Game 40 Open Thread - Tigers (16-24) at Royals (18-21)
Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals, May 15, 2008 2:10 PM EDT
No fancy game thread post today, as I'm totally dead right now thanks to a 7:30 AM final I had to administer this morning.
The Epic (6.31 ERA) looks to lead the Royals to a potentially crushing sweep of the Tigers.
Longtime readers know well enough my thoughts on Kenny Rogers.

First!
Here’s hoping Meche has the curveball working tonight.
I like the order
thought they should have put Butler in the 3 hole sooner
sign Greinke a Evan Longoria type deal now.
I don't like not having Gordon, Dejesus, Grudz.
I want to take advantage of sweeps when the opportunity presents itself.
TPJ can hit the Mendoza Line
with a 4 for 4 effort today…come on Tony!!!!!!!!!!!
You got to know when to hold ‘em
know when to fold ‘em
know when to walk away…
I have many leather bound books...
that'll go nicely
with Billy’s 5 for 5 to get him over .300
sign Greinke a Evan Longoria type deal now.

I would flip Callaspo and Gator, and I’d probably rather see Callie at 3B with Germie at 2B, but whatever.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
callie's the better defender
but perhaps you are suggesting this because germie’s more comfortable at 2B?
The major change I’d make would involve removing Pena altogether, putting Callaspo at ss, and then depending on which of Gordon and DDJ get the start, have either Teahen or Gordon man 3rd.

Germie Has Been

You know, based on the results so far, Meche is like our #4 guy:
#2 – Bannister
#3 – Hochevar
#4 – Meche
#5 – Tomko
And coincidentially, that is the order in which they are pitching. Hmmm . . . maybe Hillman is more savvy than we thought?
Not based on results but..
Isn’t the order in which they pitch:
Meche
Tomko
Bannister
Greinke
Hochevar
?
You might be right - I may have mixed up Banny and Greinke. But the point . . .
is that Meche has not been hitting the other teams’ aces, he’s been up against guys like Rogers. I wonder if that was deliberate on Hillman’s part, which would be pretty savvy, because he would have effectively made Meche a #4 without doing anything overt.
Hillman already said if we were in the playoffs today, Greinke woudl start game 1
winning records follow good bullpens
I think you would need to switch Greinke and Bannister to get the order they are pitching in right now.

Thanks, Mr. Dombrowski, for forgetting everything you knew prior to 2006 and bringing us Gary Sheffield, Edgar Renteria, Miguel Cabrera, and Dontrelle Wiilis. Thanks also for making sure that we locked up Willis and Nate Robertson for the long term… wouldn’t want them to get away. So do we throw Soria out for the 3rd day in a row?
I’mg uessing that would make him unavailable for tomorrow’s game
winning records follow good bullpens
You play for the games you have.
We have no way to tell how the game will turn out tomorrow, so pitch Soria to secure the win today.
But have the others warming up in case he doesn’t have it.
But it's a waste
A 3-run lead in the 9th is a very low leverage situation. No reason to work him 3 days in a row in a needless situation.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on May 15, 2008 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe. I'd be okay with Gobble in there, but I have no trust in Peralta or Yabuta . . .
and everyone else is nearly as worked as Soria. So to me he is the second-best option.
Does Soria come out for the ninth if we don't score in this inning?
I’d say Nunez should come out.

Nunez has pitched 2 games in a row as well

Blown Save
nice to get out of the 8th...
once we get to the 9th, it’s over.
Yeah, let's not waste Soria today
If you don’t need to work him 3 days in a row, then let’s not do it. Let’s give a 3-run lead to Ramirez, or just let Peralta stay in.
I probably disagree with you.
We'll see, I have a feeling Hillman is going to want to lock this win in
He seems like the type of manager that doesn’t give a damn about managing for tomorrow. That is, if he can get a win today, he’s going to throw his closer even if there is a 3 run lead and another game tomorrow that he might not be able to pitch in.
winning records follow good bullpens
He didn't pitch Soria a week ago in a genuinely crucial situation because he didn't want to throw him 3 days in a row
I probably disagree with you.

Is anyone worried about a 3-run lead in the 9th? You shouldn’t be.
I probably disagree with you.
We're Royals fans. "Shouldn't" isn't part of the equation for us (yet).
The worry will always be there.
If you're worried about the back end of this bullpen
there’s something more insidious than mere Royal-fan-hood at work here.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
It's the front end I'm worried about.
Nunez, Ramirez, Soria were all used the last few days. The only fresh guys were Gobble, Peralta and Yabuta, and I only trust Gobble out of the three of them.
And those guys can be trusted with a 3-run lead for one inning
And if things get dicey, you’ve got Soria and Ramirez waiting in the wings
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on May 15, 2008 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I really view Ramirez as sort of the "backup" closer
The guy to still completely trust to use in a situation which isn’t quite as leverage-heavy when Soria could use the day off.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
I really think Ramirez would make good closer
Better than Nunez. I think.

Both Soria and Ramirez warming up
So it looked like Soria would have gotten the call if no run scored. But thankfully he got bailed out and won’t make the mistake. Ramirez it is.
I probably disagree with you.
I think Trey had Soria warming up so he'd be ready if Ramirez melted down.

Man, if this kid is ace material, I sure haven’t seen it thus far. I’ve watched all his starts and his stuff is fairly mediocre. I love seeing Yankees players fail.

I thought he was projected to be more of a #3, given the fact that he has mediocre stuff
Of course, he’s not even looking that good or anywhere close to it. Hughes is supposed to be the future ace. And he’s a train wreck too.
