Game 53 Open Thread - Twins (26-25) at Royals (21-31)

Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals, May 28, 2008 8:10 PM EDT

Zack Greinke (5-2, 2.82 ERA) is pretty much the only reason to watch the Royals at this point, at least in the early innings. Luckily, he's starting tonight.

The Twins counter with Livan Hernandez (6-2, 4.22 ERA) (please read his name aloud in your best Jon Miller I'm-putting-extra-gusto-in-any-hispanic-name voice) who looks to completely dominate the Royals for a third time this season. To date, Livan has allowed just four hits and a walk in fourteen innings against the Royals.

Tonight's game shall be the most glorious experience of our lives. The excitement builds!

For the record, Livan Hernandez has been pretty good this season

7 quality starts. One of the two starts he made against the Royals was a quality start. The other was not. In case we are interested in accuracy in addition to overreaction and hyperbole, Hernandez did not “completely dominate” the Royals in his second start against them. 7 ip, 4 er isn’t exactly domination. But hey, we’re in a losing streak so everything sucks all the time, always has and always will.

I probably disagree with you.

What are you talking about

When we got 4 runs off of him, we did so with 3 hits. Would any definition of the word “dominate” make that a “completely dominating” performance? Perhaps something in olde English that I’m not aware of.

Things are bad. We don’t need to mischaracterize things to make them sound worse than they already are.

I probably disagree with you.

Q: What is the difference between playing baseball in the U.S. and Mexico?

Gonzalez: Baseball is usually (??) the same. The one thing that is different is the physical and mental preparation and training(?) here in the U.S. All of the stadiums have good gyms and statistics(?) for you to prepare and it’s 100% part of the game. IN Mexico, the teams only practice drills and batting practice before the game.

This is one of those areas where I somewhat diverge from normal statistical analysis and believe more in scouting. Yeah, home runs are home runs, and that’s fine. But the one thing no box score is going to tell you is whether someone’s legitimately snake-bitten.

One of the reasons I’m so sick of the Teahen-bashing is that one game, Teahen went 0-4 and everyone crawled all over his shit. The thing is, two of the four outs were blistered line drives right at people, a third was a shot into the gap that got run down, and the fourth was a warning-track fly ball—INTO the wind.

Unfortunately, there’s simply no stat for “balls hit the snot out of”.

Gathright's making me look like an idiot

Not that that is such a hard task. Good for him.

It's odd

Because Gathright seems so overmatched much of the time at the plate. Guess you just enjoy a night like this for him and chalk it up to randomness.

No

Some asshat who shall remain nameless (mostly because I don’t know who it Barnett is for sure) got him swinging early in the count early in the season.

Lately, he’s been working the count, and lo and behold he’s hitting with some authority rather than weak-ass nubbers.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

Yeah, he did

but it was a massive deviation from the norm… Not that it was totally meaningless, but…

Ok, so I'm not crazy...

well, that can’t be USED to prove I’m crazy.

It was certainly painted at the time that he was showing improvement in OBP, and that it was due to a chance in approach, rather than a fluke/weaker AAA pitching.

Nice to see him getting into it now, though…just heard he has a five game hitting streak going.

by RoyalsFanInBillings on May 28, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm a bit negative

I don’t know, maybe he is showing improvement. Little more more work on defense, a little more power, and he’ll be a poor man’s Juan Pierre!

One might also point out

In the midst of an extended streak of poor performance, it is far from silly, irrational, or evidence of psychosis to have feelings (verbalized online) that your team might continue on any given evening to display poor performance. Or even lose a 5 run lead in the ninth.

The Royals have turned losing into an art form.

I mean, seriously. We do everything right, turn over a 5 run lead to our impressive bullpen, arguably the best part of our team, and they blow it. I mean, how is that NOT artful losing? And you know that Posnanski is banging his head against the desk right now, having flashbacks to the 19-gamer and muttering “They’re not gonna get me this time, not this time . . . . “

I think we just had the answer to the Royal's choke

The psychological pressure of knowing that they didn’t have Soria, but the Twins had Nathan, is now affecting the Royals pitchers. George Brett is spinning in his grave.

My friends ask me if it's embarrassing to have a no hitter thrown against the Royals

A 10 game losing streak like this one is far worse than a no – hitter.

Here’s the thing for me – KC pulls this kind of stuff every year. Change manager, pitchers, hitters, coaches and it’s the same. Have the starter pitch well – bullpen screws it up, have the hitters score runs – starters are awful, good pitching – poor hitting. KC’s normal routine of making average to below average starters look like Cy Young – insert the most recent name here. Continue to play terrible ML players – looks like TPJ is this year’s Jason LaRue whipping boy although Teahen is closing ground. Butler hasn’t improved. Buck and DDJ are just good enough to get you beat.

The culture of losing is alive and well. They’ll say all the right things, gritty and brave as ever, but it won’t change. I am more disappointed with this losing streak than I can remember. Perhaps the fast start gave me false hope. I’ll have my annual retreat into the minor leagues and hope that we can contend two – three years down the road. The ghost of Chip Ambres continues to haunt the organization. Somewhere Allard Baird is smiling . . .
