I speak

Well, I've remained largely silent since the inception of the new site here, but I can't take it anymore.

I advocated signing Bonds - now you all know why.

I advocated moving Soria to the rotation - now you all know why.

I advocated giving Callaspo a shot at shortstop - now you all know why.

Seriously, this offense is SO BAD, this team may very well revert back to the 100 loss days, despite what appears to be very real progess in the starting pitching front. Unbelievalbe.

What to do, other than say "wait til next year", or "it's OK, it's a developmental year"?

Well, here's an idea or two:

Trade some of the excess pitching to solve the SS and DH holes.

Trade one of the two catchers to solve the SS and DH holes.

Trade one of the THREE viable 2B to solve the SS and DH holes.

I have been a GMDM supporter, but this last off-season has me wondering. Two of the three major acquisitions (Olivo and Callaspo) essentially duplicated assests we already had, while obvious problem areas (SS, DH, 1B) went unaddressed. How does this make sense? Backup catcher and utility IF should be the acquistions of a team on the cusp of contending, not a team in obvious building mode.

TPJ has been so bad, 810 actually held a serious debate this morning about the merits of recalling Berroa to replace him, AND I SORTA SEE THEIR POINT!

Here is another Pena vs NL pitchers update:

TPJ: 162/184/204

NL Pitchers: 144/184/180

So essentially we run out a NL lineup, while our AL opponents get an extra productive bat, every game. Think about it that way, and it's kinda amazing we have won 40% of our games.

Trades

The fact DM hasn’t made a trade yet I think is because teams aren’t generally looking to trade by May. These are holes that will have to be addressed closer to the trade deadline.

Plus

are teams really gonna trade for Olivo, Teahan or DeJesus. Don’t most teams have those types on their AAA rosters

sign Greinke a Evan Longoria type deal now.

Transaction duplications

Don’t forget the signing of Mahay, even though we already had Bale and Gobble. Shouldn’t have been a top priority given our other needs.

Wow, that poll needs an “all of the above” option…

by cookierojas73 on May 27, 2008 12:14 PM EDT   0 recs

Shouldn't have been a priority?

Our bullpen from last year had lost two of its three most dominant pitchers (Riske and Dotel), and in order to continue having a strong pitching staff, replacing them had to be a priority. There is also no way Bale and Gobble could do what Mahay has done—Mahay is a substantially better pitcher than either Bale or Gobble, and they also all have completely different roles. Just because a pitcher is left-handed doesn’t mean that the only role they are good for is being a LOOGY. That is like saying the Mets shouldn’t have any other left-handed arms in the ‘pen because they have Billy Wagner. C’mon.

Let’s also look at where the Royals bullpen was when we made the Mahay signing—we hadn’t traded for Ramirez, and while Yabuta was seen as very talented, he didn’t have any MLB experience. With Soria taking Dotel’s closer job, the only pitcher we could really tab for setup work was Leo Nunez. I’m a big fan of Nunez, but we needed more than him to replace the three-headed monster of Dotel, Riske, and Soria that we had last season.

Furthermore, that implies that we could’ve addressed our other needs through the FA market last year when that was patently not the case. The market for FA shortstops was abysmal, and it wasn’t as though GMDM didn’t go after power bats—he did, but some of the signings (like Hunter to the Angels) took everyone by surprise.

Signing Mahay made a lot of sense, and it was a good signing on GMDM’s part. Mahay has, with a couple rare exceptions, been excellent in relief for us this year.

to everything, especially the FA market of last year.

Agreed

Not sure how anyone can criticize the Mahay deal right now. Every MLB team is dying for bullpen depth. We seem to have it.

Let's also not forget

the R. Ramirez for De La Rosa. De La Rosa is really struggling with the Rockies (big surprise). The fact that we got anything for him was amazing.

Mahay helps the team

And you make some valid points, especially re. the lack of decent available free agents in the past offseason. But I still don’t see the great need for Mahay on this team, as solid as he’s been, for a number or reasons. To me, his signing is akin to Octavio Dotel’s in some ways. It helps us primarily in that it gives us quality bullpen depth, but it will benefit us most if we can later package him or another reliever in another deal to improve the team in other areas of need.

