Royals Confidence Index

It’s time again for the Royals Confidence Index (RCI)*.  The Royals have had an interesting 14-16 start with lots of ups and downs.  We’ve laughed, we’ve cried and I think we’ve all learned a lot about ourselves.  Or something.  Last month’s RCI crept up to 6.99.  Will a 14-16 start change that?  Remember that the RCI is not simply how you feel about the last 30 games.  It is about how you feel right now about the 2008 team.

Here's the deal.  For each of these questions, give me a number from 1-10.  1 means you feel very bad/unhappy/negative about the item in question right now.  10 means you feel extremely good/happy/positive about it.  (If you want to use decimals like 6.5, feel free).

1. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals team overall?

2. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals pitching?

3. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals hitting?

4. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals defense?

5. How do you feel about Dayton Moore?

6. How do you feel about Trey Hillman?

7. How do you feel about the Royals minor league system?

8. How do you feel about the Royals future?

Bonus questions (these have no bearing on the RCI):

A. In June, if all of the below are healthy, which pitchers would you like to see in the 4 and 5 spots in the Royals rotation?  (pick 2)

Hochevar

Tomko

Bale

Davies

Nunez

Soria

Other (please specify)

B. List the Royals players who you think will be traded this year.  (list as many as you like)

(Possibilities include but are not limited to Grudz, German, Olivo, Gathright, DeJesus, Teahen, Gobble, Mahay, Bale, Peralta, Nunez, etc.)

C. If you go to Kauffman Stadium and you can only eat one thing there (god forbid) what would it be?

* The RCI is not a competition.  It is only an exhibition.  Please, no wagering.

3.5 for our manager?

Fire Trey Hillman! Heads will roll! Out with Trey!

(J/K)

by Royals Nation on May 5, 2008 12:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I certainly wouldn't fire him

He’s handling the pitching staff fairly well and I’m sure he’s a good “leader of men.” But he’s let some pitchers run up unnecessarily high pitch counts. And the big thing is his “diversifcation of the offense.” His incessant steal attempts, hit-and-runs and sacrifices are robbing this team of outs, baserunners and runs. A manager doesn’t mean more than about 3-5 wins per season. But I think Trey is subtracting right now more than he’s adding.

I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on May 5, 2008 12:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

FWIW

And you probably have already seen this on your own, but Mister PAP himself isn’t concerned thus far.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on May 5, 2008 4:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, I saw that

And I’m not much concerned by that. I agree with Rany that if this is as bad as it gets, pitcher use/abuse-wise, then it’s no big deal. Quite frankly the pitch counts are a small part of my critique of Hillman. The larger issue is the frequency with which he’s giving up outs and baserunners.

I probably disagree with you.

I'm not sure how similar these are to April's answers

1. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals team overall?
7 (I’m leaning between a 6 and a 7….our hitting diminishes the score significantly)

2. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals pitching?
8 (Tremendous upside with Greinke [still], Bannister appears to be defying odds, Hochevar looks like #3 at very least, Meche will get better….front end of bullpen diminishes the score somewhat)

3. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals hitting?
3 (Moore’s glaring weakness….needs to be revamped significantly….Butler and Teahen look like singles hitters)

4. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals defense?
8 (No complaints other than Guillen’s botchedness and Teahen’s zany adventures in left [which I hope have reached the end, thanks to Guillen])

5. How do you feel about Dayton Moore?
7 (I’d give him a B or B- thus far in his tenure)

6. How do you feel about Trey Hillman?
5 (Growing pains, but I believe he could get better)

7. How do you feel about the Royals minor league system?
6 (Plethora of arms, no bats)

8. How do you feel about the Royals future?
7 (A .500 team is a probability….a contending team is only a possibility)

A. In June, if all of the below are healthy, which pitchers would you like to see in the 4 and 5 spots in the Royals rotation? (pick 2)

Hochevar
Davies
(Tomko in pen if Bale is nothealthy/Tomko DFA is Bale is healthy, Bale in ‘pen if healthy, Yabuta in Minors, Musser promoted)

B. List the Royals players who you think will be traded this year. (list as many as you like) (Possibilities include but are not limited to Grudz, German, Olivo, Gathright, DeJesus, Teahen, Gobble, Mahay, Bale, Peralta, Nunez, etc.)
Actually….none. I truly believe that none of our players will be traded (at least no significant players). German’s trade value will decrease to almost zilch, and Grudz will be shopped, but his proneness to injury and our organization’s relentless will to hold onto veterans will force us to keep him. I suppose Peralta might be traded, but certainly none of these other players mentioned.

C. If you go to Kauffman Stadium and you can only eat one thing there (god forbid) what would it be?

by NYRoyal on May 5, 2008 12:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I honestly have no clue what this team is planning on doing, but for B I’d say the only real possibility is Grudz if someone will take him, German if not, and perhaps Peralta.

