Colon v. Tomko 2008
I returned from exhile to make this one post and than I return to the abyss. So has anyone seen Bartolo Colons stats? 2-0 2.25 era and was even better in his second start going seven innings. Yes Colon is most certainly worse than Tomko who has a pretty 6.11 era and one question for Nyroyal . Have you put out an eta yet for mark teahens power? Anyway I dont think I am a negative fan for me it was very sad to see Butler, Teahen and Banny regress. I just think this team needs a change. Hopefully this team gets it together and turns it around after the all star break. Before I part I have one question now knowing just how powerful teahens bat would be who would take a flyier on Bonds for a 1 yr deal to get this anemic offense going again. Oo yes and I have not forgotten my bet with nyroyal about one pitcher winning 15 games this season. I am curious if he is still that confident about his chances of winning. Speak to you all in september. or after colon no hits the royals. Low blow I know but lets go royals and lets get a win streak started!!!

Billymvp, you said you were leaving for the season
Be a man of your word.

as a your not feeling confident?
Good Night and Good Luck all see you in september

For the record
I voted “5”. See ya Billy. Remember, this time do what you promised to do.
I probably disagree with you.

I dont want you to feel slighted
but you gotta vote again since I had to change it to a royals pitcher, not a pitcher. so make sure to get your votes in. Hasta la vista

Waiting To Exhile?
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

I can't argue with Moore too much
While I did advocate for Colon over Tomko (and if Colon keeps throwing mid 90s like he did his last start, that is gonna make Boston a virtual lock to win it all this season),
I also advocated for A Jones over Guillen. Boy, was I wrong on that one – Jones really looks washed up, while Guillen looks like he will reach his normal OPS, or somewhere in the vacinity.

I made the same assumptions

This past winter it was so obvious
That Bartolo Colon was going to win 15 games this year. Anyone could have seen that. When he was whipping 85 mph fastballs in winter leagues, Dayton should have swooped down and signed Bartolo to a multiyear deal. The fact that he did not is gross incompetence and grounds alone for him to be fired.

Why I advocated for him
Only because he was just a couple of years removed from being a 20 game winner. My belief was that Tomko “is who we thought he was”, while Colon could have been either a collosal flop, or a spectacular success. Granted, maybe the odds were only 5% that Colon would regain his old stuff like it appears he may have done, but that is EXACTLY the sort of gamble the Royals need to win to get an edge on the higher payroll teams.
Alas, one of the higher payroll teams now understands this principal, and they can afford five or ten times the number of gambles like this than a team like the Royals.
Sorta scary situation in Boston: ability to outspend all but one team, combined with a cutting edge front office unafraid to take sensible gambles, still aware of the value of a strong minor league system, and possessing a good idea of how to develop prospects in said system.
They could easily win something silly like 5 or 6 WS out of 7 or 8 years, IMHO.

Let's not go crazy, here,
do remember who Colon has started against. I’m pretty I could look like a league average starter against us and the Mariners right now.
And yes, yes, that Red Sox organization is a good one.

The point is
It was a gamble, no one really knew how he would perform. To come back in hindsight like BillyButlerforMVP is and suggesting that Colon was the obvious choice over Tomko is a bit silly I think.
You can make a good case that the Royals should have taken the gamble, but really it was throwing darts as to whether he’d be useful at all.

actually I said Colon was better
when he was still in rehab games… thanks for paying attention to detail. adios
by Billybutlerformvp on May 27, 2008 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's great that you said that
But there was really nothing to indicate that he’d be heads and tails better than Tomko. You were guessing, as were we all. And its not even definitive that Colon is better than Tomko. Let’s talk again in August or September and see where Bartolo is then.

So when is it that you're going to leave for the remainder of the season?
You keep promising it and you keep coming back. Be a man of your word.

Boy of his word
you mean? I’d be surprised if he was over the age of 18.

Whoa
Now that I’ve finished smirking like Alex Gordon does during hitting slumps, let me point out how ridiculous it is to annoint Colon as being anything other than a decent of the rotation option. His two starts were against a struggling Royals offense where he only went five innings, and last night’s outing against the godawful Mariners. For you fantasy players, that’s a huge “STAY AWAY” sign going forward. He’s a lock to regress when he’s forced to pitch against good offenses.

by NHZ on May 27, 2008 4:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Good point
Any pitching comparison must be made in mind that if we had signed them, that pitcher wouldn’t have the benefit of having his numbers inflated by playing against the Royals.

i do wonder why his fatass didnt get in shape a little bit earlier...
had he been throwing 95 in winter ball, he surely wouldve gotten at least the $3 million that Tomko got rather than the league minimum

Selfish
Think about it he had surgery on his shoulder. Poison. Can you imagine the disaster of his fat, selfish butt in the same locker room with Jose Guillen?

And had our own “The Biggest Loser” TV show.

It was probably some of the latter,
but yes, the guy really screwed up his shoulder last year.

He's not in shape and really shows no interest in ever getting in shape
Teams will still sign him, regardless of how bad of shape he’s in. How long do you think it will be before he goes back on the DL? A month? Less?
I probably disagree with you.

to regress.
Next start.

I'm sure
Tomko would cut his ERA in half if he could face our offense every other game.
sign Greinke a Evan Longoria type deal now.

Greinke already has 5 wins,
and in two other games was the victim of a blown save. Don’t expect that pace (blown save pace, that is) to keep up – our bullpen is too solid for that to happen.
Throw in another game he lost 2-1, and I think, given normal health, he should be a good bet to win 15 plus. Hell, he’s on pace for 15 right now, despite the above.
by loyal2sdad on May 28, 2008 6:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Colon would not be a good bet over a full season
there’s a reason why he got so little, watch it. Colon’s season ERA will be worse than Tomko’s, barring injury.
by playingwithfire on May 29, 2008 3:57 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
A few starts from now, no one will be bringing up Colon
A few weeks after that, he’ll be back on the DL.
I probably disagree with you.