The way I look at it is, we had a poor team last year with a very good bullpen. This year, you could say the same. Keeping the bullpen solid for this year was certainly a worthy goal, but spending $4 million/year on a veteran reliever like Mahay to get a slight upgrade in the pen was a bit of a head-scratcher for me, and still is, given how our team needs improvement in virtually every other area. I’d like to see Moore move Mahay for a decent bat in the coming months.

by cookierojas73 on May 27, 2008 1:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

4 million

really isn’t that much these days. I wouldn’t be against moving Mahay but only if it were for a pretty good prospect. We have him next year too where he could potentially be very valuable.

by I need more Esteban on May 27, 2008 2:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sure, the Mahay signing wasn't a blockbuster by any means

But unless GMDM was going to beat the odds and sign someone like Torii Hunter, that blockbuster signing wasn’t going to happen (I do remain guardedly optimistic about our new 12-million-dollar man).

Like, what was GMDM going to do with an extra $3.5 mil a year? That wouldn’t have been enough to sign Hunter, and in hindsight, throwing that money at someone like Andruw Jones would’ve been a colossal mistake. Instead, Moore selected a solid bullpen veteran to replace the production and presence of Dotel and Riske, which seems like a wiser investment. I think I said at one point during the offseason that I’d rather have Mahay, Yabuta, and Guillen rather than just Andruw Jones. I still maintain that.

As for the need for Mahay, the guy has been, for the most part, absolute money for us in any situation we throw him into. Eventually, the league will catch up to Ramirez and Nunez, at which point we will be very very glad to have Mahay to setup Soria when need be.

You seem to be asking

to just blow everything up and make as many moves as we can., even if they don’t make sense. It’s still pretty early. If this team loses a 100 games I will be shocked. Yes it really isn’t fun to have to say, “Wait till next year” and everything. But how many games did you think this team would win? 80 at most? It’s a losing streak, it sucks, but we are not there yet. A team like this does not build a contender through free agency. You fill holes with free agency. A team like this builds through the draft and then possibly trading young prospects. We can’t trade until we’ve had a few good drafts to obtain good prospects.

I think everyone agrees the cupboard was bare for DM. He is trying to fill it and it takes some time.

by I need more Esteban on May 27, 2008 12:18 PM EDT   0 recs

A fresh breath of reason

When you’re in a losing streak it doesn’t seem like you’ll ever win again, and when you’re in a winning streak, you think the team is invinceable.

For the same reasons as Retro.

by DarthYoshi on May 27, 2008 12:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

80 is about right

but what is more troubling is not that they are on pace to win 67 – it’s the sheer lack of development from ANY of the position players, save Gordon. That has to be troubling, and if it is true, then the franchise is nowhere near as ready to breakthrough as we all thought. 2009? 2010? Well, if Buter and Teahen don’t develop, then we are going to miss our window of opportunity afforded us by the pitching development, and this crazy cycle of trying to get both sides of the game to peak at roughly the same time will start all over again. I’m 48, and now I’m starting to wonder for the first time if they will ever make the playoffs in my lifetime again. That’s sad.

I’m not advocating “blowing the whole thing up” – just make some moves from our few areas of excess (catcher, 2B, pitching) to better utilize our assets.

While I’m at it – a good faith gesture from Glass would be to demand that we sign Bonds – even if it makes no sense for the long term and even though we are no longer contending this season. (we were contending 8 games ago – 2 and a half games out is contending). At least it would send some sort of message to the fans and to the team that winning now is important too. Remember Moore talking in ST about players need to earn their spot now, this is no longer a place for “free rides”, etc. etc. Where’s the moves to back that bravado up?????

by loyal2sdad on May 27, 2008 1:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

This Entire Offense

Is underperforming. Why should we not expect our hitters to return to historical norms, just as hot hitters regress to mean?

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on May 27, 2008 12:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Fair enough

But this isn’t totally true. As I’ve argued at annoying length elsewhere, Guillen will, by his nature, go through extremely hot and extremely cold periods. As for Gordon, I think he’ll end up over an 800 OPS, but that’s not much better than now. DDJ is already doing his DDH thing pretty much. Grudz is doing his usual thing. We don’t know what Butler will do this year, given his youth. Even Teahen isn’t that far below his career OPS. Buck is around his usual, and Olivo is overperforming. TPJ isn’t actually underperforming all that much (scary as hell). So, yeah, the offense is cold, and they will get a bit better, but not that much better.

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

by devil_fingers on May 27, 2008 12:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

We should

But I’m not really convinced that will make our lineup that good. Teahen, DJ, Grudz, Buck and Gload are all below average hitters and yet they’re all in our lineup. Pena is an absolute hole, and there’s not much reason to think he’ll improve much based on his minor league numbers. We don’t really know what we have in Butler – this could be a season long funk as he adjusts to major league hitting. That leaves us really counting on Guillen and Gordon, and as good as they are, neither is an MVP type player.

