Where's The Game Thread?
Consider this the game thread- RR
It's 0900 out here and, like Frasier Crane, I'm listening. We got Gil today, while Cleveland counters with the Laffey Curve; can our boys survive yet another encounter with the dreaded Lefty Soft-Tosser? Can Gil throw strikes and keep it in the park.? Is this the new standard lineup (and why is Buck catching at this early hour after a night game?)? Is Olivo happy? Stay tuned to find out this and more.

Mine's not even fully developed yet
Royals, NBA, Golden Hurricane, Hawkeyes, Chiefs, and KU basketball, in that order.
I am very happy with this team being around .500
Like most of us, I expected that this team would end the season a little under .500. So far, they are doing it and they aren’t even clicking on all cylinders yet.
I probably disagree with you.
I agree. I think it’s actually very encouraging that the team is near .500 in spite of the losing streak.
Of course, if the offense doesn't improve, the team is toast
But there is no way they are going to continue scoring 3.X runs per game.
I probably disagree with you.

Is there a particular reason why Hillman
is having Buck catch a day game after a night game?
That is a little odd
Olivo is the better defensive catcher. Hard to say why he’d have Olivo DH and Buck catch. I would assume it has something to do with Meche preferring and/or feeling more comfortable with Buck catching him.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on May 4, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Career .617 OPS against righties pretty much says it all for me. Buck: .684. Not great either, but enough better than Olivo to get the nod.
Exactly right. And there's one other thing
Buck is younger, and perhaps still developing. He needs playing time to continue to improve and reach whatever potential he has.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on May 4, 2008 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Fair enough.
I was just wondering since NYRoyal has stated several times that Olivo is the better defensive catcher and Olivo appears to be swinging a better bat .255/.283/.569 4 HR in 51 AB vs Buck .247/.344/.377, 2 HR in 77 ABs (I realize this is a small sample size).. I am not saying I want Olivo to take over the starting role. It just seems weird that we put up with the Buck/LaRue platoon last year (112-65 games caught), followed by signing a better backup catcher which then leads to more Buck starts… I realize Bell vs Hillman makes a major difference but 24-6 games caught for Buck-Olivo just seems a little high to me is all..
But Olivo has had a lot of games played
Buck can handle the load, paticularly before we get into the hot months. And Olivo should be playing as much as possible against LHP, and he is. But I wouldn’t sit Buck just because Olivo has had a good month.
I probably disagree with you.
by Scott McKinney on May 4, 2008 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't know believe...
that Olivo is the better defensive catcher.
Olivo
is substantially better than Buck at throwing out baserunners, but beyond that, I’m not sure what makes him such a better defensive catcher than Buck. Buck is much better at preventing passed balls than Olivo and seems to handle the Royals’ pitching staff very well.
The DT system at Baseball Prospectus clearly values Olivo’s defense more highly than Buck’s.
But my personal observation, judging from the few games I’ve seen, is that Olivo boxes the ball around way more often than Buck does. Discourage the running game here, give up a base on a wild pitch or passed ball there—seems like a wash to me.
Royals officially in third place
Twins beat the Tigers (thanks to Kenny Rogers, Zach Miner and the Tigers defense) so now it is
Twins 16-14
Chisox 14-15 1.5
Royals 14-16 2
Indians 14-17 2.5
Tigers 14-18 3
Kind of upside down.
I probably disagree with you.
Those expecting the Tigers to pull away are going to be disappointed
They may well win the division. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit. But I really think their pitching is going to slow them down and keep the Central a close race all season. Neither their rotation nor their bullpen is particularly good. Lots of holes and mediocrity.
I probably disagree with you.
