Up North in Omaha
So, I'm not too keen on the Shane Costa calls (sorry RR), but Mitch Maier could be interesting. He's played in 19 games and he's putting up some decent numbers. If he keeps it up, he may work himself onto the big club. That would only work if you were to go with 11 pitchers because who else would you be able to dump there? It wouldn't be a bad idea to send Yabuta down to adjust to American baseball, but if you wanted to stick with 12 pitchers, there really isn't anybody with impressive stats pitching in Omaha. Roman Colon has a 0.00 ERA in 3 games, but that's hardly enough to gauge. Tyler Lumsden is looking like a bust BTW. Maybe sticking with the current roster isn't that bad after all. I mean, we have won 5 in a row. Anyway, I was thinking about Ryan Braun. I think the guy could eventually be a serviceable reliever, but I was wondering where he is. Does anybody have any info on him? He must be hurt, but what's the injury?

wouldn't mind maier
good defensive OF with great speed. has hit for average in the past. not a bad 5th OF. I would probably keep roster as is and maier would be my first position player in after one of the mid IFers gets traded.

For some reason I dont like Maier
also I hate Ryan Braun.. he was last years Yasuhiko Yabuta
Yasuhiko Yabuta is to Major League Baseball as Drew Carey is to The Price is Right

I was told on this site a week ago that Ryan Braun is out for the season with an injury
I probably disagree with you.

That really sucks
I like Braun and think he’s worthy of another tour in the majors. I hope it wasn’t Tommy John.

From Dick Kaegel...
Braun, a hard-throwing reliever, underwent reconstructive elbow surgery last week and is out for the season. In the previous two seasons, he appeared in 35 games for the Royals with a 6.66 ERA and 2-1 record. He was cut this spring and was assigned to Omaha, but never pitched before undergoing surgery.

I still want to give Ryan Shealy a last chance in the majors before the Royals cut him loose
I probably disagree with you.

expect it to happen post-Gload trade
by royalsreview on May 17, 2008 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know that we should expect that
Putting aside the issue of whether a Gload trade would be a good idea, I think the 2-year $3.2M contract says that Moore wants Gload on the team. And I don’t think he’s going to get any offers that will really knock his socks off.
I probably disagree with you.

We don't have a lot of 1B/DH options in house
I’d like to give him a shot. He certainly has a better minor league track record (and major league for that matter) than Mike Aviles.
I probably disagree with you.

Me too
But I can’t see them carrying both Shealy and Gload. I wonder if the two year deal they gave Rossy-pants means Shealy’s days are done.

We sure do have some
good lines being put up by our fifth outfielder candidates in Omaha…it’s hard to believe that Costa or Maier wouldn’t outhit Gator. Still, it’s academic. Maier could be peaking, and still all he would be is another AAAA/fifth outfielder who isn’t worth starting.
Of course, the annoying thing is that’s exactly how Mark Teahen is hitting right now.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

Gator is a better option
DeJesus, Teahan and Guillen have limited range and Gator brings more to the table than Costa or Maier do. Costa isn’t gonna be a 20-30 HR guy neither is Maier. Why bring them up if they can’t do that? Slow your outfield down further? Costa has had his chances at least Joey has plus speed and can be a asset in the field or on the basepaths (Rusty has done wonders this year with him). He can have a bigger upside with his improving eye and give pitchers fits when he gets on. His improved discipline at the plate and defensive play is one of the reasons for this mini-streak. He has scored 3 runs and drove in 4 during the ministreak as well as made multiple catches in the outfield that none of the other 5 Of’s could get to. Gator will develop nicely under this coaching staff. Will he be a .400+ OBP guy probably not but will the other guys. DOUBT IT

For what it's worth
Gathright, both last year and this year, had a significantly lower Revised Zone Rating in center than did DeJesus.
So much for his vaunted defensive advantages… Oh yeah, I forgot about his bat.
Hope is not a strategy. And neither is playing Tony Pena every day. (Rany Jazayerli)

PS
Although the sample sizes for both are too small, last year Teahen also had a higher RZR in center than Gathright.

But he can jump over a car!
Put that in your spreadsheet and smoke it!

Revised Zone Rating
Those ratings are from a small sample size for Gathright. No one can tell me DeJesus has more range than Gathright. I’ve watched DeJesus over the last couple years and he gets to less and less balls.

I think DJ is really underrated
He gets great jumps on flyballs. Gathright seems to get poor jumps.

Mitch Maier
If he’s lucky can be a 5th OF someday. Costa is much better, he could be a 4th OF for a MLB club someday. I don’t see either as impact players.