C. This is a hard question. Only one thing! I can’t say no to cheese fries though.

by mazoboom on May 5, 2008 1:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree on cheese fries

I love fries, I love cheese and I love chili, but I don’t think the three go together. It kind of sogs-out the fries and you lose the good fried potato flavor. I do love a good chili cheese coney from Sonic, though. I hate that there are no Sonics within hundreds of miles of NYC.

I probably disagree with you.

Defense – 5
Hitting – 4

And yet overall the team gets a ‘4’? Do you think our lack of baserunning/speed/managerial skill, etc. really would have that much of an impact?

1. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals team overall? 5
2009 is their year, that’s what I’m waiting for.

2. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals pitching? 8
Meche is/going to come around. Bannister and Greinke are looking excellent as is the back end of the bullpen. Hochevar is looking good as well. Middle relief and a fifth starter would improve my confidence.

3. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals hitting? 1
Through the first 30 games: last in AL HR (16), next to last AL BB (79), next to last AL OBP (.311), last in SLG (.356), last in AL OPS+ (82)..... the list keeps going.

4. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals defense? 7.5
Hillman was dead on when he said it would take pitching and defense for this team to win. But I don’t think he thought the offense would be THIS bad.

5. How do you feel about Dayton Moore? 6
This draft and what he does at the trade deadline are going to be huge as it relates to the next three seasons. I’ll be interested to see if Moore goes college heavy early in the draft.

6. How do you feel about Trey Hillman? 3.5
Game management is not his strength. The clubhouse seems, from the outside, to be healthy (no one has shot any reporters). 30 games still doesn’t give me a good read on him though, so my rating for him stays the same.

7. How do you feel about the Royals minor league system? 5
See: Dayton Moore confidence rating.

8. How do you feel about the Royals future? 6.5
I’d feel better if Gordon and Butler were hitting with more power. The pitching staffs seems to be coming together nicely though.

Bonus questions (these have no bearing on the RCI):

A. In June, if all of the below are healthy, which pitchers would you like to see in the 4 and 5 spots in the Royals rotation? (pick 2)

Hochevar and Bale

B. List the Royals players who you think will be traded this year. (list as many as you like)
This is difficult because there are a lot of people who COULD be traded, but not necessarily traded. So I will list the ones who I would be willing to trade with the most likely in CAPS: MAYHAY, Gobble, Tomko, German, GRUDZIELANEK, Teahen, DEJESUS, OLIVO and Shealy.

C. If you go to Kauffman Stadium and you can only eat one thing there (god forbid) what would it be? Can’t go wrong with the hot dog, but it should be noted that I cannot afford the fancy food, so I may be missing out.

Blown Save

by BlownSave on May 6, 2008 1:32 AM EDT   0 recs

Hill man seems to be polarizing

seems like we only have high scores or pretty dang low ones.

My opinion of his is not the best. I think he is an over analyzer who micromanages. He is complaining about the team not having a better OBP on kcroyals.com today. I laughed when i read that. He says they don’t have it up because it’s a process. As a former player, its not a process. Its the ball hitting the bat. Its about talented players

He steals too much, his “we gotta be agressive we gotta get on base and steal cuz we can’t hit the ball, and we especially can’t hit for power” has to be rubbing off on the players. If you get told things like that daily, you just might start believing the rubish.

by tcon125 on May 6, 2008 12:22 PM EDT   0 recs

OBP
He says they don’t have it [OBP] up because it’s a process. As a former player, its not a process. Its the ball hitting the bat. Its about talented players

What is a process is changing hitters mindset and approach so that they have more plate discipline and take more pitches. And the Royals have some talented hitters who just aren’t hitting right now.

I probably disagree with you.

my answers

1. 5
2. 8
3. 1.5 (after last night’s hack-fest against a mediocre pitcher, this number’s charitable)
4. 5 (Buck & Pena bring the defense number up, but bring the offense number down)
5. 8
6. 7
7. 4 (the lack of help available for our anemic offense is disappointing)
8. 8

A. Hochevar & Soria
B. Grudz, German, Peralta & Bale (if anyone will take him)
C. Polish sausage w/ kraut

Sarcasm . . . keeping Royals fans sane since 1986.

My turn...

Hochevar
Davies

If it means that Davies has figured something out/turned a corner, then I’d love to see him in the rotation. I’m happy with Soria in the bullpen for a few more months, but I’d love to see him get a chance to start in Aug/Sept.

B. List the Royals players who you think will be traded this year. (list as many as you like)
Grudz, DeJesus, Gobble

C. If you go to Kauffman Stadium and you can only eat one thing there (god forbid) what would it be?

Now answers to the RCI questions?

I probably disagree with you.

Ok, if anyone else wants to give their votes, do so ASAP

I’m putting up the RCI sometime during the day on Thursday

I probably disagree with you.
