Why doesn't Costa get a chance?

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Shane%20Costa&pos=OF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=430573

Shane Costa is hitting .304/.348/.527 with 9 HRs in AAA, our offense

Our offense is: Last in runs, last in HR, 2nd to last in Slg(Nationals slug worse), that's 3 things that Costa could potentially improve over somebody like Gathright or Gload. Now we probably should keep Gathright because of his speed and as a backup OF. Gload on the other hand, isn't that great of a bat for 1B or corner OF at his best and is putrid this year. Butler has yet to make an error at 1B this year, now watching him play, he's not ever going to be an all star defender at first, but as long is he's not absolutely horrible(think Frank Thomas, Dimitri Young or David Ortiz) his bat should(I hope) more than make up for his range at first.

What do you guys think?

Because baseball is a wierd capricious game

where guys get one quick look and get pidgeonholed or locked in to a certain belief about them and their abilities and don’t get an actual extended look.

And besides, we’re waiting on Teahen’s power, Gathright to actually utilize his speed, Pena to develop and flourish into a capable regular, Gload to demand more grit out of the team, and on and on and on.

Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

couldn't agree more

but still, just saying, he deserves a chance to be a backup, he has pretty good fundamentals

oh i think he should get shot at some point

its not like we are running out a MLB quality offense at this point

I think

He’s a AAAA player who would put up Ross Gload-type numbers. He doesn’t do anything particularly well. Doesn’t hit for power, doesn’t draw walks, doesn’t steal bases, doesn’t play great defense. Not sure what he really brings to the table. Ideally, he’d be a good pinch hitter in the NL. Wouldn’t add much for us to be honest.

+1

To everyone who thinks that calling up Costa is a good idea—keep in mind that his career OBP through parts of three big-league seasons is a TPJ-esque .289, and his slugging isn’t much better. He is basically organizational filler at this point.

disagree

His career OPS is higher than TPJ’s best years(not saying much) and to say it’s too late for him to turn it around, he’s younger than Gathright, who still gets all kind of chances because of his “potential”

So, because Gator is on the team, that necessarily justifies giving Costa another shot?

That has absolutely no basis in fact.

First, Costa’s and Gathright’s career OPS+’s are exactly the same. What Gathright lacked in slugging in 2007, he made up for in OBP. Costa is mediocre in both departments, at least Gathright has the potential to do one well. There are also legitimate reasons to believe in Gathright’s potential in some departments, such as baserunning (he has just developed into the one true basestealing threat we have), plus, he is the better defensive outfielder. On the other hand, Costa has shown no capacity to break through at the MLB level in three years in any particularly useful offensive skill. He is what he is.

Costa talk needs to end

When Costa gets called up and starts blowing like he always has. We’ll get a bunch of people on here saying that we should call up Damon Hollins b/c of his great Spring Training numbers.

I’m very curious how long some people around here have been watching the Royals. I’m not trying to be disrespectful or an A-hole. I’m just curious. I don’t remember a time when the Royals really competed (save 2003, so that doesn’t really count) because I was born the year we won the WS. It’s been 23 years since we made the playoffs so why are we naive enough to think that this thing can be turned around by calling up a AAAA OF or releasing a terrible 9-hole SS?

part of it is a roster crunch

Gathright is out of options. So the Royals would have to basically risk losing him to bring up Costa.

But I still agree. Costa Now!

Costa is not the answer

Plain and simple. I would be surprised if he hit better than Ross Gload, honeslty.

Yep

The dude is a AAAA player. Nothing more, nothing less.
