Make or Break?

So where do we go next? A salvageable season is still in the cards with no one in the central stepping up to the plate. The good guys have 9 straight against Central opponents and these games could really make or break how they play till the all-star break. If they lose 6 out of 9 and are 9+ games out of first (and last place) how do you play the next couple months, trade-wise, call-ups, or other moves? We already know we cant hit and our pitching staff can't carry a .250 average forever... But if we hit another random streak and go 6 and 3 or better and move within 2 games or so do we ride it out? Can we?

There are a lot of strong opinions on this site and that's why I love it. NYRoyal and I have had our battles and so have Retro and others. But the fact that we can come together in our seemingly hopeless-at-times rooting for our fav team makes it so much better. Lets keep the fire going for the boys in blue and pray for the best!

The coming months

It seems hard to believe that in the coming weeks, at least one team ahead of the Royals (particularly Cleveland) won’t put a run together and put to rest our hopes and dreams of a contending season this year. Who knows, crazier things have happened, but realistically we will not be contending (of course, we weren’t expected to, either).

So, assuming that contending for the division becomes out of reach in a month or so, Dayton Moore needs to do his best to cash in any chips he has and do what he can to improve the team for next year and beyond. He had the right idea last year, moving Dotel (although one could argue about the return he got in that trade). However, there appears to be no one on the roster this season who could generate the interest level (and return) that Dotel did last season after pitching well out of the KC bullpen.

This year, I would imagine that Grudz may go, along with at least one reliever (Gobble?) and potentially a guy like Tomko, depending on how well he pitches in the coming weeks. Other than that, the only other candidates to be traded would seem to be Gload, German and perhaps a catcher (likely Olivo). Let’s face it, though; none of these would bring anything significant in return (maybe a marginal prospect).

A wild card would be someone like DeJesus, who if made available, obviously could bring more in return than any of the others I mentioned. Whether trading him would be the right thing to do is another story (I would argue it isn’t, especially if you’re going to tell me that you’d replace him as the everyday CF with Gathright).

Moore, with little to deal from the big league roster, may have to look into dealing one or more of what he considers his second-tier prospects (like he did in dealing Buckner for Callaspo) in the right deal.

there's still hope for Dayton

but he needs to aggressively pursue a top player over the off-season, change his entire draft strategy with regard to hitters, and learn to value power and patience over defense and speed.

So, just 3 things…

Still lots of baseball left to be played

What’s clear is that this team is inconsistent. They’ll win five in a row, and lose seven in a row. Its clear we need some offense, but its very difficult to do much about that mid-season. Much easier to address in the winter.

I’d much rather have not enough hitting than not enough pitching.
