Game 28 Open Thread - Royals (12-15) at Rangers (10-18)

Kansas City Royals at Texas Rangers, May 1, 2008 2:05 PM EDT

Sidney Ponson will make his second start of the season this afternoon against the Royals, looking to build on a strong performance last week against the Twins.

Wait...

[...]

Sidney Ponson is still in baseball? Yes, yes he is. I must have lost track somewhere after his random time in St. Louis.

Sir Sidney will square off against Zack Greinke (1.25 ERA), as Zack looks to improve on a 3.27 career ERA in Arlington. With a victory on today's getaway day the Royals can begin claiming huge chunks of territory in Oklahoma. We'll start in Tulsa and Enid, and work our way south.

- One pre-game link worth checking out. Mellinger's Q&A with Teahen.

Sir Sidney

4.60 ERA vs. Royals in 19 starts.
5.88 ERA lifetime in Arlington

And he’s fat.

I’d like it except for that. Teahen has the experience to handle the “last man in the foxhole” mentality necessary to bat in front of Buck and Pena. And if Gordon’s the one getting pitches to hit before Butler, he’s more likely to do something really good with them.

However, Teahen’s hit some of his best balls in the last two nights, so maybe at least that is working. Mostly they just have to have Buck and Pena hit a lit bit so the 7th hole isn’t like the 8th spot in the National League.

Not to nitpick

two lefties in a row (Gordon Teahen). Flipping Gordon with Guillen or Butler would to the trick. Especially since at the moment he’s hitting better than either of them.

when we get rewarded for small-ball. It makes them think that sacrificing a runner to second with 1 out is always a good idea. Granted, when it’s Gath at the plate, but still.

Fair enough

I just think that Hillman thinks it’s good strategy. And if a guy’s best play is the bunt, then he sure shouldn’t be at the top of the order (Gathright).

True

I’m sure at this point it doesn’t make that much of a different. Still, it drives me nuts to think of Gathright getting more at bat opportunities than Dejesus, Gordon, Butler, Guillen, Teahen…

I worry too much about

two lefties in a raw, I guess. That’s the problem when you don’t have enough good righties. Too bad we never had a hold on a cheap right-handed outfielder, like, say, Matt Diaz…

by Matt Klaassen on May 1, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Part Of The

Point of this order was to keep DDJ in the 3 hole; he seems to like it there. I’d put Gordon in the 2 hole if it didn’t make 3 LH’s in a row. Also, I can’t see the point of putting Gator in CF and Guillen at DH; with this OF, we’re very good defensively. If Gator has to play, let him DH.

The lack of clutch hitting is remarkable. Even the game they won vs. Rangers they left 12 on base.

by marbotty on May 1, 2008 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Especially when Greinke is pitching, the SS defense plays a lesser role

Zack throws more Ks and more fly balls. Callaspo isn’t so terrible. KC is desperate for hitting of any kind. The bottom third is a black hole for base production

by daveyork on May 1, 2008 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah!

does callaspo’s defense suck that bad?

by AtTheWall on May 1, 2008 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

If Callaspo can help the offense, preventing runs for KC doesn't look like the biggest problem

If you can’t score more than one run off the Ponsons of the world, it doesn’t really matter.

Eh, RBI?

RBI isn’t so much a product of Guillen doing well, its a product of where he hits in the lineup. Of course he leads the team in RBI, he consistently hits cleanup. That puny .220 OBA and his embarrassing .346 SLG are a huge reason why we’re struggling.

I Urge Everyone To Do This

Go to mlb.com gamecast of this game. Click on Field Controls and first choose Away Hits and Outs. Then click off of it and click on Home Hits and Outs.

The disparity is ridiculous. The Rangers have over 5 hits to the track. The Royals? Not one past mid-outfield. Pathetic.

by MKforKC on May 1, 2008 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

Another reason not to like Sidney Ponson: Joe Nathan’s appearance in this game convinced them Giants that he didn’t have the makeup to become a good closer, yet he would never have made that appearance if Ponson had done the job the Giants acquired him to do, which was to be a reliable #2 starter in the playoffs. But Ponson did not get the job done, departing after only 5 innings, and Nathan made an unexpected and very shaky appearance that put him irrevocably in Felipe Alou’s doghouse. Later that year, he was sent to Minnesota to become a Historically Great Closer, becoming a Royals’ nemesis.

Discouragement setting in after listening to that mess.

Games like today’s leave me discouraged about KC’s progress as a team. Yes, I know it is only one game but the symptoms of Royals’ crappiness seem to be lurking again. Another wasted performance by Greinke. Hitters don’t have a clue.

I don’t want to hear Hillman talk about how they battled or the lack of fundamentals – can’t bunt, picked off first. They are big leaguers against Sidney Ponson. The rest of the baseball knows what Ponson can do. How can the Royals be so terrible against someone so terrible. Did they have an inning with more than one base runner? Losing two out of three in Arlington to a team with only 9 wins is awful. Haven’t seen much to make me think the Royals will perk up offensive – singles, can’t use their speed and lack of clutch hitting will continue to be a problem. Could be a long summer of watching crappy pitchers like Ponson and Livan carve up the Royals on less than 100 pitches.

by daveyork on May 1, 2008 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

I'm just worried about the effect it will have on Greinke

This team has sucked ass lately. How long until he gets bored, and decides to start mailing it in? I mean, what’s the point of trying if you pitch your ass off, throw an amazing ballgame, and still get nailed with the L facing Sidney Ponson and the terrible Texas Rangers? It sounds ridiculous, but I’m worried it will get to him. We need him to break out this season so bad.

What really scares me is this feels exactly like last year.

We haven’t improved. That is the worst part. I have yet to see a legitimate Royals-developed hitter with power and plate discipline come up to the big league club in the 2000s. Butler and Gordon are supposed to be those guys, but they have not shown it yet. What I really worry about is that the organization cannot develop hitters. That’s a hard problem to fix, and it leads to games like this.
