Milton Bradley

Tim over at MLBTR suggested during the chat today that KC could be a possible destination if the Rangers decide to move him. Any thoughts on the idea of getting the guy we just missed last year? What would we give up? I'm guessing Nunez is no longer going to be the offer.

Bradley's bat would be nice, but I would rather try to figure out our SS solution. Besides that where would Bradley play on the field. A move or two would have to be made to compensate I would think.

THOUGHTS?

good...BUT

i like the idea of having milton bradley on our team, and it may have worked better last year. nunez is not available anymore, and i am still holding out hope that we try him again as a starter. he has succeeded in a limited role there so far in his career. the main reservations i have about a bradley trade are that we would be benching either dejesus or teahen. both are good players, but neither seems to be the solution to any of our problems. that said, i don’t think bradley is either, and trading one good player for an equivalent player makes very little sense. also, bradley is a known attitude problem. seems to me we already got our bad attitude guy w/ the signing of jose guillen this past offseason. if we add bradley we may be playing with fire, something this franchise cannot afford to do with all the young and developing talent.

Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.

Yeah...

if we’re going after a trouble player I’d just asoon it be Bonds. We could always use a bat though so if it happened I would at least be interested.

My problem with Milton Bradley

Over the last 3 years, he’s averaged 77 games played and 281 AB’s per season. That’s less than half a season of playing time due to injuries (and, to a lesser extent, suspensions). He has a Mike Sweeney-like ability to get injured, re-injured and perma-injured. How much is a half-time starter worth?

And, he’s on a one-year contract. The Royals shouldn’t be trading anyone this year for a rental. We’re not going to be in a stretch run, so we shouldn’t act like a team in a stretch run. If we want Bradley, then we should bid for him in the offseason. But, again, I don’t know how much I’d bid for a player who isn’t likely to play more than a half season.

I probably disagree with you.

agree

unless its july and we are still 2.5 games back… pass

if we are

2.5 back at deadline…who do we have to give up?

by eboston on May 20, 2008 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

seriously

detroit and cleveland will stop sucking right? they make people think we have a chance this year. if you had to say right now, what are the chances we are within 3 games of the playoffs at the deadline? 10%? 25%?

by ZeppelinDZ on May 20, 2008 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

At least one of them will stop stucking

Detroit has dug itself a hole, but Cleveland is well positioned. I could see them at 1-2 in the division by July.

As for your question, it’s really hard for me to come up with a number that I’m at all confident in. I’d say 15-20% but I couldn’t defend that number. But here’s the problem. Let’s say we’re 3 games out at the deadline and a game or two over .500. What are the odds that an addition of someone like Bradley (a good but not great player) would get us into the playoffs. I would still think that the Cleveland or Detroit would pull away in the last two months, and then the Royals would have one or two fewer prospects.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on May 20, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Who would

get us into the playoffs if we are hanging around at the deadline? Of players that would most likely be available and that we have the chips to make a deal for.
Holliday and Bay are the two guys that come to mind. Don’t think we have what it would take to get Holliday, but Bay could be a possibility,

by eboston on May 20, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think that any one player would do it

I read an estimate on BP before the season started that Bonds would likely add 6 wins to a team. I don’t think Holliday adds more than 7. If added at the deadline, that means 2 or 3 more wins. I still think this is an 80-win team. So getting us up to 82-83 wouldn’t put us in contention.

I probably disagree with you.

No matter how good Bradley is

The week after the Royals trade for him, an anvil will fall on his head.

Or maybe not. It might be a piano.

I actually think

You and I probably agree more on those issues than on baseball

by RoyalsRetro on May 20, 2008 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, we agree a lot on baseball too

I tend to be more interested in talking about things where I disagree with someone than when I agree. When I agree, pretty much all I can say is “I agree” or “+1” and/or perhaps add a few things. But when I disagree, there’s much more to be said. So our disagreements are more visible and the many things on which we agree kind of hide in the weeds.

I probably disagree with you.

If NYRoyal and Retro could sing and dance

We’d have a mean sequel to West Side Story on our hands.

It's interesting

I’ve heard that kind of thing said about NHZ and me, and James Quinn (JQ) and me, and Gopherballs and me. When you disagree with people as frequently and vociferously as I do, you end up with many “people you disagree with the most.”

I probably disagree with you.

Do we want Bradley and Guillen in the same

lockerroom. Both are know hot heads, do we want them in the same room with a first year manager? Doesn’t sound like a good combo to me.

sign Greinke a Evan Longoria type deal now.

Who knows....

Maybe they would end up being the best of friends, feeding off of each other’s energy

Maybe their anger will cancel each other out

Or maybe it will piss them off so much they’ll perform even better. Someone needs to come up with a metric that can quantify the amount of “cancer” some players bring to “team chemistry.”

You guys are forgetting something very important

The God Squad (Moore, Hillman and Bannister) would convert them both to evangelical Christianity, thus calming their dispositions and making them good clubhouse guys. Clearly they are already working their magic on Guillen.

I probably disagree with you.

Seriously...

If we wanted him, we could have shown him 6 million bucks last December and he’d be here right now.

and seriously

All that MLBTR guy is doing is speculating. He doesn’t know crap, he is not an expert. He reports information he finds on the internet and tries to act like he knows a lot more than he really does. Nothing against the guy, but that is just the truth of the matter.

We should've signed him in the offseason

He would’ve been cheap enough to sign even after the Guillen deal. He would be a nice DH with Boom Boom at first, but I’m not wanting to give up much for him. Toss Tyler Lumsden at them.

Who wouldn't?

Lumsden is horrible.

yep

we’re still in this thing, too—too bad we also passed on Frank Thomas, who we would have had for league minimum.

i’d still like us to make a run at Bonds—his price tag has to be at its nadir.

This space intentionally left blank.

by marbotty on May 21, 2008 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Probably not

If it happens, then I imagine Teahen will move to 1B and Gload would go back to the bench where he belongs. In that sense, I would like it, and it would be an upgrade.

Most likely, the Royals would have to give up something of value. Unless that means a couple of players I don’t expect to succeed in the majors, it isn’t worth doing.

On the flipside, if Bradley was aquired, stayed healthy, and had a decent year, the Royals would be rewarded with a supplemental draft pick when he left for FA.

So I’m in favor of this as long as the Royals don’t give up anything much.

by Stat Ninja on May 21, 2008 1:33 AM EDT reply actions

probably two picks actually...

I think he was a type A last year. Problem is, the Rangers know that too and wouldn’t let him go for cheap.

I really dislike

the idea of the Royals going after Bradley. I just can’t wrap my mind around what exactly would be good about it at this point.

-It would a half-year rental in a year where we’re probably not contending
-The Rangers would have all the leverage to sell high
-Bradley is made out of Glass

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

by NHZ on May 21, 2008 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Might as well go after Milton Bradley, Carl Everett, and bring Shea Hillenbrand out of retirement… Bradley would do nothing for this team. Nearly 3/4 of Bradley’s rbi’s (almost exactly) are driving in Young and Hamilton, neither of which the royals have… Bad attitude seeming normal because he loves the coach… Hillman would ride him all day long. I like the guy but wrong direction with this team. I think Bay is a much more logical possibility.
