OT: The Rangers' 1B woes
In lieu of something positive to write about the Royals, perhaps something negative about another team might be distracting. I suppose that isn't the most noble way of thinking, but what are you going to do on a Satuday in the middle of a losing streak?

This morning, reading a draft preview that mentioned Adrian Gonzalez from the 2000 draft, it simply struck me that, off the top of my head, there was a time when the Rangers had Gonzalez, Travis Hafner, and Mark Teixeira in their system. This season, they've been throwing a Gload-esque [(tm) NYRoyal] pu-pu platter of Ben Broussard (now departed)/Chris Shelton out there in the hope that one of them might recall a bit of past potential (at least the Rangers didn't give them a two-year contract, I guess) until their next stud (or so I hear) Chris Davis is ready for the majors.
I can see trading away some of the "excess" talent earlier if you thought they could fill another need. But did any Rangers fan imagine that all three would be gone, starring elsewhere? [OK, in Hafner's case, not so much now, but for a couple years he looked like the white David Ortiz..] I wonder if Rangers fan ever think about how, in 2006, they could have had Teixeira in RF, Hafner at DH, and Gonzalez and 1B.
At least they got good stuff in return, right? Obviously for Teixeira, there's some potential (Saltalamacchia and Andrus, anyone else?). For Hafner -- Ryan Drese and the corpse of Einer Diaz. For Gonzalez -- Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka. At least in the last case they didn't have to throw in a young pitcher. Oh, yeah.
I imagine a lot Royals fans are thinking, "Geez, at least they got to have Teixeria on the big team for a few years. We'd kill to have to make choices llike that." Yeah, that was nice, but they couldn't manage to keep any of those guys? They lost all three? That's gotta hurt.
I guess the level of pain depends on who you are. What do you think, RRers? Any Ranger fans out there who want to enlighten us? Is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?

having alligence to both;
i feel much more pain from the royals. trust me.. the rangers have had much more young talent in their systems over the years, which was nice for a while. I mean they had pudge when he was really young that was awsome.
so in my opinion its better to have loved and lost.. personally.

Help is on the way...
We have two AAA first basemen who are hitting in the 220’s in Omaha (Shealy and Stodolka).

Won't need him there though...
Gload is sporting a 570 OPS with plus plus defense and is locked up for the next couple of years so we’re set at first.

The rangers sent Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young in that deal to get otsuka
Yasuhiko Yabuta is to Major League Baseball as Drew Carey is to The Price is Right

Yeah, I know
that makes it even worse, in my opinion. I don’t follow the NL, is Eaton even alive any more? Or did he get hit on the head by Joel’s “rope”?

We have Josh Hamilton
Does anything more need to be said…really?
by SaltyGoesYard on May 31, 2008 2:44 PM EDT 0 recs
There's no doubt that Hamilton's been a real shot in the arm for the Rangers.
(ahem)
Sorry. I meant, what a great story! So inspiring!
Anyway, imagine the current lineup with Gonzalez and Teixeira in it instead of Shelton/Broussard/Botts and Boggs.

Josh
Hamilton is pretty cool. Would you take him for Miguel Olivo?

Anyway... as long as Costa is off the table
Your phrasing is confusing. Are you asking SaltyGoesYard if he’d take Olivo for Hamilton?
The phrasing makes it sound like you’re asking me if I’d take him for Olivo. Well, it would be heartbreaking, but if the Rangers threw in Kinsler as a sweetener, I’d almost have to consider it.

you’re right, that was terrible phrasing on my part. I mean to ask SaltyGoesYard if he’d take Olivo for Hamilton.

Costa, I mean
They can have Bob Costas. I mean, he’s no Ross Gload with the stick, but he’s probably pretty close.

It's so easy to find a good hitting 1B. I wonder why haven't the Rangers been able to find one?
I probably disagree with you.
by NYRoyal on May 31, 2008 7:35 PM EDT 0 recs
Yeah, I've always wondered about the "easy" part, too
I assume you’re being a bit sarcastic, here. I mean, I know I’m as guilty as the next fan in thinking this (and much more intelligent writers than me seem to do this, too), then I look around, see who’s playing first for a lot of teams, and wonder where all the over .800 OPS 1Bs are.
But the thing about Texas is that, not so long ago, they had three excellent 1B/Dh types in their organization, and now they’re all gone. That’s just weird, at least looked at as a whole (each transaction has its own particular context, of course.

Assuming I'm being sarcastic
It’s usually a good bet. You’d think that the excellent power environment of The Ballpark at Arlington would turn some mediocre 1B/DH’s into guys that at least look good half the time, but so far that hasn’t worked out for their 1B/DH’s, at least not since Teixeira.
I probably disagree with you.

Where'd all the 800/900 OPS guys go?
By way of Balco out the doh. Have you seen Carlos Delgado? Dude looks like Ross Gload.
Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

there are 15 firstbasemen with OPS over .800
If you don’t look at qualified leaders, there are 28 of them. (With all but 2 having at least 70 at bats.) Amazingly that’s not including guys like Ryan Howard, Teixiera, Loney, and Carlos Pena—all who just missed the cut.
So, yeah, it’s not easy. On an average basis, only about 1 out of every 1 team has one. (or 1 out of every 2 if you don’t like sample sizes under 174 at bats.)

also
Texas technically does have one, if you include Catalanotto, who is OPSing at .827. Saltamacchia is nearly there at .778. Both are play other positions, although over the last 10 games or so, Frank’s been inexplicably splitting time with Chris Shelton. Although, Shelton does have a career .815 OPS in a tougher ballpark.
Our own Ross Gload is still hovering at .570, which ironically puts him immediately below Doug Mientkiewicz (.609) and Justin Huber (.617).

...and then probably won't manage a .800 OPS
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

What happened to playing him at
third?
And Blalock might very well OPS 800 if he’s actually healthy.

But you saw the news about him moving to 1B, right?
I guess they figure they’re set at third with young, promising talent like Ramon Vasquez at third.

like Blalock to 1B and Teahen to 1B.
