Game 47 Open Thread - Royals (21-25) at Red Sox (30-19)
Kansas City Royals at Boston Red Sox, May 22, 2008 1:35 PM EDT
Fortunately, it's a daytime start for Brian Bannister (4.29 ERA). Unfortunately, he has to face the Red Sox.

On an another note, I am saddened at Guillen being selfish once again and hogging that RBI all to himself.

Not to bag on any player in particular
but one problem I see with our “offense” is some HUGE platoon splits (yes, I know, sample caveats aside).
Take a look at Gordon and Teahen vs lefties, then
take a look at Butler and Gullen vs righties, then
you will know why we have virtually no comebacks in the late innings. If the opposition has any kind of bullpen, and their manager is not imitating Bernie in “Weekend at Bernie’s”, then it’s “game over” for the Royals if they aren’t at least tied after 5 innings, IMHO.
Sad part of what I just typed: Those constitute the everyday 3-4-5-6 hitters in our lineup!

Honestly, with the way Banny labored thru 5 innings, and the bullpen in fairly good shape, and considering we would need only 3 innings from them today, since we are going to lose, why would you send him out there in the 6th? What’s the point? Makes no sense from a cost/benefit standpoint.

The bullpen should REMAIN rested for tomorrow now – it should be Yabuta time for the last 2 innings.
Leaves Banny in 1 inning too long, that saves the bullpen exactly 1 out, then goes to pen, and with Manny, Lowell, and Youkalis the next 3, with the team sorta still in the game, you can’t go to a righty there? Has Hillman seen Gobbles splits????
What makes that all the dumber is a righty will be coming in to finish this game for us anyway – so why not for ONE ADDITIONAL OUT???

I think this series is going to hurt more than just a 4 game losing streak.
I feel like the way they got beaten up and demoralized in every concievable variety of ways
a) no hit by ahem Jon Lester
b) a close game they loaded the bases en route to a comeback and still lost because they couldn’t get a guy home from 3rd with 1 out
c) got beaten by William the Refrigerator Perry on his first start back
d) got blown out to seal the series
that we are going to go on a bit of a prolonged slide here. I’m guessing probably 7 – 13 over the next twenty games. I hope I’m wrong but I think this has a lasting impact not the least of which is we won’t sniff .500 again until next season.
Be that as it may, I’m hoping this can be chalked up to a learning experience.

My YY comment
was used to set up this plan:
Move Soria to the rotation
Move Tomko to the bullpen (long relief)
Either Ramirez or Nunez (or sometimes Mahay) closes
Yabuta assumes role of setup to the setup guy
Considering the lack of run support, this may be the only true way for this team to reach 500 this year
(And, yes, NYRoyal, I do think playing 500 this year is THAT important – mainly to my chances of selling more peanuts in the damn recession-going-on-depression we’re in)

Here's something I noticed
The Sox use a good hitter for 8 innings, THEN replace him with a defensive substitute late.
What a concept!
And this from a team that could seemingly carry an all-defense-no-hit type in their lineup.

What I was hoping for
was a walk, so that Guillen could come up and strike out.
Then everyone could forget how he was the entire offense for 2/3 of the game and bitch about him some more.

Suicide squeeze
that would have been the right play. If Gordon couldn’t get back ‘round to home, it’s his own, entitled, 1st round pick fault

WE NEVER GAVE UP!
We had tremendous fight and tenacity. That will give us momentum going into Toronto. Today they just wanted it more. Its a moral victory, and a good test of character for a young team like this….yadda….yadda…..

We just have to work more on the fundamentals.
Moving the runners and being aggressive. You can’t expect your guys to go out and hit half a dozen doubles and a couple of homers, you know.

Didn't execute
We walked too much early in the game against Dice-K. You have to be aggressive in those situations and drive in runners. You can’t wait back and expect him to make mistakes. He’s 7-0…he knows how to win.

From the Irony Department:
In two games this series, our two best young hitters came up with men in scoring position and a chance to take the lead or tie the game late, and both fell flat. Symbolically, it can’t get much worse than that.

Once more: SHIP OUT GORDON NOW
Here’s how spoiled he is: he scored three runs today, but only got ONE hit. Lazy, lazy, lazy. Some guys need to look in the mirror, then look at the guys who didn’t just get it all handed to them on a plate: TPJ, Gload, that other guy…

Bigger question: Are any of you revising your opinion of Banny?
Really, I think the last month or so has shown he’s more of a #4/#5 guy than a #3. I hope Meche keeps pitching like he has recently. Then I think the rotation should fall out:
1 – Greinke
2 – Meche
3 – Hochevar
4 – Banny
5 – Tomko
That’s not great, but it may be more realistic.
by Eppenweb on May 22, 2008 5:07 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I still like him
but I think I said a few weeks back that I think he’s a rich man’s Josh Towers. #4 pitcher is his upside. I’d happily be proven wrong, though.

The Royals signed him to a massive contract, and he immediately turned into Hideo Nomo circa 2008.

All my stuff about Soria as a starter, etc. is now reversed. Time to Lexus-Nexus “George Brett” +“pitching strategy”

RR has suggested this before,
but a bold move would be Meche for a starting position player – either shortstop or first basemen.
Perhaps he could bring an existing starting position player + a decent prospect as well.
Remember, if he pitches like last year again, that contract makes him VERY attractive to virtually ANY team.
(This would go along beautifully with my move Soria to the rotation campaign)
