). Just some general observations about players and stuff.
I probably disagree with you.
