Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Game 34 Open Thread - Orioles (16-18) at Royals (15-18)

Baltimore Orioles at Kansas City Royals, May 8, 2008 8:10 PM EDT

Yesterday we pondered -- the royal we, man,  the editorial -- the likelihood that the Royals could crawl back to .500 this season, an event which, depending on how you looked at the details, seemed about a 10-15% possibility. In case you missed it, a loyal reader delved into the math a little bit more and found that the probably sweet spot for the Royals was something like a 17-13 burst. This is more likely than, say, a straight four game winning streak, or, conversely, going four games over .500 over a much long period (which was my initial guess).

Well thanks to Zack Greinke and an offensive explosion last night against the Angels, that glittering dream is now that much closer to reality, with the Royals ready to jump all over a Baltimore team that still owes us big for stealing away Paul Bako.

Your pitching matchup:

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Luke Hochevar 2-1 4.86 1.67 14 9

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Daniel Cabrera 2-1 4.06 1.36 27 23

And don't forget to share your thoughts on tonight's episode of The Office of course.

Orioles series is really big for KC right now

The Orioles are the type of team that KC needs to sweep or win the series. KC is at home and the O’s have lost 5 in a row. KC had two good wins vs. the Indians. They played pretty well vs. Angels with Tomko’s performance and a breakout last night.

Royals have momentum with Hochevar on the mound. He pitched a great game vs. Indians. Cabrera has 23/27 ratio BB/Ks. Let’s go Royals.

Luke is really going to have to do better than a walk for every K

walking guys with 2 outs is bad. His groundball tendencies will save him a lot there, but it’s just not a good way to pitch

You don't understand.

My ex-wife grew up in a Baltimore suburb.

I live 75 miles from Baltimore, in a completely different state, and they have the gall to argue that I’m in their territory.

Lastly, I took said ex-wife to the following doubleheader at the K in 1991, and she Orioled me to death for MONTHS:

I think the good he's done with the pitching staff outweighs the bad on the offense

But I’m definitely questioning his judgment to a certain degree. There have really been no offensive bright spots to this point – which is hard to believe 40 games in. I guess Dejesus has been good in the handful of games he’s played, and Olivo has been a bit better than expected. Other than that, all of GMDM’s players have flopped thus far – and while I realize his plan is stockpile pitching then deal it for sticks, I wonder if he’s going to be able to get us GOOD bats.

Low to mid nineties nineties fastball and a slider, OCCASIONALLY. And we can not hit him. It’s not like he’s just painting the corners either, we are consistently late on the pitch or rolling it over to the infielders. I’m all for giving the opposing pitcher credit, but this is pathetic.