The offensive will improve slightly from the awful state it is in now, but its still likely to be one of the worst, if not the worst offense in the league.

It's time for Moore to begin to address

this offense. He went out and hired a new manager to lead this crew, but it’s like he’s the general of a third world country’s army equipped with sticks and clubs up against tanks and helicopters. Hillman is getting tons of blame for our losing despite having nothing to work with. He’s trying different things (unlike his predesessor) which is refreshing to see. Moore needs to be looking for some trades right now. We have to find a lineup that we can live with. If we want to compete in the coming years, we should be looking for our lineup so that they can grow together and you can’t tell me it’s this one. TPJ has to go. Bring up Aviles because he deserves a chance. If he sucks out loud, we can address that in the offseason. It’s good to see you L2sD. I like your “no B.S.” attitude.

in regards to Hillman. I don’t see why he is getting blame. He’s been here two months and doesn’t have much to work with.

by I need more Esteban on May 27, 2008 1:34 PM EDT   0 recs

on Hillman

I’m not that down on him – just filling out the poll with a 4th option.

On the other hand, why are we all so quick to credit McClure with helping develop the pitching, but loathe to criticize Barnett for the lack of development with the hitters? More importantly, isn’t GMDM asking the same question? Don’t you think Hillman must be having doubts about Barnett as well?

Yes, he doesn’t have a whole lot to work with – but compared to last season, it’s basically the same team, except with the addition of Guillen, and with the exception of a core of young rookies who should seemingly improve. That’s just not happening – the team has regressed to last in the league in runs; they were 13th last year. The difference is LARGER than that – we are last by NEARLY HALF A RUN A GAME!

by loyal2sdad on May 27, 2008 1:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm not sure

But it’s interesting to me to think about how much coaching/managing helps in baseball? It seems like kind of an impossible thing to judge, but would be curious on peoples opinions. I’m generally of the mindset that it’s mostly up to the players and their abilities. I believe coaches can help tweak and make adjustments. But then, how does one explain a great pitching coach like Dave Duncan? Joe Torre was terrible with the Cardinals. Then goes to the Yankees and oversees a dynasty. Years later he is forced out due to no postseason appearances. I think it’s an interesting topic.

by I need more Esteban on May 27, 2008 2:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think the general belief

is that pitching coaches can make more of a difference than batting coaches. Don’t know how we as fans could know – but I stand by my “fire Barnett” stance anyway. There has to be accountablily. If it’s not Barnett, we’ll find out soon enough.

Look at it this way – you go to the doctor, and what does he do if he sees symptoms but can’t easily identify the disease? If he’s a good doctor, he calls for tests first, before treating the symptoms.

In this analogy, the symptoms are regressing offense by the Royals. The tests available would be to change the roster or improve the performance thru coaching. The doctor (Moore)apparently sees no need to change the roster; the specialist (Barnett) hasn’t found a way to improve the performance, sooooooooooo,
maybe it’s time for the patient to see a new specialist?

by loyal2sdad on May 27, 2008 2:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

For the record

I’m all for firing Barnett too, I don’t see how things could get worse.

by I need more Esteban on May 27, 2008 2:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I do blame Barnett

Joey Gathright, just as an example, had learned to draw walks in AAA and in the majors last year as he led the team in AVG and OBP. This year, it seems as though someone has told him (and the rest of the lineup) to “be aggressive” and take the same approach as TPJ or Gload. Ridiculous!

For the record, I’m a Gathright fan, so I don’t mean to pick on him. I’ve seen the entire team produce more 1- and 2-pitch outs than usual with a similar approach all year.

by Stat Ninja on May 28, 2008 4:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gathright's problem

is not hacktasticity. He’s consistently racked up decent pitch counts in his at bats—did you see last night? That was an extreme case even for him, but I don’t think many of us were surprised.

Sarcasmâ„¢. It's the new gravy.

Getting Thrown Out for the Cycle Rocks

by royalsreview on May 27, 2008 6:08 PM EDT   0 recs

i like your solutions for helping the team

I think starting Callaspo at SS is a pretty good stopgap solution. Of course, if we think there’s still a slim chance of winning the division, we should also sign Bonds.

Otherwise, let’s go with what you’ve suggested.

This space intentionally left blank.
