Game 43 Open Thread - Royals (20-22) at Marlins (24-18)
Kansas City Royals at Florida Marlins, May 18, 2008 1:10 PM EDT
It all comes down to today, with the Memory of Scott Pose on the line.
The Royals send Zack Greinke (1.93 ERA) to the mound, while the Marlins counter with Burke Badenhop (5.97 ERA). Badenhop is an Atlanta boy, and I firmly expect him to be in the Royal organization by the end of the decade.

Do you still think the Royals won’t make it back to .500 this year?
I probably disagree with you.

well
I’ve declared that so many times, and they essentially proved me wrong by getting so close
but i’ll stick to no.. they wont make it back

Id like to think they will
but its hard to when they got boston coming back… im thinking we will win today then maybe beat lester. but he has been lights out for most the year

Even if we don't make it back to .500 in the coming week, it's a long season and there's plenty of time to get on more winning streaks
...and losing streaks. But I still think this is a about an 80-win team, so I think they’ll spend some more time over .500
I probably disagree with you.

Lester has not been
lights out. Take it from someone who has seen every start of his. He’s very up and down.

fair enough
whatever i do, they’ll take notice
last night was a huge opportunity any way you slice it (cliche alert)
they got the nice winning streak you need, but couldn’t close the deal… the royals are a better team than the Marlins, i have no doubt about that in my mind

OK, Here Is
My $.02.
Apparently Hillman got his experimentation out of the way yesterday. For a getaway lineup, this is virtually status quo. We should beat this Badenhop character like a red-headed mule.

Gator sits, Teahie is back, and TPJ patrols the left side once more. I really would like to see Callaspo at 2B against RHP’s most of the time. It will be hard to sit Olivo when Buck returns. Olivo so far this year:
G AB R H 2B 3B HRRBI SB AVG OBP SLG
22 76 10 21 7 0 5 13 1 0 4 19 .276 .313 .566
An .879 OPS from a backstop works about anywhere. I know, small sample size and all, but on an offensively challenged team like this, it’s hard to ignore.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

They need to keep playing Olivo against LHP
That’s where he has done his most damage and where he is likely to continue to do damage.

We’re talking Callaspo, right?
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on May 18, 2008 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, Callaspo
Callaspo is certainly not a proven hitter. But German definitely hasn’t proven himself to be a good hitter. He’s ok. Pretty good OBP and that’s it. And he’s a well below average fielder. On top of that, he’s in his 30’s, whereas Callaspo is a younger guy with a good future. So yes, I think Callaspo is an upgrade.
I probably disagree with you.
by NYRoyal on May 18, 2008 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd add that German has
acceptable power for a middle infielder, but the thing is what I’m really not sure about is that Grudzielanek at second and Callaspo as utility is better than Callaspo at second and German subbing.
I think like this recent hot streak of Grudzielanek’s has raised his trade value…and that we’ll throw out German too, being left with Pena and Callaspo again.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on May 18, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Grudz has done nothing but hit very well for a 2B for the last 5 years
I’ll believe that German or Callaspo might be better overall when Grudz finally starts slowing down. I haven’t seen it for 5 years.
I probably disagree with you.
by NYRoyal on May 18, 2008 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Secondary skills
I’m looking at the fact that I don’t think grudz will hit .330, and when that comes down to, say, .300 he’s no longer even average. his defense is in decline as well. Anyway, I guess my real hope here is that the Royals deal him, because I think Callaspo can handle the job.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on May 18, 2008 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hope they trade Grudz before the deadline
But until then, he’s the best 2B on the team. Best defense and at least as good offensively as Callaspo or German this season.
I probably disagree with you.
by NYRoyal on May 18, 2008 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
His defense is no longer that big
of an advantage, but I’m forced to agree he’s played the best since he’s hitting .331. I’m just saying that going forward, Callaspo-German is a good bet to outproduce Grudzielanek-Callaspo, and any of these guys could outhit Pena. Moore should make sure he gets rid of the right guy here.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on May 18, 2008 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Grudz-Callaspo is better than Callaspo-German for any and all of 2008
And I’m happy with him trading both Grudz and German if he gets decent offers.
I probably disagree with you.
by NYRoyal on May 18, 2008 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Respectfully disagree
based on the fact that I’d rather see the younger play get the PT, but i do see what you’re saying.
And the thing is, what with German’s limited PT there’s very little chance of a good trade offer.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on May 18, 2008 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that younger player is going to get a lot of PT at SS
And then after Grudz is traded, he can go back to 2B, where he will be for the next several years.
I probably disagree with you.
by NYRoyal on May 18, 2008 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Despite how people
are wishy-washy on Callaspo’s defense at short? i hope you’re right. The reality is that over short term, we really couldn’t lose too much value from Callaspo’s shortstop defense. Hopefully that’s the way it goes down.
and hopefuly Moustakas can still play short.

He's a useful utility IFer
And if he were an average fielder, he’d make a good starting 2B. But the Royals have a good, younger, cheaper utility IFer with a future right now who will be the next starting 2B. German is fairly talented surplusage.
